Sourcing a quality silver Litz cable for DIY upgrade project.

Featured Replies

I’m looking for some genuine silver Litz cable to replace the stuff in my B&W desktop phones.

It needs to be 4-core (obviously) and 2 to 2.5m long.

Any recommendations for a source?

I already have plugs (Furutech).

Cheers,

Steve

If it's 4-core ... I'm curious to know how you define 'Litz' cable.

Well, let's see if the fellow who piled into me a few months ago, when I dared to describe my solid-core spkr cables as 'Litz' ... comments on your description.

And perhaps you could enlighten me as to, if "L+, L-, R+, R-" defines a 'Litz' headphone cable ... how on earth do you have a "non-Litz" headphone cable?

The way I read what he wants is 4 cores of litz wire. Each core being litz wire... feel free to pile on any time though.. LOL

From memory, your "solid core" speaker wire is cat cable or something similar? If you're using multiple strands of individually insulated solid core conductors, for each of the L&R Pos & Neg, then it's closer to litz wire than solid core, when you're describing the cables. Maybe more like chunky litz :)

Aah, OK. Yes, that makes sense. 👍

4 cores is needed, obvs.

But I would suggest each core doesn't necessarily need to be (individually insulated) 'Litz' wire. It could just as well be solid-core silver wire. (It just shouldn't be stranded.)

"Chunky litz" is a great description of my spkr cables. 👍

A few months ago, I described them as "Litz" - but someone laid into me for calling them that! He proclaimed that "Litz" wire is twisted in a certain configuration, as well as being individually insulated. So - as my spkr cables are not twisted in this way - I was wrong to call them "Litz". 🤔

For something like headphones, it needs to be very flexible (unless you've broken your neck and have one of those braces on). Solid core and flexible don't exactly go together.

Good point.

Thanks for the comments lads.

To be honest, a 4 core fine multi-strand cable in silver would probably be fine. Doesn’t need to be Litz and in thinking about the flexibility of the cable required, a multi-strand 4 core would be preferred.

I’m using a Canare microphone cable currently but wanted something more “resolving” than copper.

Having said that, I found an eBay seller offering 0.4mm 100% silver, PTFE insulated plaited bulk cable which may do the job. They claim it’s ideal for headphones.

Have a look at www.lavricables.com.....they stock silver litz wire for headphones in their DIY Supplies section. 3 different types of wire available.

Cheers

Please use the wire that Mick has linked to, Steve ... and tell us whether the silver wire does deliver a more 'resolving' cable.

My thinking is that 'litz' cable (individually insulated strands) will be more resolving ... but you wouldn't notice the difference between silver litz and copper litz. Your current Canare microphone cable is merely stranded - not 'litz'.

Lavricables are a European Company (Probably UK with mention of VAT) ...been in operation since 2012.....3 levels of 4 core braided silver headphone cable (28 awg)are available......$88 for 2.5metres ....Registered Mail to Australia takes 3 to 5 weeks. No idea which part of Europe...Transylvania ? Gladiator Cables popped up during my searching......put that mob on you "do not touch with a forty foot pole" list.

Cheers

Mick

PS: Lavricable apart from DIY cable have a huge range of "finished" headphone cables with every connector known to man. Also no VAT is applied to your order.

Having been a hearing aid senior technician in 2002, If you happen to have a hearing aid business that has its own workshop to do repairs , then you may find Litz wire too. It is a feature of Bosch hearing aids to use Litz wire.
