Free eBook: how to take and interpret measurements with REW

Featured Replies

Hello all, I have completed two eBooks which I have released for free. Both are available for download from my Google Drive: LINK

IMO, anybody who is serious about this hobby should own a measurement microphone and know how to understand and interpret basic room measurements. I do not think that objective measurements are a substitute for listening. Rather, it is a tool that we can use to improve our listening skills. It can also be used to tune our systems with far greater precision and repeatability than is possible with hearing alone. The problem is that many do not understand the measurements, let alone how to take them. I hope that these eBooks will lower that barrier.

The first book, "REW Basics" is an extremely condensed version of the second book with an expanded focus for new users. It tells you how to take a room measurement and interpret the most important graph: the frequency response.

The second book, "REW Advanced" is a more thorough guide with room and loudspeaker measurements, and a deeper dive into other REW measurements. Even though I named it "Advanced", this is far from an advanced guide to REW. It is only more advanced than the "basic" guide.

Hi Keith,

Although you've written in the introduction to the REW Advanced book ... "And lastly, if you want to thank me for my work - there is no need." ... as we know well 'want' and 'need' are two very different things. I want to say thank you. The time you've taken is considerable albeit perhaps less than the sum of your time to respond helping others with the same questions over and over again.

The link to your Google Drive takes me to the REW Advanced document and I can't seem to navigate from there to REW Basics ... am I missing something? ('Oh dear' I hear you say - if he can't do that maybe he should not be thinking about REW !! 😅)

You're welcome Mark, glad you found it helpful. I made a mistake posting that link, it should work now!

Thanks Keith, the link now points to the folder with both documents 👍

Downloaded, thanks! I'm ok with doing standard things with REW, and have lots of experience with DSP in other realms, but your ebooks are exactly what I need to help me fill some gaps.

Downloaded, thanks @Keith_W, will have a read after pouring some cement,,,,

Thanks for providing the eBooks Keith.

Should make some interesting reading and at least hopefully I will be able to understand the frequency response graphs I sometimes see in reviews.

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.

I've been using DEQX up until now and have wondered about going the REW route as an alternative.

Cheers

REW is not an alternative to DEQX. DEQX is mostly linear-phase FIR, whereas REW is optimized to making minimum-phase IIR filters. You can use it to make linear-phase filters with the help of rePhase, but it is extremely tedious and repetitive work that will drive you insane. At least it drove me insane when I tried it. You are better off paying money and getting yourself a linear-phase filter designer. But you don't have to - you get one with your DEQX already.

These books are not about DSP, it's about how to read measurements and what they mean.
