Headphone equalization

Featured Replies

I have been reading a number of headphone reviews and quite a few have mentioned that equalization is needed for headphones to get the best out of them. Pardon my ignorance but can someone enlighten me on this matter?

Thank you

Basically it's boosting or attenuating various frequencies to compensate for a given headphone's output, or just to adjust the output to suit your own preferences, such as boosting lower bass. The supposed ideal is not a flat frequency response, see the link about the Harmon Curve:

I recently purchased a RME ADI-2 Dac fs.  The RME has a 5 band EQ (plus high/low shelves)   I have tested 4 different sets of headphones from $400 to $2000 using the EQ's from 'Oratory 1990 EQ List'.   The RME has 24db of Headroom so EQ is not a problem.  It all depends on what the Headphones can handle.

Type it into Google and you will find it in a Reddit sub forum.

The EQ's make a huge difference

1 set of HP's I tried needs a 10db boost at 10,000.     RME sorted it, and the HP's could handle the boost.   The good thing about the RME is that you can flick between EQ on/off in an instant, to hear the difference.

If you listen to your headphones via a laptop or pc into a HP Amp/Dac there are some highly recommended Windows software.

Happy listening.

The above link should answer your question. EQ is just a way to change the flavour of you headphones more to your taste. I myself never eq, if a headphone is not to my liking I either don’t buy it or resell it and buy one that is to my taste. No one headphone will sound good on all systems on all genres of music but sennheiser 6 series is one of the better all rounders.
