Coffee plunger recommendations

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Yes I'm sure a coffee machine is the way to go, yes I'm sure I am drinking coffee that is terrible, but a plunger is my only option. Does anyone use one? I know this will require a confession of sorts. Which is best in your experience?

The one I have is no good. No pressure when I 'plunge' (highly technical term). I'm using good coffee, I'd like good results as far as plungers go.

Cheers.

perhaps a practical alternative is a Toddy creating simple cold press - the liquor lasts 2 weeks in the fridge and can be heated or had cold.

many aficionados use this as a quick excellent coffee but smoother than espresso machines due to the temp and time of brew.

makes my iced coffee every morning.

I have been using a Avanti brand plunger with no problems for two years now, good quality Pyrex glass and the chromed metalwork shows no sign of rusting.

A good coffee in the morning starts the day well and the plunger is simple and effective to use.

Have found its best to let the grounds settle and then "do the plunge".

Thanks for the responses, I have no idea what a toddy is but I'll look into it. Thanks NT3 I'll check out avanti.

Welcome, enjoy your coffee.

+1 on the Avanti.

Looks good, durable, does the job perfectly, doesn't costa motza either

Also excellent when travelling. It can go where all other coffee makers fear to tread :)

Have a look at the Aeropress - it's a c;ever little beastie, puches well above it's weight, tastes better than machines costing 1000's

.............but does it come with boxing gloves?

think mine cost $50 at a local roaster

I bought this very plunger last week. Best one I've had yet. The valve at the top is great.

I prefer Aeropress coffee to plunger (and Pompei lever to **everything** else--but cost may be an issue here!)

I use a stainless steel plunger.

NT3 hit the nail on the head with:  Have found its best to let the grounds settle and then "do the plunge".   - It makes a huge difference.

My normal technique is :

after filling, plunge it in about 1cm

leave for a while to let it settle

gently pull the plunger up a fraction and then plunge down.

Thanks to all for the responses, really appreciated. I will google 'Pompeii' lever Greg, another first for me. Cheers also Jake for the recommendation. Appreciate the tips on methodology- I use the method as described by Padres http://padrecoffee.com.au/downloads/PLUNGER.pdf which I have found useful. I typically get my coffee there too, but I got a cheap plunger from elsewhere hence the thread.

Appreciate the advice all.
