The use of Emojis as Post Reactions

On a side note, I would like to see a thumbs down or sideways (neutral) emoji which might give the volunteers some idea about how particular views or posters are viewed by the masses.

The main reason I am an infrequent poster is because of the strong subjectivist v objectivist debates that (used to) occur across the forum. I can see the ‘experts’ being in one camp or the other thus reinforcing the end point arguments again. If this can be avoided then the expert category sounds like it has potential, the example of Mark Dohmann sounds fantastic.

A thumbs down emoji would only further discord on the forums.

@muon* I suspect you are correct, however maybe the emoji could be made to be observed by volunteers only (not sure that's feasible). Probably an off-topic comment on my part anyway.

Toyally agree with muon*, and actually I would go a bit further and say that I would like to to see the like and laugh emojis disabled.  I tend to find the like emoji just entrenches the division of many forum members into teams of like thinkers.  The laugh emoji I see commonly used to laugh at people rather than as intended.

(I find it disappointing that the laugh emoji, intended as a sign of appreciation for a humorous post,  is sometimes misused as some kind of contemptuous laugh.)

As for the like emoji, I for one would definitely support its continuation. It's a quick way of showing agreement/support/appreciation.  (Yes, it may tend to entrench division, in some instances.)

I think it is good to see what people think (react), no matter what that may be.

Things can be humorous for a variety of reasons?  No?

This has been discussed at length previously, and we will never introduce a thumbs down reaction.

The use of reactions was a step forward IMO. Before them, you'd often get 4-5 successive posts saying nothing other than "+1+ or "I agree", "yes". The introduction of "Like" mostly stopped those posts. I use Like very often, and the Laugh when something is funny. Sure, the laugh one has been slightly weaponised by few, and often those members have been pulled up on it by the Volunteer Mods when there is clear and repeated use of it in this way.

I don't see a problem with the current implementation of post (and PM) reactions as it stands.
I don't think introducing any negative reactions would have any benefit whatsoever, and would only cause a lot of issues. I guess there's a reason why Meta has never introduced it, and why YouTube has backpeddled on their use of it too.

Yeah, this. It gets noticed and is obvious when it is intended to be derisory. It is a form of bullying and tolerance for that is low. Plausible deniability does not wash with this one. It certainly is not within the Spirit of Stereonet as articulated in the Website Guidelines. Volunteers can, and will, consider both removal of the insincere reaction and other measures at their disposal to dispel and discourage such poor behaviours.

Oh gosh, never thought of the "laugh" emoji like that, I have always used it when I have thought something was funny or humorous!

I am glad a thumbs down won't be an option though............

can't see the need for a thumbs down. If you don't like something, move on.

Because it isn't in your nature, Sue.

You can see what the Volunteer team sometimes have to deal with and consider though. It is certainly the thankless part of the role; along with the rest of it, which is also thankless. 😆

I thank you all the time 😛

In my own case, I also, had no real idea that the "laugh" symbol had been weaponised so as to become an insult and I have never used it in that way.

My take on using that is laughing  with the OP and others and not laughing at a post or person.

As for the other emojis, they are fine as they are and as has already been mentioned here, a thumbs up emoji is better and more efficient than a +1 and notifies agreement or encouragement, without necessarily wanting/needing to post a new response in the thread.

There's always one.

Sarcasm has been around since written communication was born.

To me it's pretty obvious when it's used for humour vs laughing at a stupid statement or comment.

  I use both :classic_biggrin:

Yes, I used it above. 🙂

And nothing wrong with that. :classic_biggrin:

If a post is considered to be particularly bad or inappropriate it can always be reported to a volunteer.
