Building a standalone Music Room - Shipping Containers?

Featured Replies

I have been skirting with the idea of building a dedicated music room off-site from the rest of the house for some time. This will have one-purpose, just to have hifi and listen to it!

Like everyone, cost is the defining factor, so I am trying to look at solutions where the shell is as good as it needs to be, but as economical as possible so the bulk of the funds can be spent on the internals (acoustic treatment, design and gear of course).

So, plenty of companies doing "Container Homes", so would love the community's feedback on the pros and cons, companies they might recommend to engage with, companies they may suggest I avoid etc etc

Ideally I want this to be just one room, with perhaps a small storage area toward the rear for vinyl etc. No requirement for plumbing (toilet, sink etc) as the house will be right next door.

Location - Perth

Metal Container - Biggest AC you can afford 🙂

GLWT project.

Thinking "outside the box" - well done 👍

You'll also need to look into local council regulations though. I know in VIC, at least in my municipality, the council has made it impossible to have a container in a residential zone. Not sure how much land you have to work with or if you're regional/residential?

Worth looking for sure, but the cost of combining multiple containers, making it water tight, and as mentioned above, HVAC considerations, might push it into small granny flat price anyway.

Definitely.

Some time ago, I looked into this idea and after some research, decided it was far more costly than I had ever imagined when factoring in everything needed to make it a completely viable solution and the "granny room" was only about 20% more expensive.

Regrettably the budget I had in mind was ultimately insufficient for either option:(

I went down the same path myself to discover the costs were prohibitive, as was anything considered a "habitable space". It had to be considered a "Store Room" or "Shed" under council laws, but there were possible workarounds still. This was how my existing double garage ended up being converted to a media room - and thankfully - 5 years later we ended up doing an extension and building a new garage in front of the old one anyway. Best of both worlds in the end!

Don't give up looking at workable solutions @Hydrology - you'll find a way. Can you repurpose an existing room in the house at all?

Speak to Cafad ( Jeff) his music room was a  Shipping Container

I know --I was subjected to it🤣

I have two identical spare rooms that back onto each otherthat may be a contender (have considered this in the past) - just not sure how much works would be involved to get them to where I want them to be. Of course having a dedicated building for a music room controls noise levels a little better, which is also part of the appeal.

I'll dig out the house plans and upload the two rooms for some suggestions on this option.

What’s the max width, length and height you can get? You may need to build a box inside of a box otherwise the sound may not be transparent enough.
