Single malt whisky

Featured Replies

Just picked up a bottle of Lagavulin 16YO at my local Dan Murphy for $79.80

Nick's Wine Merchants has it at $99.99

Too bad Dan's had only one bottle.

  • This probably isn't the place for this, but given that it incudes a storage facility for singe malt whisky... why not!   One of my COVID projects was the conversion of a 'nook' into a bar (o

Just had a tiny taste.

Ahhhhh!! Superb. Rich peaty goodness.

So did I brumby, I'm very pleased with it. Some places have it for over $110.

Ardbeg 10yr is still my favourite.. mmm that peat.

I'm heading OS for a quick trip in about two weeks, any recommendations for picking up a bottle at Sydney duty free when I get back ? From other trips their selection wasn't huge... up to around $150ish (or are there better bargains to be had elsewhere)

O Sydney

I discovered Highland Park c/- duty free.

I have HP 12yo open at the moment.

Quite recommendable.

sorry for the late reply to your suggestions, I must have missed the notification of it's posting

HP? is that what's written on the label ?

HP? is that what's written on the label

Let me check.

'Tis too. No wonder it was so nice on steak.

under $150 ? the booze not the steak

Sorry, I shouldn't be joking in this most serious of threads.

I found Highland Park 12 yo in my local Liquorland at about $70.

It looks like this:

you can get litre bottles at the duty free!

this is most serious (not)

thanks for the pic, I do now recall seeing the label around but for some reason dismissed it. If my travelling companion doesn't exceed her alcohol limit I can pick two bottles up for my budget. Now just have to remember what the local price is and see if at Duty free is actually cheaper

So maybe some everyday type whiskey rather than the once in while special is the go

you can get litre bottles at the duty free!

yes, that's right too

harder for price comparisons rrrrrr

I love Jura, that was one of my favourites on my recent trip to Scotland. Easy drinking and a good introduction to whiskies for those who dont have much of a taste for it.

I'm a serial lurker on this forum, but this thread is just asking for addition... my somewhat out-of-date collection of single malt (not including multiples, and missing a few).

Favourites at the moment are a toss up between The Glenlivet 18 YO and Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or.

A very nice lineup. It might be worth trying a Glenfarclas 15 yo to see if it adds a slightly different flavour.

I am drinking a Glenfarclas 21 yo at present and have to admit that it is not too shabby.

And just where have you been?

I love single malt, last year did a pilgrimage to the island of Islay, all I can say is that I would be happy to just retire there now, already scouting a property or two out. My favourite has always been Lagavulin, have been a fan for the past 20 or so years, just love it, my current favourite is 1989 distillers edition. Also picked up a bottle from the distillery when I was there that you can only get at the distillery as well and also got to drink some 40yo lagavulin. I bought almost every item in the gift shop, we are talking shirts, caps, limited edition stuff and even a copper decanter which was a real pain getting through customs and back to Oz, cost me a 3rd bag of luggage, damn you BA, than you Qantas.

If you get the opportunity, go to Scotland, it is so awesome, the people, place and of course whisky are amazing and Islay is magical.

Here is a tip for those that also like a beer, try some Innis and Gunn, found out about this when I was there and felt like something other than a Whisky at 11am (yeah I know sacrilege) and was given one of these, now I keep them stocked up all the time, they are amazing.

I am planning my next trip already, anyone else keen let me know :)

Ciao

Neil, I concur on the Lagavulin, although I have seldom had anything but the "run of the mill" 16yo stuff. It is and probably always will by my pick of the under $100 single malts.

I will be visiting Islay for a few days in July. Mrs Mustud kindly allowed me to allocate a week for a whisky exploration during a 6 week holiday in the U.K. The ground I had to give to get that free week!

Glad to read your post, Neil. I look forward to the week.

And just where have you been?

To be honest, Catty, I was thinking of leaving SNA back then.

But then, I realised I could not do it to you guys. You (the community) will just have to put up with me.

If anyone likes the lighter whiskies like glenmorangie you owe it to yourself to try aberlour abundah, absolutely georgeous. I don't normally put water in my whiskey but the tiniest splash brings this one alive. "Available from your friendly local Dan murphys"

Absolutely agree with the above - including the splash of water - a really lovely drop. My usual tipple is the Talisker- distiller's edition when I want to splash out.

For Melbournians- best way to try a few different whiskys is Chez Regine in Russell st - an amazing list.

No love for Campbeltown whisky here? After trying many different Whiskys, I have been loyal to the Springbank brands for many years now. No chill-filtering, no added colours, family owned, and the whole production process inhouse. Not to mention the heavenly taste. I usually have at least the 10yr Springbank and the 8yr Hazelburn at home. I also had the pleasure to visit a number of distilleries in Scotland a couple of years ago including Springbank on the Kintyre pensinsula. You can reach Kintyre by ferry from Islay.
