Single malt whisky

Dear god, I could not drink something that smelt like old socks. Oh, hang on, do you spill red on your socks? Could that could explain it :)

I've learnt that I do not like peat'y whiskey. Smells and tastes horrible. Whiskey from Islay is definitely not for me.

Hmm, and there is the bind. For all of the silly language the reviews can give you useful information on aspects of the taste, especially things like whether the whisky is peaty. Looks like you are condemned to continue reading the reviews.

I can put up with reading them, I can skim read pretty well :)

Found a forum that might be of interest to others -> http://singlemalt.com.au/

Bought a bottle of Macallan 12 year old, wow.. am VERY glad I did, it is delicious! Sweet and spicy notes, hints of ginger, pepper and caramel.. quite a long finish with no real burn (big :) in my book). Highly recommended, especially for beginners like me - it has quite a defined taste, and am glad it was my first bottle of single malt!

Just cracked open a bottle of this. Lovely fruity/woody taste, and warm without being too honey-like.

That looks great. Looks rich in colour..

Oh, I had an 18 year old of the Yamazaki a few weeks ago. It is an excellent whisky. There is also a 15yr old.

Sherry casks and food colouring.

Most whiskies have caramel added for that "rich" colour. Some, like Compass Box, do neither chill filtering nor colouring. Unless the label notes say that there is no colour added then I think it is safe to assume that the rich colour is not inherent in the whisky.

Doesn't mean it won't taste glorious, though.

I used to live quite close to the bells factory, the scotch goes into the barrel almost clear.

More than that, it is entirely clear. The colour traditionally comes from the barrels, but Caramel E150 is added at many distilleries for consistency of colour. Generally those owned by large companies.

I also recently purchased a bottle of the 12 year old Yamazaki and found it to be excellent. Never having tried Japanese Whisky, I must say that I am a fan.

Where do you guys purchase this and the other vintages from?

So the good wife has been looking after me of late

Sure not all Single malts but i reckon i can forgive her ;)

You're well spoilt Mike. I just finished my first ever bottle of single malt, and a lovely bottle it was too - Macallan 12 Fine Oak. Not sure where to go next though...

Now you need to work out what you like. Try a Speyside and a Hebrides and compare them. This will set your next expensive trajectory.

The Macallan 12yo Fine Oak is a great start for your single malt campaign. The 12yo and 15yo Fine Oaks are 2 of my personal faves (There's an awful lot of Macallans to choose from). The Macallan 12yo is a smooth and complex malt - a lovely drop.

I would suggest you try the malt which kicked off this thread - Laphroaig 10yo. It is a very different animal to the Macallan. If the Macallan is classical music, the Laphroaig is the rockstar of the single malt world. From the little island of Islay, Laphroaig shares the characteristics of it's Islay neighbours Ardbeg and Lagavulin. These are amongst the most full flavoured of all single malts, and my favourite region.

Try the Laphroaig 10yo, a great malt. It will show you the other end of the flavour spectrum. And if you enjoy that, try the Lagavulin 16yo, which, to my mind, blends the best qualities of the Macallan and the Laphroaig into an irresistible package. I don't know of a better whiskey for the price.

cheers

Hard to disagree with this, guys.

However for a better value elegant Islay than Lagavulin I suggest you check out the Ardbeg 10 from Nicks

Sensational value. Buy 6 bottles.

i've been drinking this one for a while now. my wifes maiden name is yamazaki so there is an expectation that i drink this one. also try some balvenie doublewood if you liked the yamazaki. two of my favourite easy drinkers and you can pick up the balvenie pretty cheap in aus now.

Thanks Brett. I think I actually prefer the real peaty drops, so will be heading down that road next. This one is going down very nicely though :(

if you get a chance try a bottle of hakushu 12 year old. pretty much the japanese version of an islay malt, peaty, smokey goodness. not peaty punch you in the face like laphroaig cask strength but still very nice.

Interesting, Mr Mustud.

I've just acquired my first bottle of Ardbeg. I'm very keen to try that, based on earlier recommendation.

The occasion awaits.

You say that as if there was something wrong with it.
