Single malt whisky

The AN OA certainly isn’t to be sneezed at. To me personally though, the Ten is like an old friend. I can drink all manner of whiskies, but as soon as I poke my nose into my Glencairn of Ten, it’s like being home again. All is well within my little world, haha.

I won this back in2015 at a Linn night at a shop that used to carry Linn gear. Signed by Gilad son of Ivor - still haven’t opened it. At the time it was the most expensive thing  I’d ever won in my life 😎

LOL - Mrs CE was more expensive on the first day...

Nice win tho'!

A few recent additions... the recently-balloted Starward Muscat Cask whisky, and a couple of peated duty-free airport acquisitions that were superb value for money.

Lovely colour to that Muscat cask whisky!

I'm a big Port Charlotte fan - especially their cask strength versions. The Laphroaig is not your typical smokey salty band-aid profile... noticeably sweeter and more muted due to the partial PX sherry cask maturation. There's no mistaking it's a Laphroaig though!

Having bought too many recently I gave the Muscat Starward a miss. I expect it will turn up at the regular outlets soon, might have to try it.

Starward insisted this was a ballot-only release with limited supply in this batch, but I've heard that before!

First time poster here - kindness pls 🙏

I've been thinking of trying a Japanese malt soon. Any recommendations under $100?

As a guide, I'm a huge fan of the standard Glenmorangie...

At under $100 personally I would stick with Irish whisky. Japanese is great but very expensive.

Japanese age statement whisky is prohibitively expensive at the moment. But there are a number of nice NAS offerings around the $100 mark. ***** from the Barrel I got recently for about $88 but it is only a 500ml bottle, and the ***** Coffey Malt and Coffey Grain are very nice. Coffey is the type of still used and has nothing to do with coffee.

Hi Rob

Glenmorangie is one of my favourites as well.

Single malt Japanese whisky for under $100!?

Now that is a bit tricky for a good 'un.

One that I enjoy is the ***** Coffey...

But! But it's going for a $135...

Plus postage!

Thanks for the suggestions... I forgot to say: doesn't have to be a single malt but that's probably off-topic..  (I noticed some Japanese blended malts at my local bws..  that's what got me thinking...)

I think it was the Suntory Toki that caught my eye and tempted my wallet as a Father's Day self-present ...

I've had quite a few bottles of the Toki, it's reasonable for the price.

LOL, Nikki, not ***** seems to work...Masataka Taketsuru might be turning in his grave though! As he was the first Japanese person to learn how to make whisky, it should be well regarded...

I do like their style...

And of course Japanese whisky would taste better sampled while one of my Sansui amps is playing through my Yamaha speakers, wouldn't it?? 😁🗾🇯🇵🗻

Only if you drove a Toyota sedan, watch Shintaro on a Sony Trinitron TV and wear a Kimono whilst eating sushi rolls and have a Bonsai on top of your Yamaha speakers...whilst playing 'The Vapours'...I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so...and only then! :hyper:

Today I was given a couple of bottles of Aussie (local SA) single malt by my brother.  For a variety of reasons, this was an unusual thing to happen.

But it all made sense when he explained the back story.

There's a farm on Yorke Peninsula that has been in the family for more than 150 years and holds a lot of cherished memories stretching back as one ever-present constant over our lifetimes.   When we were kids we spent the whole of the Xmas holidays there with cousins, grandparents etc.

Several years ago, he obtained a quantity of the best malting barley from the farm and had a local distillery turn it into 30 bottles of single malt whisky, which he's now giving to friends and family with a connection to the place.

It seemed like a novel idea to me - and a very nice one at that! 🙂
