Must Check that out.

I listened to "A Love Supreme" on the weekend. I enjoyed this more than the past, couldn't turn it off.

Mind you I was listening to it with my new system for the first time.

Cheers

  • @brownemi dropped around for some tunes tonight. We covered Destroyer, Kurt Vile, War On Drugs, Ben Webster, Shining Bird, Cure, Massive Attack, Richard Hawley, Japan, Mark Hollis, Fischer-Z and Bad

I've spent the last hour listening to Katherine Jenkins' 'Living a Dream'.

Katherine is a 26 year old Welsh Mezzo Soprano (nice looking to boot), who has an incredible voice...........no, make that awesome, unbelievable, voice.

It's definitely not mainstream, and contains mostly classical pieces with the occasional recent musical item and some old faithful's thrown in the mix.

Songs include:

L'Amore Sei Tu (I will always love you)

One Fine Day

Music of the Night (Phantom of the Opera)

Nessun Dorma (usually sung by male tenors).....incredible

Amazing Grace

Torna a Surriento (un-bloody believable)

Dont Cry for me Argentina

and many, many others.

Not a CD for everyone, but guaranteed to send shivers down the spine of blokes like Amfibius and Hired Goon and TonyM, etc.

If you hate Opera or Classical it's not for you, but if you love excellent female vocals it's just bloody sublime.

Sorry I'm a bit late reading this thread

KJ always sings the Welsh anthem at the rugby games. Last time the All Blacks played there, we brought along one of our own homegrown kiwi songbirds, Hayley Westernra. Not as big in the lung department, but a powerful and good looking girl all the same. I bought her odyssey album and have been pleasantly surprised how much I like it

Thanks Norpus.

I negleted to mention I'm a bit of a Coltrane fan. I've got "Blue Train" already ;)

My Favourite Coltrane Album has been "live at the village vanguard" (pretty full on).

Others include "Giant Steps", "Coltrane Sound"....

There's lots of CDs in my collection that I never got around to listening to, including the box set that contains "A Love Supreme".

Cheers,

Danton

A most excellent album. There was a "remastered and expanded" release of this last year that I must check out.

I really can't believe I'm the only one impressed by Mary Gauthier's album "Mercy now".

If you've heard it and even if you've hated it, I'd appreciate your opinions.

Cheers

I've only had time to hear bits 'n' pieces. It kinda reminds me of a female Johnny Cash.

Hehe.....fair enough - she does have a Southern twang, but I'm hard-pressed to see much else in the way of similarities.

Anyway, I was having a few reds last night, so maybe she sounded better than she deserved to  But I am enjoying that album and it seems to improve with each listen.

dont be disheartend tony, music is such a personal thing, I know at times I've explored stuff that people have been talkign about and foudn it not my cup of tea and sure theres stuff I listen to an adore yet others probalby hate the sound off !

by the way guys after the gardenign program on the abc sunday afternoon, htere was a music video from an aussie lass collette somthing, liked the soudn of that, any one know who she is ?

Ok now that you've finished with the cover what was the music like..?

Quite mesmerising - I have typically not liked this type of music from classical songbirds - but the rendition of her voice on the B&Ws is rather excellent. Even the odd maori song included , which I used to cringe at, is quite beautiful. (Beautiful is not a word I usually associate with my music tastes)

I'd actually like to go to a concert of hers I think - whereas have never really wanted that much to see Kiri Te Kanawa for example whom in contrast has been world class for yonks

A remastered My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, wonder what that sounds like? I have the original on vinyl which sounds good to me.

Also been spinning The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (vinyl) which is a patchy album but the track "Fire" is always a blast. I don't know if this has been available for many years.

OK, call me a sucker for punishment, but I want to recommend another female singer/songwriter who I reckon warrants a good listen. At least I'm really enjoying her music.

Patty Griffin......sounds at times a lot like Cheryl Crow.....at other times Emmylou Harris (maybe dueting with Linda Ronstadt) Then she sounds a bit like Roberta Flack. Then like.........The album I'm listening to is "Children running through"

Certainly well crafted music if it falls within your personal taste parameters. I won't even try to describe the genre as it's such a rich and varied tapestry that it defies categorisation.

Heard a track on the radio and was intrigued by the sticker on the cover when I looked for the CD at JB. "Patty Griffin is an absolute inspiration to every songwriter who's fortunate enough to come across her music - Missy Higgins" "Patty Griffin can do no wrong - Kasey Chambers" " I can't think of a more beautiful singer and a better songwriter alive today - Dave Matthews"

As I type, I'm listening to track 7 "No bad news". I'd be seriously worried about anyone who could sit impassive and immobile while that track was playing. Now track 8 "Railroad Wings"......just beautiful! Now Track 9 (I'm a slooowww typer)....very soulful........The whole album is solid!

PS Most of the music I love takes a few listens to "get into".

Cheers

Tony

I don't think she sounds like Johnny Cash at all

If there are any Finn brothers in the house be sure to checkout their recent album "Everyone is here" Much more enjoyable than their earlier albums, simpler music with less keyboard and more guitar and delicious harmonies. Takes about 3 listens before it really gels.

Any Concrete Blonde fans here? l have their greatest hits playing now, very enjoyable l must say

"Caaaroline...........dum, dum, dum, dum.............Caaaroline"

Love it ................................might go give it a whirl mondie.

Yes I have a few of their albums too. The "Vampire" song is a bit daggy as a concept but sounds good. And then there is the sad "Joey" song... etc. etc. I Haven't heard the first album fo a while though - hmmm, must be somewhere around here.

G'day,

A great CD, that one. "Caroline", "Mexican Moon", "Ghost Of A Texas Ladies Man", "Someday", and a beaut cover of Leonard Cohen's "Everbody Knows". Although I still think the original version of Andie Prieboy's "Tomorrow Wendy" is better than the version that appears here (too polished, IMHO).

it really is very well recorded, lot of old jazz standards and sounds sensational. she has a nice voice and a very slick singing style. Great sound stage with this cd. the performace fills the room with sound and theres details every where. lovely music. think I'll get some more of her discs. she has her own website here

http://www.clairemartinjazz.com/index1.html

I was thinking about a post I saw from Drizt earlier today, where he said he has difficulty listening to classical recordings largely because they are poorly recorded (or at least that's how I remember it, apologies Drizt if I have muddled it up). Well, I just finished listeneing to Jim Reeves and Doris Day on my outside system (Polk exterior speakers, old Rotel cd and amp, rcd965 and RA980 I think, which someone at a shop once thought he should advise me was "low to mid fi", hmmm). Well, even at my most charitable, I could not say it sounds like my dedicated system. But did we enjoy ourselves? Yep, and only 1 beer!

I guess I am pondering, would poor quality reproduction (and I'm not saying that that's what I was listening to, as its a bit better than that) be better than not listening at all?

Jim Reeves, Doris Day? THESE ARE NOT ON SPEARMINT'S TEST DISC!! But, take your pleasure where you can I say.

Too right it is. It's always the music first.

People my age probably first heard their favourites on a little TRANNY. Yep it's music first.

you already know my response :P

I find listening to some bad records on low-fi equipment to be plenty satisfying when having a few drinks. I think my problem is listening to bad recordings on hi-fi equipment is that I know how good it should sound, and when it doesnt live upto expectations its very dissapointing.
