Theatre 237

Featured Replies

My wife and I are starting our home theatre build. We wanted to start it back in January. But with covid 19 that put a hold on all spending. But now we're back on track and ready to get started

Our room is a sunken lounge room that is 4.3mx4.5m with a 2.7m ceiling. There is a large window that we will brick up, also there is no door to this room. So we will either be installing a door, or a couple layers of heavy curtains. I also need to build a frame/ cabinet to house everyrhing. Plus rip out the carpet for something much darker. Also put in a bunch of sweet lighting and acoustic panels

We will be installing a 130" AT cinemascope screen, running a sony vw570es projector with an anamorphic lens

M&K s150 LCR and M&K s150t tripoles sourounds and rears.

Svs sb16 ultra

Energy 200 sub

Psb 200 sub

Denon 4520

Emotiva xpa 3 (LCR)

Oppo udp 203

Isotek Aquarius evo 3 power conditioner

Once I get all my gear back in the room I'll also purchase a mini dsp to run my subs

Painting has started. We went with the dulux home theatre black for the front wall and ceiling. It looks really good, but I've heard its a nightmare to keep cleans. So I didn't want any of the walls that people might touch to be that colour. So we weren't without of the darkest charcoul colours that dulux offers. The black was also really hard to get a nice finish, you definitely need to buy good quality rollers to get any kind of decent finish, just FYI

Acoustic panels have been ordered. I was going to make them myself, but to be honest, I just can't be bothered.

I'm just starting to make a design for the front stage frame, and will hopefully have something ready to build soon.

Looks like it's going to be a great HT setup! :)

thats a lot of subs for that room. i guess pb at the front 2 others behind seating?

personally wouldnt brick the window, what air con do you have? evap or refrig? i would just have some very thick curtains a similar colour to the walls. wait till you are it for a while and see how air flow, temp goes inside the room first.

yes some of the "black" paint is a pain to work with and yes the rollers/brushes used make a big difference. points for doing the full ceiling and dark carpet, too many forget the room is a "cinema" style not a family room.

points for older denon.. not the current atmos blah blah

i wouldnt be bricking up that window as a theatre room is considered as a habitable room. once you brick the window up it will no longer be compliant.

no need to brick up... for full light control either use HEAVY double block out and pelmet curtains

or for really full block out and by that I mean 100% no light entry. check out company below local aussie made to order

https://www.screenaway.com.au

saw it at @Quark setup for windows he had. and yep full block out you just slide the blind down done. or can get motorised

I got a set for my own room

can see on youtube how effective.

Ive got reverse cycle, so airflow shouldn't be a problem.

I wA thinkomg that myself. But were going to be in this house for 10-15+ years. If I some day have to cut out a small window when we move, that's no  bother.

Plus we have neighbours that sit quite close next door. So the brick will help with volume levels.

Better to have the thick curtains with Polymax insulation behind cut to fill the window frame. Polymax is solid enough to free stand, you just might need to run a thin bit of timber baton in front to make sure it doesn't fall out of the window frame. This will give you hidden acoustic treatment as well as a much simpler method to return the home to "stock". You never know what the future holds in regards to moving before you plan, or why building inspectors may need to look at the house.

My HT room has 3 small windows and you can't see somebody a metre in front of you with the projector turned off on a bright sunny day. I don't even have the polymax insulation, just semi block out roller blinds with proper block out curtains with sealed pelmets in front.

Perhaps a roller shutter on the outside of the window?

The option of letting light into the room when not in use is appealing.

I got started on the front sound stage today. Bolted to the wall with ramset 10x80mm wall anchors. 35x90mm timbre.

All up its taken me about 5 hrs to get this far, tomorrow I'll finish all the vertical frames for the 130" screen

Wow that looks amazing. Well done.

Sorry if i might be a bit slow but the reference to "Theatre 237" was from the Shining?

Can't wait to see your progress.

Thanks mate, yeah its coming along real nice. Overtime at work has slowed down progress at the moment, gotta pay for all this **** haha

Yeah man direct reference from the shining. Definitely one of our faves. We wanted to do the whole room with the same carpet from the overlook, but I couldn't find it, and to get it made was around 12k. So **** that

That is awesome :) Definitely keen to see your progress. Very exciting times.

Just one more question, where is the bath tub going hahaha

Haha nice! Follow us on instgram if you like theatre.237

is your AT screen 2.35:1?

diy or buying it?

  • Author

Buying it mate, I figured i was doing enough haha. I did consider making it..

ok just out of interest doing a 140" spandex screen, subject to major room config change. interesting that the speakers will be 100mm from screen as some seem to place very close. will you have grills off?

  • Author

I'm going with a woven screen, so my speakers could be as close as possible. But I've gone with a 100mm clearance behind the screen, just to make sure I don't get any muffling. I've been told I could have gone as close as 40mm... but what's 60mm between friends haha
