The Boss will hide that from me till it's ready for the table.  If she doesn't it'll disappear into my stomach in no time and there won't anything left for dinner.  Infact I'm banned from going anywhere near the kitchen b4 dinner!

Pollan says everything he's learned about food and health can be summed up in seven words: "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants."

Bingo. The critical word is "food", and the implication is whole food. Food "technology" has a lot to answer for in terms of introducing diet related health problems. Our bodies are designed to process whole foods, not processed pseudo food.

Nothing wrong with meat as long as it's a part of a balanced diet that consists of lots of veg as well. Same with the white carbs (bread, pasta, white rice, potatoes) - you don't need to avoid them, just don't make them a huge part of every meal.

Carbs are pushed on us everywhere though. The government still pushes the food pyramid where carbs should be the majority of our intake. Cereal, Toast, Sandwiches, pasta, noodles would be an everyday diet for many who think they are still eating well, ie. no junk food.

We go to a suburban "black label" food court once a week where many meals are made to order. Try getting a low or no carb meal, except in the salad bar it is impossible. I don't avoid carbs, but I do try to limit them and sugar where I can but usually make that night my carb night.

yeah it perplexed me when the film said as though carb is mighty fine it's all the meat and dairy that's causing the health issues.

they go so far as to suggest as long as u stay vegan u dont get fat lol

Vegans wouldn't like my breakfast today. A mash up of Scrambled eggs with capsicum, lasts night left over corned beef and wilted spinach. Cutting out carbs at dinner time is easy, it's breakfast and lunch which is more of a challenge.

They can, but can carnivores?

Sorry, you lost me at vegan. It’s a lifestyle choice that tries to validate itself thru virtues of healthy eating. I’ve known a few anemic vegetarians in my time. Our bodies have evolved to be meat and vegetable eaters, it’s not rocket science.

I’d rather trust the CSIRO than some quack pushing veganism.

Not all vegans readily "choose" to be so out of some righteous belief. Some are forced into it by allergies and intolerances. Also, there's plenty of iron to be found in leafy, dark greens, legumes and some nuts & seeds.

Mind you, living with a vegan can be very hard at times and don't even get me started on trying to find a suitable restaurant for a night out!

Well not all.

The same applies to the 'carnivores' I guess.

I guess, but what sort of allergy effects ALL non vegan foods? I would suspect that would be VERY rare. My wife has to follow the FODMAP diet due to intolerances. Very frustrating for a women who was fine until she drank river water in central Vic and contracted Giardia (sp?). Has never been the same since and she loved her fruits that are mostly a no go zone now.

So are you saying your partner cannot eat any flesh (including fish), dairy or eggs? Tough.

The term "righteous belief" carries negative connotations.

None of the vegans I know are "righteous" in their beliefs

Not really, just means they believe they have made a morally 'right' decision.

And I'm the same, of the vegans I know, none are preachy or judgemental of my (or others') omnivorous ways.
