you guys are just too funny.

yep, you figured it out.

I either:

1. blackmailed Caniffe into making this thread and proposing the non counting of OT forum posts or,

2. hacked Caniffe's account and posted this thread myself

In case you missed it, I actually agreed with removing post counts all together.

It seems to me that the biggest group of people who actually care about post counts at all actually seem to hang out in OT.

feeling guilty are you..................i mentioned no names ...................could have been from any where......in fact i was thinking the dtv section.....thought you had me on ignore...........would appreciate it if you kept it that way

thank you :)

oh look another smiley

Actually this got me thinking.

If anyone wants to see why the anonymous rating system is such a bad idea, read this thread from this point onwards.

OT, what a wonderful place to be.

In a thread discussing the merits of counting OT posts, which has most of us asking "Why does it matter? What or who has prompted this?", your contempt for OT is thinly veiled.

I hope dig doesn't do his jumping to conclusions trick, because you'd be his leading candidate for instigating this. :winky:

On a serious note: please be careful Andrew. As one who has been in plenty of childish barnies in other subforums (hell, you even had your own stalker in HD displays), taking such a pious stance on what OT adds (or rather doesn't add) to this community, on the basis of the thread you have linked to, is only going to strip away any credibility your arguments might have in this discussion... :)

If you’re considering a rating system can we rate a thread as opposed to an individual?

Is it possible to use a word count to add to a users post count, i.e.10+ words before the poster gets a +1 post count? At least this way the +1 and the  brigade will need to add some text to their posts. :P

thought you had me on ignore...........would appreciate it if you kept it that way

Don't worry, you still are and always will be.

Only saw your post because Kazz replied to it.

If you weren't talking about me, then who ?

yorac and I are public enemies number 1 in OT, and now that yorac is departed from the boards I'm not sure who else you might have been referring to ?

your contempt for OT is thinly veiled.

Thinly veiled ?

Obviously I'm not being clear enough, let me clarify.

Whilst I think that OT has the potential to be a great resource, the cliques and gang mentality currently make it the boil on the bum of DTVForum (IMHO of course).

I hope dig doesn't do his jumping to conclusions trick, because you'd be his leading candidate for instigating this. :winky:

Once again, you conspiracy theorists seem to think I have some magical power over Caniffe.

I'm sure he can set you all straight on that

I'm sorry, I thought we were talking about OT ?

What does having some rabid physco stalking me have to do with my credibility ?

edit: Yes, I just responded to another person on my ignore list. Not that I have to explain myself, but this thread has taken a personal turn and I've taken the option to read all the posts.

if you think its just a place to crack fart jokes..maybe its not for you...maybe there are other websites

Wow. I am just lost for words at how offensive this is.

May I suggest a brief TIME-OUT as this very thread is evolving into another typical day in another notorious sub forum of the recent past, ironically, as it discusses the moralities or otherwise of OT.

The last three pages have done nothing to add to the discussion when an opinion is expressed (however possibly controversial...but expressed nonetheless)..and then clarified ....and with no personal names being mentioned.

A certain degree of defensivness has come to the fore resulting in one or two personally directed shots.

Tea is being served in the foyer gentlemen :)

..there is also a Clay Pit in the OT for those who dont like tea but prefer something stronger :winky:

Can we get back to .....

Hi,

It has been discussed previously, and now with a larger user base the post count-o-meter is perceived to be rising in importance.

If you vote no, you are indicating post counts should remain true for any post, regardless of quantity.

If you vote yes, you are indicating that post counts should be stripped for posts that are deemed not contributing to DTV.

What say you?

Non elitist, non separatist, convincing and logical

somebody pass some Sugar

:winky:B)

Sheesh.

Thread reported.

Well it should be.

As Caniffe is reading it I won't bother.

:P:D:lol:

We were online buddies then ..and we have developed to be friends in the true sense of the word. This is something that you should realise is not just your domain, there is a small group of us, all of whom you seem to have taken a dislike to who are also close friends, as you yourself put it , true friends and we will stand by each other.

You see momaw that was all motivated because it was perceived to have been done in spite...nasty word that spite..and we all know what perceptions of spite can lead to..... Somethng that you are also very good at

.....we never held grudges.....Well you, Mello, certainly hold grudges now.

if you think its just a place to crack fart jokes..maybe its not for you...maybe there are other websites Just as momaw does I also find this very offensive.

OK, who voted "yes" 22 times??

PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS.

This thread is purely about numerical counters and/or ratings. The rest of the BS can be taken to personal messages.

I have never nor will I ever understand the need to have post counts or anything like that on any forum that does not have a "for sale" section, which this one has not, nor will it probably have one in the near, or for that matter distant future.

What does the post count actually represent?

It neither describes the contributed content nor does it give information about the users intelligence.

You would actually have to read the users comments to ascertain if this person is a valuable member of the community or just another troll.

You have to do this anyway so the post count they have means nothing if the continued content of their posts also mean nothing.

They could still indeed be a troll with a 500+ post count, so again the question is asked as to the relevance of a displayed post count at all.

Having seen a vast number of these sorts of situations over my lifetime to date, I have observed that the longer it takes to come to a decision (or a "non-decision" decision), the 'hungrier' each viewpoint/side will become.

Hunger must be satiated - and if it isn't; irrational delirium usually sets in.

Perhaps if there was a "D-Day" assigned for the announcement of what will (or won't) take place regarding "numerical counters and/or ratings" from that time onwards - all the posturing and finger pointing and childishness that tends to get on people's goats, would be somewhat reduced. Even if announcing a "Decision Day" doesn't stop individuals who are hell bent on proving that they're ignorant intellectual minnows in the mean time - the bliss to be had from knowing their incessant ravings (which lean from the extreme of bleating like an innoccent lamb on one hand to spitting like a feral cat with a skewer up it's derriere on the other) will soon come to a definitive end, should be reward enough for being decisive.

If Kevin Rudd can be decisive, (even if the decision is to leave the "status quo" :) ) why can't we?:D

PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS.

I will kill your Monster

Why does +1 cause someone to have more fun in a subforum? Why would +0 make that person be active any less - isn't the point of your fun to post in those threads, or is the point of the fun adding to a post count?

Would you really miss anyone who left because their OT posts didn't count any more?

I'd rather the post counts reflected on-topic posts, because digital TV and AV discussion is the whole site's raison d'être.

I agree get rid of the post count all together who needs the ego trip? I don't even look at the post count why even have it? Is it there so everyone can see who has the biggest......um  mouse! It brings back memories of those days when I was a wee lad seeing who could pee the furthest away from the urinal......I didn't win!:ninja:

Reason for this thread:

I said last year when the time was right I would bring this discussion up again (since all of you bayed for blood last time I made a change without asking first :P).

The point of this thread clearly made here:

What say you?

and here:

This feedback in this thread is precisely why I started it. :)

So discuss, make good points

This thread was only commenced on Mon 7th . Some members only get to the forum on weekdays, others only on weekends, so just courtesy to let as many as possible to have their say.

Caniffe indecisive ?? Anything but……anything but !

After being away for the last few days and just catching up on the last 4 pages all I can say is......... :(

Digi, well said! ;)

Caniffe, scrap the post count altogether, replace it with the current naming system (member, senior member, etc) with graduation points that you set and are hidden from members. A promotion should be a surprise! (and problematic members can have their benchmark elevated to an appropriate level)

All new members can be called "probationary members".

Force a PM (that dialogue box is hard to miss) saying "you need 5 posts to......" in really big letters!

Would you really miss anyone who left because their OT posts didn't count any more?

I'd rather the post counts reflected on-topic posts, because digital TV and AV discussion is the whole site's raison d'être.

there we go................the gangs all here now...............took a while but the members stand has the house full sign up

Would you really miss anyone who left because their OT posts didn't count any more?

Possibly Yes I would.

He would probably not leave because his posts are not credited to him by way of post count, but more likely to leave because the +0 post count makes him feel his post isn’t recognized as a real post to the forum, just a sh*t post, of no worth, of no real value.

BTW there are plenty of other posts in the upper levels of the Forum which fall into this category.

Caniffe indecisive ?? Anything but……anything but !

I think my meaning has been somewhat distorted or misunderstood. If it's down to the latter, I apologise for using language that didn't fully clarify my intended meaning. <_<

You have quite rightly pointed out that this thread was only commenced on Mon 7th.

What I was urging from Caniffe was a definitive statement as to a date when the decision would be announced and a time for the implimentation set.

It may seem fine to discuss a particular topic that has relevence to the total forum experience of every last forum member; whether they be newbees or veterans, on the basis of a non-timetable specific assessment and operating procedure refinement regime - but if the implimentation of whatever decision is made without any warning let alone the courtesy of some notification... the likelihood of that forum experience being tarnished is much greater than it would be if the authority proposing possible change provided a timetable.

Why is it unreasonable to inquire as to when it will be, that the debate ends and the implimentation (if there even is any) begins?
