Bunyip's Boudoir

Featured Replies

Its a work in progress, but after years of exile, I've reunited the best components of my kit, upgraded my amp and am trying to find the best speakers to work in this room with the limitation of being up against the wall. Also my wife (the 9th component) has a certain aversion to gear dominating the room, but seems to be coming around.

I know I am sinning by not putting those book shelves on stands, but my wife doesn't dig stands. Thus my quest for a pair of floor standers.

By the way, a big thanks to johnnydarko for the Cayin A-55TP amp. He gave me a very fair price, and was a joy to deal with. Thanks to Tricka I guess as well, who was the original owner. :)

Gotta love SNA!

Nice setup but why are the speakers placed near the fireplace?

Nice setup looks cosy and inviting as well. Yes I see the 9th componet influence there but that create a good WAF. So stick with it and keep her involved. Do you have a special chair that you use for serious listening of new material?

Nice BR

Here are some the accouterments I have scattered around.

Did someone say vinyl? Bah, give me a wax cylinder any day.

stereo.net - the speakers are there because that's pretty much the only place for them to be in that room. The fire is a fake gas fire, so doesn't really pump out the heat. Once I get my new speakers, and if I get worried about the heat factor, I can always move them sideways yo sit on the floor when we have it on, and then park them back on the ledge.

Bluroo - cheers. It's rapidly becoming my favourite room in the house. And very cozy in winter with the fire, friends, wine and tunes. WAF factor is rising steadily as I am letting her lead the decorating and I do the tunes.

Special chair - good point. All our chairs are off to the side as you can see, so I slide one of the single seaters to the left out into the sweet spot if I need. But actually, I tend to just drag those cushions under my head and lie on the rug with my feet facing the speakers and I'm in heaven!

Nice one Bunyip - love the room...it looks to have a great vibe, and a good chillout spot for listening to tunes.

The '70's receiver is also very cool, although I can't identify it...Kenwood perhaps?

Free tweak that might be worth trying...the blue cushions on the floor in front of the fireplace would make great first reflection/floor bounce absorbers if you placed one each directly in front of each speaker. You may or may not hear a diff, but it'll take two seconds to do and, well, that's the theory anyway.

Cheers, Dave :)

Have you considered moving the speakers to where you single seat chairs are located? You could then sit on the lounge to listen.

Hi Chickenism, good to see you again.

Yeah, the vibe in the room is great for this little black Bunyip.

The receiver is a Pioneer SX-5000, just picked it up this weekend. I've attached some photos. Love VU meters.

I'm using it as a tuner, ultimately it will wind up at work as part of my retro kit I'm putting together. I do love analog controls for tuners. Forget push buttons - I can find the station and fine tune much quicker by hand.

I am lying on the floor in the room as I type this and have tried your tweak. I would rate it as a 20 buck tweak. Brightness dropped poofteenth of a milifart.

In fact you read my mind. The rug is new, and not as long as the previous one. So I dropped the cushions there and thought to myself that a row of them would be great visually, and now, acoustically!

I doff my cap to you, my fellow member of the poultry family.

The Pioneer SX-5000 receiver was part of the Pioneer rondo 5000 package back in 1979. It was the first system I ever owned when I started working, I still have the PL-516X TT and the cassette deck that came with the system the rest is long gone now.

Be careful not to put low efficient speaker on it, that's how mine blew a channel and parts are no longer available for it.

If I remember the receiver is 15 wpc not a lot of power, but nice sounding matched with the right speakers.........

Hi Handy - cheers for that.

I'm nor running my speakers through it - just using it as a tuner.

Great room- inviting and comfy looking! I'll be keen to see how it progresses!

Gorgeous room there, Bunyip - looks like a great place to listen to music :) I do think you are right, your speakers would be better off on stands.

BTW, since when was a Bunyip a member of the poultry family? I thought it was some kind of mythical aboriginal creature, more in common with reptiles than with birds ...

Great room Bunyip .

Hi Keith,

Since I'm on the hunt for floorstanders I'm not that worried - this is short term.

And as for your other question - who says that a mythical aboriginal creature which lurks in billabongs gobbling up unsuspecting victims isn't some form of giant mutant chicken hmm???

I did indeed think about that Tele. But the room seemed to want them at the narrow end. And this is really set up more as a chill out room with the best possible tunes in it's confines, rather than a room designed for proper listening.

As long as you enjoy it. It looks very relaxing. I will be interested to see how it evolves. How dead is the Rega?

Deadish.

Depending what mood it's in it will have an epileptic fit and stop playing the disc 15 seconds into the first track. Other CD's it will play the whole way through.

Annoying, but makes life thrilling. Every time I put a disc on it's like spinning the roulette wheel. How long will it play?....

I'm OK with it though cos I know I'll be getting a new player with the speakers.

Nice setup mate, the speakers on stands will improve them significantly.

Did you make the rack? It looks good and I'm considering making something like that myself.

Cheers, flemo.

That's a beautiful room you have there giant mutant chicken.

Thanks for sharing the pics.

Cheers,

Jake

LOL....Might need a new laser by the sounds of it. Nice player.

flemo - the rack is something I bought in the States. It's called Salamander Systems and is infinetley adjustable. The legs are threaded and you slide the shelves on then tighten the washes and nuts to hold them. They are specifically designed for audio gear and you can get amp stands, spikes for the feet etc. Don't know if they have an Aussie dealer. More info here:

Jake - cheers! :). I'll be a really happy giant mutant avian once I get my new speakers.

Tele - It's been on the bench 3 times. New laser was the first thing. It was converted to Aussie power supply when I moved back from the States and has never been the same since. That's OK, I've already accepted its demise and am now fired up about upgrading.

Heheh.... GMC.

Better than GFC I guess.

Or even KFC.

And the speakers I like are PMC.

I think I better go now.

Great room for having a few Friday beers on the couch with some friends :P

Likewise from me, the room looks great. But bunyip = giant mutant chicken? Er, giant mutant emu perhaps!
