Feel free to discuss

Does this sort of stuuf help the average consumer?

And they wonder why the average joe/jill is not buying into either HD format in any great numbers?

Cheers,

Karen

The faster we get to one format, the better for consumers

If it was anyone other than the head of Sony marketing saying this, I'd give them the benefit of the doubt.

But you just know that if they were to become the sole format, region coding (and BD+) would be implemented on every disc, and the discounts we've seen because of the "war" would disappear very quickly.

and perhaps she should learn to count:

"Motion pictures can be delivered on either format, but five studios have elected to release their titles exclusively on Blu-ray, and only two have elected the other," Garra said.

hmmm, Universal: 1, Paramount: 2, Dreamworks: 3 ...

"In fact, nine of the top ten movies this year are only available on Blu-ray."

top ten movies based on ??

Mis-truths are indeed lies when they are intended to decieve the uniformed.

Depends on how you look at it, it could be said, correctly, that Dreamworks is a subsiduary of Paramount.

It could also be said that MGM is part of Sony, but they only own 20% though. The figures can say whatever you want them to if you massage them enough.

Aren't Wienstien and First Look also HD-DVD exclusive

Paramount and Dreamworks are both owned by Beuna Vista, but they are definitely separate studios.

Never heard of first look, but last news I heard is that Wienstein haven't made a definitive decision yet (but I could be wrong).

DreamWorks, MTV Films and Nickelodian all owned by Paramount, Paramount owned by ViaCom. Buena Vista is owned by Disney

And for how long are they going to push this rubbish.........

She said Blu-ray would prevail because of the format's ability to store more data (50 gigabits compared to HD DVD's 30GB) and greater support from the major movie studios.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment managing director, Michele Garra, said at a presentation in Sydney.

You have to admit, Blu-ray is KILLING HD DVD in Australia. It might be ok for Toshiba to have cheap players now, but they need to start getting software out in the stores and here's an idea, advertise the format !!!

JB is doing an outstanding job promoting Blu-ray, theres stores with the wall of 1080p Blu-ray look fantastic.

Although Toshiba had Clive Peeters and HN, they just stack there players with all the other sd dvd players.

Oh Jeebus! Another one.

How many is that this week?:P

Saying one format is "killing" the other is like saying Mallet Company A is killing Mallet Company B in the croquet mallet wars. The numbers are so minutely small that they really only matter to the handfuls of enthusiasts who post on HR forums.

Come on.. I prefer HD-DVD, but Blu-ray is dominating Australia no doubt. This might change with Toshy's new promotion's.

Daniel.

Sorry Daniel you beat me to the post before I got to qualify that statement.

DreamWorks, MTV Films and Nickelodian all owned by Paramount, Paramount owned by ViaCom. Buena Vista is owned by Disney

That will teach me to post quickly without checking facts.

Of course I meant Viacom, not Beuna Vista

Well if there new promotion is a just a price drop on the players, which will countered by a $699 PS3 and drops in the price of the Sony 300 and introduction of the Sharp, HD DVD will continue to be lucky to maintain there estimated 20% of the Aus market.

The key to the BD promotion in this country is connecting with the purchase of 1080 displays, which stats show are walking out the door at the moment (yes I know 1080p is a load of bull on most smaller displays but joe public is buying into it big time)

Sony is one of the main players in the display market, as is Panasonic, both are pushing BD as a package with there new displays, this is how and when joe average will buy a HD player, extra $700 with that new $3000 display to make it look as good as in the shop, yes please sir.

Does joe public ever see HD DVD disks in shop, nope, get confused and think HD DVD is just an upscaling DVD, you bet.

Toshiba are doing a crap job in Aus, BD a much better one, period.

Not the same in US, as we all know on here, and yes that is the battle zone.

And as I know some of the replies to come, yes HD / BD is a very small part of the total market compared to DVD (not the point)

From any future confusion of which studio supports what format or what studio is an affiliate of another, just refer to my sig. :)

Weinstein was supposed to be an HD-DVD exclusive studio and so far have only released films on HD-DVD, however they have had a 6 month dry spell.

As a matter of interest, I noticed an ad for Blu-ray on Channel 7 last night in an ad break between segments of 'Species 111' .

So it seems Sony are stepping up their promotions, Toshiba need to do the same as a counter-measure otherwise HD player discounts will be of little benefit.

HD DVD movies also need to be VERY visible alongside these newly discounted players in the big chain stores like Big W and Target.

Toshiba Australia really need to get promotional advertising behind their product immediately, the Christmas 'sales' are ideal for a massive launch, I am sure Sony will make this an opportunity.

Yeah well if your sig was accurate...

and just so as not to cause an argument I refer to the fact you have left off some major HD DVD supporters in the hardware section (Onkyo, Integra and Meridian). To be accurate you would have to have all supporters of both sides (which would require a very large sig block). Any less and a bias can be introduced.

I have no problem with your sig, I just wouldn't be referring to it as evidence of anything.

Yeah well if your sig was accurate...

Yeah you're right, I really should remove Weinstein.

Well here's something you may not know but other studio support of HD DVD (some of which is exclusive) includes:

Focus Features, Nickelodeon Movies, MTV Films, Dimension Films, First Look Studios, HBO, and Image Entertainment (including the Discovery Channel), Magnolia Pictures, Brentwood Home Video, Ryko, Koch/Goldhil Entertainment, Medusa Home Entertainment, Studio Canal, Universum Films, Kinowelt Home Entertainment, DVD International, Opus Arte, MK2, Momentum Pictures, Twister Home Video, EMI, Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group, Wicked Pictures, Pink Visual, Bang Bros, Digital Playground Inc., ClubJenna Inc., Bandai Visual Co.

Other manufacturer support includes:

Alpine, Broadcom Corporation, Canon, Onkyo, Fuji, Fujitsu, Funai Ricoh, Hitachi, Maxell, Imation, Teac, Kenwood, Konica Minolta, Ulead Systems, Mitsubishi, Verbatim, CyberLink Corp, Dolby Laboratories, Toei, Toho.

These are just a few of those not lited in your sig. And Blu-ray likewise has a long list to add. The point being both sides have considerable support. Enough to say that support alone does not tip an advantage either way.

Yes, I do know that. However, you may not know that most of the ones you listed are infact part of another studio, which I could also quite easily do on BDs side. ie, Nickelodeon, MTV are all affiliates of Paramount.

The fact is, BD clearly has more studio and harware support, even the most die hard HD-DVD fans recognise that.

actually you did do that and in fact you make it seem some are independent of others when they are not (ie Fox bought MGM).

The point I am making is that both sides have considerable support, enough to guarantee both remain for a while.

Will you please stop putting words in other people mouths.
