What's The Best Red Wine You Ever Had?

Featured Replies

For those of you who were interested in DSOTM, you should visit Claymore Wines web site:

http://www.claymorewines.com.au/

Check out the names of the various wines on offer..............this bloke should be on PA.

Obviously loves wines, music and a sense of humour to boot.

Wow 'You'll Never Walk Alone' wine. Ahh! Gerry and the Pacemakers, One of my favourites; that could almost get me interested.

Had a bott of Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir 04 last night - no not the greatest wine ever but damn it was easy drinking. So light yet still 14%. Even when I spilled a few drops on the white tablecloth it really did not stain like a red. Worth it at $37 at Dans if you want a smooth yet young wine

I like easy drinking wines. Can go through the bottles easier that way :):)

Cloudy Bay make some nice wines, they are sort of the sibling of Cape Mentelle in WA. Very nice.

davidass are you of french decendents?

The french really seem like both cloudy bay and cape mentelle.

I'm more of a Howard Park shiraz....certain years of Capa Vale cabernet...Leewin estate 1984 ART series cab is sublime so are late their 90's rieslings.

Lot's of things from the Mt Barker region.

I bought a few cases of Leo Buring Watervale Riesling [latest vintage]...untasted before purchase....usally "THE best....yeh,well that's going on EBAY...one to avoid...very disappointed.

I have managed to locate a case of the '03 DSOTM. It should be shipped tomorrow..................YUM.

I will keep it aside for GTG's and special occasions.

No French blood here but some of their wines are spectacular (the price sometimes matches too). Cape Mentelle is a winery I have been a fan of for years, and on their mailing list although finances mean I can't always buy any. Have you tried their Zinfandel, it is fantastic.

Coincidentally, I opened a 1983 and 1988 Cape Mentelle between Christmas and new year. The 88 was the stand out.

I left my last bottle of Cape Mentelle Zinfandel at Norpus'. Norpus? Did you get to open it?

If you think the Cape Mentelle Zin is good, wait till you try the Peel Estate Zinfandel. Peel Estate is a very small winery in Mandurah, WA - about 80km south of Perth, or 1/3 of the way to Margaret River. Their wines are only "just" available in WA bottleshops, but not always. Their Zinfandel is rarely available in Perth bottleshops, and the only reliable way to get yourself a supply is at the cellar door or by mail order.

The Peel Estate Zin is a BIG wine. When I took my first sip, the strong tannins puckered up my cheeks followed immediately by a burst of dark chocolate and intense berries. Somehow through all the stern wine you can discern a bit of sweetness. They say that other wines are long? Well this wine is so long that you can still feel it the next day.

The one I drank was a 2002 bottle consumed in 2005, so it was still very young and probably too much of a good thing. It's worth a try, just for the amusement :) $50/bottle.

I was given a bottle of wine by a visitor on Xmas day.

It's a Leasingham, Magnus, Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2002. Is it any good? It's not opened and I don't drink wine.

Also has anyone heard of SevenHills wine in the Clare Valley? My nephew is a yard foreman there.

Don't know about the Leasingham, but I tried quite a few of the Sevenhills wines back in the 90's.

I've still got a couple tucked away.

They made some really nice wines then, and I assume they still make good wines.

Best red I've had = first red/cabsav = Wolf Blass Black Label cabsav back in the mid 80s.

Fell in love with robust cabsavs then, too many to choose from but mainly from the Hunter region.

However, never liked the Penfold offerings.. haven't tried the Grange tho', not really interested.

Then we had a few years of smooth merlots.. mmm.

Never got into the shiraz.

Now, I'm trying out the new breeds.. sangiovese in particular.

Love the Mudgee region.

I currently live in Melbourne and trying to get used to this region's reds.

Need to try more of Yarra Yerring's offerings. Nothing else seems to stand out here.

Not into whites but really love the Dead Man's Hill gewurz.

cheers

Leasingham Magnus $19.99 4 Stars & Top 40

"Smokey, barrel-ferment characters on the nose. Excellent depth of ripe berry fruit flavours with lots of powerful toasty oak… A wine with balance and grace, was how one judge described this wine... Nice integration of young oak and fruit. Warm alcohol gives overall balance"

Sounds reasonable Grumpy

I don't think so unless Mrs Norpus has nailed it on the quiet (quite likely)
