Well after a few years and a few more $$$ fired this baby up yesterday. Certainly put a big smile on my face. Still a little bit of work to go but as some of the remaining required parts are almost unobtanium now, I wanted to be sure it runs and handles nicely before committing too much more. Bought new in Dec 1985 to compete in the 1986 A4DE. Raced constantly till the end of 1998. This machine allowed me to continue competing during those babies/mortgages/absolutely no money days. It kept me as sane as I can be. I owe it a lot.

Cool bike, that would qualify for vintage Enduro racing now?

I was a member of the Ariel MC in SA back in the 80's and early 90's and raced Enduro, Pony Express and Motocross for many years with the club. Great memories and was a terrific club to be part of.

I mainly raced KDX200's and some converted 250cc Motocross bikes for Enduro, but had the most fun racing KDX's.

Qualifies in some states. Sadly there are no Vinduro events in SA, Vic is one of the states that will not allow it. Bike has to be pre'85. Qld & NSW do run pre'90 classes. If you rode during those years with Ariel we would have most likely crossed paths at some stage. I am in the Juventus club and raced constantly in SA from 1984 through to the end of 2012. Mainly enduros, reliability trials and pony expresses but quite a few club motocrosses and short circuit days as well.

If I got a good run off the last turn and, lay rubber out to the wall tuck in, barp barp barp and hit maybe 180 (guessing, couldn’t look) past the control tower then down one gear and on its ear towards the apex at turn one, now that that big t1 dip seems to be gone. Big breath into turn 2 and wind it out onto the straight, 240km/h before the 200m marker on the back straight, hit the brakes and down two gears at 100m. Ground the big girl out through t3, wind out one gear and back on the picks and join 4 and 5 into one arc, wind the one gear out again to the final turn, early apex and out to the wall and repeat. ïŠ

Will go straight into the fast group next time, it’s better being overtaken occasionally than being held up, and the group is smaller. Was happy with 1m25sec laps. Ten seconds or so off the ASBK times is good for the big girl.

Tyres handled it great, Dunny Sportsmart 2’s. Even with the plug from a previous puncture, chortle.

Great lid, wont go back to tinted visors again with the little flip down shades. :)

Gets dark, wet, iffy, just flip it up and hey presto, vision! handy at $2:00.....your honour.....

Good ventilation, washable, whats not to love??

I always flinch taking the visor off though, it sounds breakable.

I took one of the cousins for a test ride today - F700 GS, looking for something with a little bit of dirt road capability. Very tempting, I still need to try out a G650 GS too, but I think it might be a bit buzzy and underpowered. There was a K1200R on the dealers floor used (and cheaper than the new F700), but I don't think I can be trusted on a big bore nowadays. The red mist inevitably descends even on a planned 'sedate' ride...

PS - Darren69, that ain't your first track outing, probably C Grader if not B at some stage?

Hmmm

Began in 1980 with a GSX 250 - moderately horrible.

Then an XV 750 (ditto) and babysat an XS 1100.

Then an Xl 175

Then babysat some R650s.

Then found an unloved CB 550F in a shed. Put on some tyres, did the brake master cylinder, adjusted the cam chain and thrashed it to death.

Except it wouldn't die so I sold it - it was obviously evil ;-).

Been bikeless for yonks but a neighbour has an R800, another one has a Ducati something (immediately averted eyes to avoid death by drool-drowning), another has ape-hangers with a Hogley-Dogley suspended underneath.

Now another neighbour has brought home a 1972 V7 Guzzi - the rotter. Why dost they taunt me so ????

Therefore I will unreluctantly accept the gift of a V-Strom from some kind but lunatic benefactor. (the one-litre version of course)

edit - forgot the postie bike for prospecting and the Fantic Chopper (the big-block tyre-shredding 150 version not the lowly 50cc moped) which I bought to resell.

I rode a GSX 250 once. An angry budgie on amphetamines is somewhat more powerful.

Oh I don't know about that.

It could be revved to over ten billion rpm (being 4-valve and twin-swirl and trans-fat), and could surge to over 100 kays per hour in less than 70 or 80 seconds.

Ready for a full weekend at the GP !

The old faithful has seen the ride 11 times, had the thing for 14 years since new.

That's my second track day and first proper one, my first one involved going straight into the fast group (07 ish, I think) on a Bridgestone 003 shod TL1000S, taking four laps to close in on the tail of an R6 into t4-5 and then grounding it out too much and losing it, haha. Four laps, a totalled TL Suzook and a ride of shame back to the pits in the trailer, one can hardly call that a track day. :D

All good, it made me approach this one a lot differently, haha, a few more (less??) grey hairs too.

Never raced DRC, just a lot of fast road riding since I got my licence at 18(?). Have been very lucky, learnt off some fast guys and have only had one big road crash. Spend my time these days chasing an ex ASBK Blade and a Panigale around the place (Panigale got sold recently). The road racers are my idols (McGuiness/Donald/Martin et al).

Had an excellent ride today actually, my place-Nymboida-Tyringham-into Dorrigo via Bostobrick, down the Waterfall Way for fuel at Thora and then backtrack via Dorrigo for lunch and drop in to see the daughter and grand kids near Coutts Crossing on the way home, al under a massive blue winter sky. Always interesting, some days you are just in the zone and everything is sliding and you are absolutely flying and everything is calm and lovely and you miss every pothole and bit of gravel and cow sh^& everything works beautifully, tyres balled up and knee sliders and pegs all lighter.

Other days, all you see is crazy lane-wandering drivers, roos and Armco. Just all depends on the headspace. Gotta respect the headspace.

Some slippery corners out at Nymboida, methinks the 'drifter' w@#kers get out there in their rice burners and put diesel etc on the road to let them get sideways.

I still love my bike. Best I've ever had. :)

@@DRC the first bike I ever rode on the road was a GSX 250!! No licence and fumbling around, haha. Maybe 1986??

Bikeless at the moment but just love a v- twin although i did once own an R1 but never did learn to love it. Ducati's are my first love but a Guzzi could be my next bike....one power ball!

I taught myself to ride on a GSX250 which at the time required another biker to accompany you.

One day (illegally) riding alone I did a wobbly U-turn and was spotted by a plodmobile which turned to chase me (probably thought I was drunk which I wasn't but not unusual in that town). So I turned into a sidestreet and spotted a house which a mate used to rent - and which I knew had a good hiding spot around the back. The inhabitants came outside upon hearing the noise and oh joy, they were riders too and quickly got with the program and told plod that they knew nothing, nothing at all.  Yet another in a long series of luck escapes.

Maybe there's a thread there - when bike insanity didn't go bad ......

Only recently got into road riding and bought myself one of these

2011 CB400SF in limited edition tri-colour.

An outstanding bike and the VTEC above 6500rpm it sounds like an absolute banshee

 Hey @@Darren69

Now I have seen your head in a photo (SNA) lips stuck on a bottle, I will keep my eye out at the GP this year. Will be in my normal spot about half way down the camp site below the go cart track. Have a feeling my dear old Dad will be coming along also on his KLR650

Cheers

So good these days with the big screens. You don't miss anything.

Deliberately.

Missed one thing @@Darren69, that the TV doesn't do, the raw noise of the big bikes. They cackle

.

Would like to actually try and capture some sounds at the track in hi res. Can get good results fairly cheaply these days.

Cheers  :)

Sorry Matt, I meant the trackside big screens. yes, love the noise and smell though the 990's will always be my favourite.

Rarrrboom!Raarrrrboom!! Big fuel dumps at each gear change. ;)
