Panasonic to Move Technics Hi-Fi Production as Malaysian Factory Closes

Panasonic is preparing another significant change to its consumer AV manufacturing footprint, confirming that production of Technics-branded hi-fi products will leave its Malaysian PAVCKM factory by the end of February 2027.

The move looks to be part of a broader reorganisation that will ultimately see Panasonic AVC Networks, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (PAVCKM) cease operations, affecting approximately 400 employees by the end of March 2027. TV production at the facility will cease, while Blu-ray Disc player manufacturing will transfer to China Hualu Panasonic AVC Networks Co., Ltd. (CHPAVC) in China by the end of September 2026.

Technics production will take a different track, with the company stating that manufacturing of its Technics-branded hi-fi products will transfer to another company within the Panasonic Group, although it has not identified the destination or detailed which models are involved. That makes the announcement particularly significant for Technics, with Malaysia having become an important manufacturing base for the Japanese audio brand.

Panasonic shifted production of several Technics turntables from Japan to Malaysia in 2021, with models including the SL-1200G, SL-1200GR/SL-1210GR, SP-10R and flagship SL-1000R among those reported to have made the move. The Malaysian operation was already producing other Technics products spanning turntables, digital players and amplifiers. The decision therefore represents more than a routine factory consolidation, even if Panasonic is presenting it primarily as a measure to improve competitiveness and optimise its manufacturing footprint.

It's important to note that there is currently no indication that Panasonic is scaling back Technics itself. Production is being transferred rather than discontinued, and the brand continues to develop and sell products across turntables, amplification, network audio and wireless categories.

The announcement also adds another chapter to Panasonic's wider restructuring of its consumer AV operations. As StereoNET reported earlier this year, Panasonic has already reshaped parts of its global television business, including an agreement that puts Skyworth in charge of sales, marketing and logistics for Panasonic TVs in Europe. Panasonic has retained responsibility for AV standards and continues to collaborate on the development of flagship OLED models.

That followed Panasonic's withdrawal from television sales in New Zealand and came ahead of its Entertainment Division being reintegrated into Panasonic Corporation from April 2026. At the time, we described Panasonic's changing consumer AV strategy as less a withdrawal from the market than a recalibration of how and where it competes. The closure of PAVCKM suggests that the process is now extending further into the manufacturing operations behind its AV products.

Panasonic says the changes are intended to “strengthen the competitiveness” of its AVC business and improve manufacturing efficiency in Malaysia. The country nevertheless remains an important regional base for the wider Panasonic Group, which employs approximately 12,000 people there across manufacturing, research and development and corporate operations. Panasonic also says it will continue manufacturing audio products in Malaysia, despite Technics-branded hi-fi production moving elsewhere.

For the approximately 400 employees affected by the PAVCKM closure, the transition is expected to be completed by the end of March 2027. Panasonic says it is working with Malaysian authorities, government agencies and the Electrical Industry Workers' Union to provide job-placement and career-transition assistance.
