Vintage Yamaha System

Featured Replies

I think you have to look at the history and equate it to that. Japanese speakers and hifi have a sound and so do the vinyl pressings. When you talking about the NS-1000 and above then you will have to dig deep to find a better bang for buck speaker. You'll find that the speaker suits the music. Yamaha did try to make a speaker the break into the "European" sound. It was designed by Wharfedale and built by Yamaha in a no expenses spared trial and resulted in the cloth domed NS-1200 classic. The Japanese hated them...... Do I thrash Nirvana or Eminem or LZ through mine? No. That's why I bought the Focals. But if detail and speed from the mids is what you are after for vocal or piano etc. then the money for NS-1000 is warranted and then some. YMMV

Since my last post i have spent a fair bit of time and money. I spend a lot of time measuring and treating the room. Still not happy and endlessly locked down in Victoria, i decided to try and  go as

I've been doing some listening since i got this gear...and...while there is many systems nicer than mine. Mine gives me this huge grin, this huge sense of satisfaction. I grew up on my old man's 1972

It is warranted easy because the resale value is excellent :P better than most modern speakers!

That can be the case Pete but I never said "vintage" gear collection is a budget pursuit haha

All this talk of speakers...did you sell your other pair of 1000s ? :)

No mate always keeping one pair for special occasions. I'm gonna do some internal wiring this week and try some mods just for fun.

Sorry i meant, i knew you had 2 pairs. 1 is sold i'm guessing.

Oh yep sold on here a month or so ago. Too Bloody cheap too I might add (sold for $2250, was offered $2800). I sold the mint pair so that I have my refurb pair are still here and I don't have to worry so much about the Mrs and kids bashing them up. And also allows me to mod them etc.

Not that i would actually do this, but, what if, i bought some banged up NS1000m, moved the Mid and the crossover into my NS500M and then i would have something resembling NS1000X?

Not sure if it's a direct fit? There was a set of mids and tweeters and crossovers that went on eBay recently for $700. So it's possible. You have great speakers. I guess it's a matter of testing some 1000's to see if you like them. Not everybody does and that's cool. I mean they were designed for studios so they give away everything and that may not be to everyone's liking.

I’ll transfer records to under cabinet once I have the back on and finished cabling and shifting it.

Big Rock n Roll posted for the wall to follow…any tips?

For now…its very satisfying to sit in front of…looks twice as big in person!

Sorry bit dark. Just point n shoot with my iphone...

Your vintage Yamaha setup is coming along really well

That cabinet is sweet! Not to mention the NS-1000XW :thumb:

Are you going to add a tuner & cd player at some point?

Out of curiosity why two CA-1000? recapped vs original perhaps?

  • Author

No i dont think i'll add tuner - maybe CD - maybe not :) I just use records or my laptop.

I bought the second one thinking i would recap one and then compare, but i like them sitting next to each. With super hot class A, i run one for a while and then the other.

I'll swap the 690 position with the 1000XW this week...i'm not happy with them as is. Bit of reflection from the wall i think.

I'm actually ready to try a new amp, maybe something modern for a comparo.

Hi JPete,

How is your Vintage Yamaha system going? Any new additions lately?

Cheers,

Willmax

Yeah.

Last year i sold one of my CA1000s and bought a new Weston Topaz with EL34 (6CA7).

Had a custom perspex lid made and the MS22 is off getting LexBoxed as we speak.

Made some speaker cable (no sonic difference, just wanted to ensure no interference and make them look nice).

Added an iFY iDSD DAC and some software like Bit Perfect.

No recent photos, here's some older ones.

So now i have two primary sources. The Full Analogue, Valve Phono, Valve Amp and a Full Digital, Computer, DAC, Solid State. But what i tend to do is use the computer and DAC into the Valve amp. Its absolutely sublime. Valves and Ultra revealing NS1000xw seem to be a perfect patch.

I am starting to play records a little more, my daughter is showing an interest in them too.

I am on the hunt for a suitable retro lounge for this room and i have starting planning the next phase of records on walls/rock n roll posters. I already added an ultra warm light bulb and i'm on the look out for a vintage flokati and this room will be a little like a retro time machine :)

What about you? @Willmax

Nice set-up and l see you have a giant slayer - the PF800. I'm using mine again while my Garrard is being fiddled with and with the Shure V15 - 4 cart on the YAM it is really amazing and very enjoyable to use: wish l could use both TTs

@Grumpy I wanted that turntable back in the 80’s-90’s.

I had a barn find Garrard 301 but that 50s looks doesnt work for me. I luuuuurv the 401 :) Have you got pics of yours somewhere? I wont be getting one unless i come across another barn find. (or you sell me yours cheap!)

I really like the PF800. Running a DL110 - it just works so nice...many of those records i kept from my childhood sound like crap on it now :)

Hey Grumps, you still have your PF-800 too.

Still have mine and find it difficult to let go of, every now and then I still give it a spin and wonder why I would pay more to upgrade it.

Hi Joz ,  my 800 has a custom made stainless bearing shaft housig and bearing and sounds so good with the Shure cart that l am not missing the Garrard too much, although l think the YAM just has a bit less detail -  loving the fun easy way the YAM works though.

Can you guys list experiences with carts on this TT. Not a lot of really good info around.

I wish I could, I just run the standard cart.

The only thing I have changed since I have owned it was a stylus.

Dunno, it just works.

I have tried these

AT95E  - it's been awhile, but memory tells me it was just ok.

SHURE M97xE - a very smooth  and deep sound with a comfortable top end which lacks a little detail but promotes longer listening.

SHURE V15 type 4 with jico HE stylus - a detailed, crisp top end with a revealing mid to low mid sounds and tight deep bass. ( my favourite on the YAM and on the Garrard )
