Well...where to begin.....

Probably at the beginning....

Growing up, my parents weren't "in to music"

Not at all.

Growing up in the sticks in Sweden, didn't help with discovering music either.

You either listened to the radio, saw someting on TV or borrowed vinyl and copied it on to cassette (if you had the technology) or if you were lucky - got to go to the whitegoods store 25K away, which sold records and tapes......

Aaanyway, back on topic.

One of the tapes my dad owned, and I copied and played to death was this

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greatest_Hits,_Vol._1_(Rod_Stewart_album)

Yeh.

Good old cheesy Rod at his rockin best.

Play me any track off that album and my eyes will glaze over and I'll be somewhere else.

Yes yes yes yes I know, that's not the original Rod people came to love.

Rod the mod and all that.

(Later on I discovered the "Older Rod" and appreciate that stuff very much as well, I hasten to add)

But this album, to me, is just so special.

It's THAT album.

The one I had as a kid and would isten to over and over and over again, sing along to (even though I didn't speak a word of English) and create images and stories and landscapes in my head.

I still rate "The killing of Georgie" as one of the best story telling tunes of all time.

I can see it every time I hear it.

The Greyhound bus, the leather kid with a switchblade knife, poor Georgie just wanting to find love and happiness......

...and being accepted...

"How can my son not be straight after all I've said and done for him...?"

:(

As well as "Maggie May" and "Do ya think I'm sexy"

They always put a smile on my face.

Especially as I at first didn't understand the lyrics, but as time went on and I learnt English, everything became clear and made sense

I'll always love Rod Stewart and while I'm not sold on his "Songbook" stuff, his voice is comforting and "home" to me

Any Rod fans out there?

I think he's a great example of an artist moving with the times.

Did a bit of this and a bit of that and always kept it fresh.

He's also one of those artists where I don't care who wrote what he sings.

He makes it his own and always does a good job at it.

All of the above - IMO of course.

Rod was great...............until he sold out.
It was almost all downhill (music wise) once he shafted The Faces.
Rod is just like Malcolm Turnbull in that respect.

i caught Ronnie Woods plectrum when he chucked it off stage when Rod Stewart toured with the Faces in Sydney ... a long long time ago, in a galaxy far away

The first few Rod albums are almost Faces albums under a different guise, although the material was chheesier (the Faces did cheese too) (Rod did his Ive got a sexy bum thing with the Faces too)

Five guys walk into a bar is brilliant.

Anyway, back to your question dvp, yes Rod fans exist. What needs to be recognized is that, while Rod fans are actually quite common, the Rod fan who likes everything he's ever done, without hesitation or reservation, is a rare beast indeed.

As an example, his song about deflowering a teenage virgin just sounds wrong nowadays.

BTW I have the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver album. Rod's cover version doesn't add much to the arrangement but my goodness, that voice! It deservedly made the song a hit.

he was into MILF's back then

Miss Judy, she was moody

Owned a sweaty farm in old Alabam'

I was just eighteen, crude and mean

All I needed was to get my own way.

I like Rod Stewart but I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan. However I did go see him last time he was in Australia at one of those 'Day on the green' events at a Hunter Valley winery. He was old enough to qualify for the old age pension and his voice wasn't what it used to be but he's a fantastic entertainer. He's got a huge array of well known songs to chose from, amazing energy and plenty of amusing anecdotes to tell. He's well worth seeing live if you ever get the chance.

The one album I own with
R. Stewart  singing on it.

Bah!

He was into anything he could get his hands on!

This was the best he EVER got.

i went off Roddy when he went sailin'

Faces were good though

what was the question?

I bought this album when it came out and thrashed it to death, I have since over the years bought the CD and another album of 'A Nod' ( to replace the almost unplayable original LP.) - one of my all time favourites still to this day

First I took notice of Rod was the ads in the New Musical Express by the Vertigo label for "An Old Raincoat Never Lets you Down" and then listening to him on a BBC programme broadcast out of Singapore. I really liked early albums like "Never A Dull Moment" with its unique blend of folksy rocky and bluesy tunes. I had this on a cassette tape, then picked up a nice LP many years later. Then came "Atlantic Crossing" which was down a notch or two, in my view, although still very enjoyable, but didn't possess the same down-home quality of NADM. I do like his work with Faces on "A Nod's As Good As A Wink" too, which I had on tape and LP too. Must say I prefer the early Rod ! cheers

I loved the early Rod stuff when I was a lad and still do. It's amazing how he has changed over the years, and whilst now not my cup of tea he certainly is pleasing a lot of punters out there. If people are enjoying what he does now then great that Rod is still entertaining them.

I loved An Old Raincoat ... and Gasoline Alley in particular.

And just to make an Australian connection I have a copy of Python Lee Jackson's single, In A Broken Dream, which Rod does the vocals on. Might play it at my upcoming gtg.

Well..he's still rockin'

I don't think he would have had such a long and successful career had he not changed, gone in a different direction, sold out or what one would call it.

:)
