I spent a year in total (over 4 x 3 month tours) in Penang, Malaysia in the 80's and 90's with the Army, while deployed to Butterworth Air Force Base.

Loved eating "off the street" with the various market stalls everywhere. Can't remember the names of the restaurants that I use to eat at while there, but certainly loved Malaysian cuisine.

Yep, that's still all here

Night markets at gurney at Georgetown

We are staying at Bantu ferrenghi where a lot of the hotels are

More night markets

It's a nice place

YUM, whenever I'm in Singapore I always make a point to cross the boarder for some culinary delights. Personally my fav is all the awesome Peranakan style (Chinese & Malay fusion which is typically spicy)

....I'm so hungry now!

I've stayed in Batu Ferringhi. My wife and I ate at the Long Beach Cafe a lot. Check it out if you haven't already. Smack bang right in the middle of the night markets.

That's CMY with branches in KL too. They have drawers full of used LPs. Another outlet is Artists Gallery. And Penang food is the best!

Wow I missed this thread. Count me in as a major fan of food in Malaysia. Penang is a culinary stand out but I've not visited the east coast where I imagine there is less Chinese influence. Otak Otak was a one of my fave snacks and some of the best yum cha i had was in Penang from a humble looking open restaurant on Jalan Kimberley.

Lunch

Fried egg and rice. Is there a more perfect combination? It's hard to imagine.
