My Next Horns

Funny to see a picture of my shop posted in a forum in Australia. These were built for a customer and they can be seen installed in my avatar photo.

Here's a new set, just assembled to play and shake down a week ago before getting the final finish work done.

Superb work Eric. I could look into your horns for hours. They remind me of Morning Glory flowers

Can you throw us any more technical or performance related aspects that would not jepodise intellectual property? Cogent fc drivers and conical horns are well admired...

It's been both a privledge and a challenge getting the Cogent system this far. My role here has been that of Industrial designer and fabricator for the woodworking and the rack and hardware for the main arrays. I've known Both Rich Drysdale and Steve Schell of Cogent for over a decade now and Rich even credits me with a bit of industrial design input on the drivers themselves.

The Cogent drivers are works of industrial art in my eyes, not unlike a modern F1 car, and so I thought they should be prominently displayed in a system. The new system we're just completing has fully matched sequential veneers on all parts for a really nice cinsistency throught all of the parts.

The main Arrays have a sensitivity of 112-115db 1w/1m from ~90-45k Hz depending on the final voicing at set up. The midrange driver has a sensitivity of 118db, but it gets padded a bit to balance with the midbass and tweeter.

To comment on a question above about Conical horns, the midrange horn here has an included angle about 2 degrees greater than the internal angle of the driver phase plug. This means the horn does not constrict the radiation of the driver and acts to reinforce the driver's designed radiation pattern. The result is a very relaxed, open and uncolored presentation.

Both Steve and I have some significant experience with large bass horns, but in this set up we went a different direction with a 21" direct radiator in a large sealed enclosure. While not quite as tonally sweet as a large bass horn, it allows for complete time alignment without correction and so is really more fully integrated with better coherence. The woofers run on separate amps, and we are still searching for the best amp and curves.

We're working on building a little inventory and getting to a couple of shows this year. Since just about every part is made by the three of us there is currently a significant lead time and they are expensive, but it is a really special system.

LOL no chance mate. I'm actually hoping in 10 years time I'll be well and truly out of this so called 'hobby' (more like obsession!) and be focused into something more family orientated. That's assuming things go according to plan...

May even end up back to a small music room with a nice pair of ML-1s :)

@tuyen, just came across this post while looking through 50 odd pages of Lovetube's (RIP). it's now a decade..... where have you ended up with your system?

Hi @Tax, even though been bouncing in and out of the hifi hobby over the years, still a horn tragic.   Goto unit horns are long gone (I had to sell them to try some Western electric gear). Which ended up eventually moving on too. I do at times reminisce and miss the 4way goto unit setup…

currently still have a collection of horn gear.  One recent design I been running is a prototype A for Ara FS2  active setup. 2-way Unity/synergy on top, sealed bass below.

RIP Duc!

Big horns in small rooms work. Don’t sound like ‘horns’, Just sounds ‘real’. Effortless presentation.  Full engaging presentation at low volumes.   Bass horns play a bit part in this.   Enjoy the video!

Would love to have a look one day Volker ✌️

The Horn Express has arrived from Margaret River.

Probably whistling along the journey to Perth as a Roo Shoo....

Tuyens new playmates have landed, a large pair of 160hz Azura Horns.

Sure will be interning once commissioned and can’t wait to hear them.

Yo Sergio, let me know if you sort something out, I wouldn’t mind popping in as well if that’s ok Volker?

How are the foam panels, did they work ok?

I heard Sakuma concert in Tokyo, it was very musical, engaging but dark, fidelity was low but the emotion and music was there, he only played classical music.

BTW I just bought this compendium of Sakuma articles from MJ Audio.

You can use worldshopping.com to buy and ship for you, they charge about $30 for the service plus then international shipping.

I spent over 10 years getting my horn system to sound good, be prepared, it takes effort to find and build right crossovers and time and phase align speakers, multi amping and so on.

here some info on my horn system.

Dr Bruce Edgar horns, in the end I settled with Azura with AER drivers.

now listing to clone LS3/5A with Shindo amp and don’t miss horns in a small room, near field is close.

still nothing beats good horn system.

Hi Mate, acoustic panels have worked out great in treating first reflection areas etc., very effective handy stuff.

A bit slower on the DIY front atm , puppy time and training in full swing...

Yeah will get you over too shortly and give Lizzie a cuddle for me.

Thank you for posting this.

Up on YouTube for only a couple of days, and already it has around 2,700 views.

Only watched the first 6 or so minutes, but saw enough to have led me to make a plan to watch the whole video tomorrow.

Thank you!

You guys are both in Perth.

Have you heard each others systems?

Yeah,  we are only a dozen streets away from each other. I look forward to checking Tuyen’s new rig out very soon , it’s great having someone on the same route of sonic bliss.

Fascinating to think that only a few weeks ago it looked nothing remotely  like it does now , bare walls with a totally different horn setup.
Recently briefly heard the Bass Scoops and less than the current horns in a upright layout , sounded rather wholesome and smoothly integrated.
