As you know l am only starting down this road myself. l have read just about every site on horns that relates to TAD. Rey Audio is highly regarded, but apparently the Japanese taste is to drive the compressors xover point as low as possible since they value midrange clarity over bass punch, dunno if that explains what you heard.

GOTO is very highly regarded but l have read of a few users who ditched them and went back to JBL or TAD drivers as they found some idiosyncrasy's with their sound that long term they couldn't tame nor live with. All second hand info but so take it all with a dose of skepticism but food for thought all the same.

What about some Cessaro horns, they gain universal praise amongst the horn heads.

Goto and YL are 2 famous horn compression driver designers who worked closely with Kondo san many years ago. Audionote Japan still have the horns in their showroom. It is very hard to get the YL but Goto are still available. I am just wondering how Kondo amps will sound with these horns.

My prime goal is to get my system to sound as lively and free as possible.

I have read about Cessaro horns from Germany but not heard them myself. Where do you read about the universal praises?

I've been finishing up my sims for a TH similar to the DTS20. I have 4 spare drivers that will work in it....

The SH50 is the latest version of the Unity series.

Jean Hiraga uses in his horn setup all Onken compression drivers. These are not skyrocket expensive, and perform at highest level , like Ale, YL, Goto, et al...

if you do not want to get into wood work to build horns, there is stereo lab in germany, these make high quality tractrix horns, even with 96cm diameter, for midbass duty :

And Jack I dont think we have that many Australian manufacurers of horn speakers - yiu might as well at least try out the latetest from SA - I'm looking forward to hearing these one day soon!!!!!

The kx-5926 is one of a family of new generation 3 way systems which are designed for the Cinema complex of the 21st Century, offering a significant improvement in audio quality compared to the best 2 way designs. To put this in broad technical terms, it is a requirement for these systems to perform best with stadium seating, whilst maintaining a shallow profile on the complete assembly so that wasted space behind the screen is minimised.

To achieve a lower distortion figure and flatter frequency response in the mid and high frequencies, the correct loading and pattern control had to be engineered. Using new sophisticated loudspeaker modeling techniques, along with experience gained from a long and succesful association with the cinema industry, Krix has gained the reputation as an innovator. The Krix new generation 3 way designs are the correct solution for this type of advanced speaker system.

This complete system can also be specified with a bi-amped passive filter network between the midrange and high frequency and should a passive filter be required the model number to be specified is a kx-5926B. The passive filter network will be factory fitted within the midrange enclosure.

The kx-5986 is one of a family of ultra high end, state of the art, new generation 4 way loudspeakers for Cinemas of the 21st Century. Advantages of adding an Ultra High Frequency element to our existing 3 way designs are, extended and flatter frequency response from 7.5kHz to 20kHz and at the same time significantly reducing distortion. As well as being a significant improvement in audio quality with even smoother and sweeter highs, the UHF element has an added advantage of improving pattern control beyond 10kHz, which in 2 and 3 way designs can become erratic.

The right directivity pattern is critical to ensure every seat is a good seat and the kx-5986 ensures significant improvements so that there is less variation with frequency than ever before. True horn loading of acoustic transducers is essential for pattern control, and a major step forward has been the development of a new throat configuration that assisted in improved pattern control and improved frequency response and reduced distortion.

Great care has been taken in the design and manufacture of the passive filter network, an important component, which is often overlooked because it is not visible. The filter network is responsible for the integration of the whole array and has many tasks such as providing the correct crossover points with the appropriate phase responses for each section, high order slopes for minimal vertical off axis disturbance and to equalise the whole array for simplified auditorium equalisation.

This complete system can also be specified with a tri-amped or bi-amped passive filter network between the midrange and high frequency or midrange, high frequency and ultra high frequency. Should a passive filter be required the model number to be specified is a kx-5986T or kx-5986B respectively. The passive filter network will be factory fitted within the midrange enclosure.
