I was off the grog for five years as I had to be. I enjoy drinking though and in my line of work it's hard not to. I'm also trying to break through the 90kg barrier but going the other way. Need to lift heavier weights. Sugar is the real killer, especially in processed foods so I avoid them. Also desserts, which is a pity as I like desserts. A high protein, low carb and green vegie diet isn't that bad is it :(

Hello everyone, happy New Year. :party

Christmas day marked 19 months off the grog for me. It has absolutely flown by. On the odd occasion lately I feel like one, but not very often.

Life has been a bit of a roller coaster otherwise. Things go from happy families to sleeping on the couch in the space of a week. Some weeks are full of love and happiness, some I wonder why I bother. :(

Work has been crazy. Lots of hours. It's what I wanted and what I've been trying to get back into but I forgot how much it takes out of you. I really have to work on not letting it affect my life after hours. I Am the leading hand/ pretty much running the job, at the New Children's Hospital in Perth doing the reconstruction of the panels that contained asbestos. Roof of the eighth floor, trafficable glass on the atrium. Have finished that now, but now looking after the replacement of up to 2000 defective facade panels that the state have rejected. Mostly rope access works, ewps, cranes, davit arms etc

Exciting times. :) I forgot that dealing with 20-30 construction workers is like dealing with preschool kids.

Have completed the Sydney marathon back in September, got a pb but could have gone a lot quicker with a bit more disciplined training. But have put all the weight I lost back on. Back to about 94 kgs. God damn sweet tooth.

All the best everyone.

cheers Dave.

It's very interesting reading old posts of your own, I went back and read the first one from nearly two years back and I don't feel like that now. It's all a time and place thing no doubt, as is most of life.

I am in a good place, everything is going OK, have a loving partner and we have been living together for 12 months, all the family is healthy and happy, from parents through to grand kids, am heading towards my 48th birthday.

I still try for my three walks a week, it is still the 7.5km circuit, I don't run much of it now, as I was getting sore knees (which I never had until running, not even through my 22 year civil construction career) but I don't sweat it if life gets in the way. My cholesterol levels have stayed good since I started more cardio instead of weights.

My partner is a gorgeous Nigella type foody who wouldn't care if I was 150kg so that doesn't help. But it's nice. My place makes a lot of nice smells nowadays, as compared to before the 'move in' happened, haha. I also now have stylish pillows and better wine glasses here as well along with regular floral arrangements.

The pillows still get chucked on the floor, a man has to keep boundaries.

Can still bang out a respectable amount of wide grip overhand chin ups but I might be a bit sore the next day. :D

But, I came to the conclusion of- I can enjoy now and die or be very strict with myself and die. I have had a few fitness fanatic friends pass recently and to be honest, I don't envy their lives. Sure, they might have liked what they did but it did not ensure longevity.

So now, I'm going to grab a few Carlsberg's (made under strict supervision by Coopers, you know) and some Pistachios, put on some Killers and go out the front patio with my dear partner and the dog and talk and see if some more showers don't come over before the light fades.

Good work Daz great post mate. Life seems pretty sweet, happy days. :party

@Pops110  I am sure you are very thorough at your job and yes, managing humans is like being pecked to death by ducks. :D

Humans are by nature, arseholes. I like to keep contact time to a minimum. My missus nearly choked on her dinner the other day when a friend suggested I could work in retail.

Reminds me of the classic Bill Hicks bit...

There's a new party being born: The People Who Hate People Party. People who hate people, come together!  "No!"

We're kind of having trouble getting off the boards, you know. Come to our meeting!  "Are you gonna be there?" Yeah. "Then I ain't f*cking coming."

As of last night I am now off dairy and sugar as well a reduction in red meat consumption. I'm on a mission.

You'll fall away to nothing!!

Old man reckons he cant stomach red meat anymore, he hardly ever eats it, which was surprising to hear over Chrissy.

That's the plan! I did a 42 hour fast over the weekend as well. Really I am targeting a long, healthy life free of medication and with loose fitting trousers!

As many may know, I did the CSIRO diet last year for 12 weeks and lost 12 kilos almost to the gram. That finished around start of November if I'm not mistaken and despite 2 months of above avg alcohol consumption and a bit of binge eating with the silly season and 9 days camping, I've only put around 2.5kg's back on.

Still, about to a 2 week mad travel time with work and upon my return, going straight back on the CSIRO principles as I want to get back done to 86-ish, 94 currently. Will attempt to go of the grog again till my birthday in late March

Reading this thread has inspired me to action and have decided to go off the grog for February.  Not sure how it's going to go but will give it a crack and see how I feel after a month.

Getting off the grog is easy, i've done it hundreds of times.

Usually on monday mornings!:hiccup

Well I'm 12 days in and haven't died.

Last night was quite tough as was sitting down with the wife and really felt like a glass of red but held out.

Definitly feeling pretty good.

@POV WD, great effort there. Shortest month of the year too, I like that plan.

The biggest single improvement I usually get is quality of sleep. And significant weight loss.

Big effort mate, middle of summer and all!!

Oh that's a tad heartbreaking!

Any cardio exercise?

Getting into the bikky barrel to compensate for no beers?

  • 3 months later...

Morning all. Well today is a bit of milestone, 2 years to the day since I've had my last drink.

Time really has flown by, not sure where it's all gone really. Things have still been a bit of a roller coaster, lost my job about 3 weeks ago, along with everybody else in the company I work for, have hit PC on the hospital so has been a big shake up, not paying site allowances etc.

I'm off on holidays on Monday, will be heading to Spain, Morocco and Portugal. Happy days really looking forward to it, haven't been on a proper holiday for 5 plus years. This is what we board in Barcelona.

IMG_2039.thumb.JPG.3fd6a5700c2c21820434558c781326c8.JPG

Unfortunately the holiday is bad timing for my job, I would be back on working now but they couldn't take me back on because I will be away for nearly 4 weeks. Hopefully got a job when I get back.

Home life is great at the moment, but a few weeks ago wasn't so good, has still continued to be a roller coaster of ups and downs, sometimes more downs but we are slowly getting there, I hope this holiday helps things.

Nearly lost my father about 6 weeks ago, the dopey old bugger. He's morbidly obese with diabetes, he is on dialysis 3 times a week. But still doesn't look after himself, just thinks that it's normal to end up in hospital and the docs can fix him, even after his twin brother died of similar problems 18 months ago. There is no way I'm ever going to end up like that. My bloody sweet tooth makes it hard sometimes ;). But I have started back running fairly regularly again, got the Run for a Reason half marathon on this weekend, not ready for it but will push through it and finish, won't be breaking any records though.

Got the Sonique's in the house also, :love just really love them so happy that I was able to get them.IMG_1886.thumb.JPG.978f41b6dfd88c04279b480e1bf03725.JPG

I will be happy with these for many a year to come.

So all up a pretty mixed bag, but I'm so happy to have made 2 years off the grog. Thank you to everyone on here for their support and I hope everyone can meet their own goals and if anyone needs any help or advice or anything please don't hesitate to get in touch with me.

Cheers Dave :D

@Pops110 that is an amazing effort/story and your holiday looks incredible.

Am jealous of your willpower, the OP obviously does not have any. :D

I hope your holiday is memorable (am sure it will be!).
