Besty22 Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Yeah . I cut mine out as per the cut marks. keen to get home and check it all 1
Besty22 Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Well I checked the current alignment at both positions on your template @@rocky500 near perfect. Thanks

Besty22 Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 @@Tasebass Can a headshell make an audible difference? I would not have thought so but I don't know much about these things. I have around 10 different headshells in a box at home from my dad. all fitted with a different cartridge. I have no clue if they are good or not. Maybe I should swap them around and see if they make a difference. Cheers
Tasebass Posted June 16, 2015 Posted June 16, 2015 @Betsy22 Absolutely. most high end arm manufacturers eschew the removal headshell ( i.e. fixed headshell/armtube ) due to sonic degradation However as with anything audio its no way as cut and dry as that!!! you should have a lot of fun swapping around.... Chigurh Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 (edited) Well I'm trying to love this turntable but it's turning out to be quite a challenge. I'm on to my third one! The first had a tilted, out of whack tonearm so it was replaced. The second one was sounding sweet until the power started to cut out. Eventually it was completely dead. I suspect it was something like a dry solder joint in the power switch. I picked the third one this morning and it's not right either! It has the rattley loose tonearm. I really don't want to take this one back. I just need to get the special screwdriver and tighten it up I think. I hope I don't damage it in the process. On a positive note I have ordered an Audio Technica AT-150MLX cartridge for it. It hasn't arrived yet but I won't put it on until the tonearm is sorted. Edited June 23, 2015 by Biglad 1
Besty22 Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Don't give up @. I have same cart on my pioneer. I reckon it sounds fantastic !
Richard Cranium Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 AT 150 is a great cart, hard to beat at the price point. 1
Newman Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Sorry to hear about your dramas @, but you are adding to the evidence that this deck is not well put together. The concerns expressed by several of us quite early in the thread, based on numerous owner reports of issues, are looking more like wisdom than trolling. Hang in there mate, I'm sure it'll please you when you eventually get a good'un. The basic design is solid and well proven in other brands. And my experiences with the AT150 are all positive, though I can't vouch for its match with your tonearm. Fingers crossed!

Well you are unlucky. despite what the DQ says, you are the only person I have read with any problems outside the slightly loose bearing, but at least the shop/Pioneer is doing the right thing by replacing the table. the slightly loose bearing is an easy fix. Take a small screwdriver and adjust the centre top by 1mm to the right, check if the tonearm is still slightly loose, then another 1mm at a time until the slight looseness is gone. slowly but surely. keep us informed on how you go cheers Edited June 23, 2015 by metal beat
Asteroid Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Yes I had the same loose tone arm on my HTD4.5. I just gave that top inner screw the slightest touch clockwise while rocking the tone arm. Go just enough to remove the obvious play, no more. Afterwards balance the arm for zero weight and ensure it moves freely with a slight breath of air.
Chigurh Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Sorted! Just a tweak of that screw and it's all tight and smooth. It took a bit more force than I anticipated. Listing to Marianne Faithful's Broken English album (in less than perfect condition), it sounds incredibly clear and punchy with my >10yo Garrott Brothers K1. I can't wait to get my new cart now. 1
metal beat Posted June 23, 2015 Posted June 23, 2015 Excellent stuff Biglad Trolls can go to some other thread now 3
Chigurh Posted June 29, 2015 Posted June 29, 2015 My AT-150MLX arrived today from Hongkong. I can't wait to put it on and have a listen. Fantastic service from ebay seller 2juki. Great price and item arrived just 7 days after placing order. 2
Chigurh Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 I just have a question about overhang and cartridge compatibility. It seems that the industry standard is 52mm but the Pioneer says to set it at 54mm for the PL-X1000. Does this mean that non-adjustable carts, like Ortofon Concordes etc. would not be quite compatible?

Are you able to tell us what you think of the sound? Do you need any assistance with this? Edited July 7, 2015 by eltech 2
Besty22 Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 I have found that using a tracking weight at the upper end of the recommended range is best for the 150 MLX From memory 1.75g All other adjustments as per the manual. and an alignment template
Chigurh Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 I have mounted the 150MLX and it sounds pretty sweet. The first thing I noticed compared to the K1 was less surface noise and crackle and definitely more detail as well. I didn't use a protractor, I just got it as straight as I could by eye and set it to 54mm. I have the tracking weight set to 1.70g but I might just tweak it up a bit to 1.75. The reason I was asking about one piece headshell/cartridges is that will be selling the K1 with my Rega TT and I was thinking of buying a cart for use with my older more scratched records and keeping the 150MLX for records in good condition. I was thinking of either an Ortfon Concorde Arkiv ($110 USD on Ebay) or an Audio Technica AT100E/G which is $149 from Store DJ. The Arkiv is a one-piece DJ cart and the AT100E/G comes with a magnesium headshell included. Any thoughts?

IMO, unless you have a 2nd table, I see no real point in getting a 2nd cheap cartridge for scratched records. Stylus are pretty tuff, so it won't do it much harm playing the odd stuffed lp. Better off sourcing mint copies of the most damaged lp's. cheers 1

irons1965 Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Hello everyone, a quick question if I may;- I own a PLX-1000 and it's a query about getting the azimuth settings correctly set up in my headshell. I acquired an Ortofon 2m blue earlier on this week and was undecided of whether to mount the cartridge in my Ortofon SH-4 shell (lighter in weight and almost purpose made for my cartridge) or my Jelco HS-25 (heavier but with azimuth adjustment). Last night after my postings on Steve Hoffman's site, I decided to go with the SH-4 (as it seemed to tick all the correct boxes)....Unfortunately I had to twist (with a little more pressure than I was totally comfortable with) the headshell clockwise to achieve a balanced spirit level reading in the arm before screwing down the collar. The question is have other people here needed to do this in order to get the headshell level in the arm or is my tonearm faulty?
