McDonald's sneakily up-sells coffee if customers are not explicit?

Featured Replies

I go to Mc D. about once every 10 years.  Since I don't know what the latest 'offer' gimmick was last time I just asked for a "a burger please".  Would have thought that would have been easy enough !?  The girly sort of looked at me like half her brain was melted and eventually came out with "do you want a fish burger ? " No I didn't want a fish so we settled on a chicken 'burger' and a drink and chips.  So then it became "do you want the 'meal deal'.  Since I had no idea what that was I had to ask the brain dead girl and the answer was that that it "might" save a few cents.  MIGHT !!

After being neutral re Mc D. It's put me in the negative camp for sure now.  Went to a buger joint for a burger and got dicked about instead.  NOT going back any time soon.

PS: only went cos it was one of those 'nothing else open times'.

And you don't see the flaw with YOUR ordering process?

That's exactly like walking into Bunnings and telling one of the staff you "want some wood" and then getting upset when they ask you what sort of wood you want, or how much wood you want.

When you buy a car, do you just go to the nearest dealer and say "I want a car"?

Clearly you've never worked in any type of retail, sales or customer service sector.

I dunno... I reckon if you ask for a coffee at macca's you get what you deserve

I'm with you on that one. But I'm not at all surprised. I'm sure they have people dedicated to the task of devising sales techniques like that. I stopped contributing to their tills a long time ago.

  • I just don't get this thread. You went to maccas and asked for coffee.... Can't you see a flaw in in you strategy????

I know it is fashionable to rubbish McDonalds but why was the girl brain dead? She asked you what you wanted. That is what serving staff do. They are not mind readers.

You serious?

I guess old hippies just shouldn't go there......

Well....

I don't think I've ever walked in to ANY store of any kind and asked for "one" of whatever it is that store sells

Nor have I ever been to any kind of store, restaurant or outlet that sells one thing and one thing only without any sort of choice of extras, condiments or attachments or options.

Even the sausage sizzle at Bunnings offers the option of onions and sauce....

Hippie or not, I'm baffled and equally amused by your reasoning that the girl behind the counter, and indeed the entire fast food chain was at fault.

Slightly OT but more than 20 years ago I found myself in  Washington DC on a Sunday afternoon and no food places were open. So a friendly cop directed me to a McDonald's store that was open further down the block. As soon as I walked in I noticed a distinct chilliness by the staff towards the customers. Unless you had the exact money for your order you were roundly abused. "What do you think we are ,a god-damn bank" and other choice insults.Several customers were brusquely  told to leave their orders when they produced the wrong amounts and stalked out muttering under their breath. As I was quite peckish I found myself scrambling through my pockets to assemble enough coins to produce the exact amount. Later on that same cop told me that the area was over run with drugs and consequently crime ridden so I guess that may have been the reason for the extraordinary display .

Their coffee is not good at all, $1 coffee from 7eleven is alot better [emoji4]

It would seem the missing word on the day was  "ham".

Just had it in my head they sold 'burgers I suppose.

If you had asked for a hamburger you would have gotten the same blank look.

Used to annoy me when I was bartending, someone would waltz up and ask for 'a beer'. We had 7 different beers on tap and countless more in the bottle... I'd ask 'what beer would you like?' And they would get grumpy. FFS.

Its akin to being seated at a restaurant and asking 'can I have a meal please' or going into a car dealership and saying 'I'll take a car, thanks'. You're going to need to be more specific!!

Is it perhaps time to leave poor E.Man alone?

I'm sure he's received the message. :)

thank you Orpheus  I am at least trying to re-assess the situation.

I don't buy many 'burgers' of any sort but at every independent takeaway I've always received the "Hamburger no onions" that I've asked for.  So I actually don't think I would need to more specific than that.

"Bourbon and coke" has always worked too. (not at takeaways tho ).

The last time I was in a McDonalds store was in Rome in 2006 when I wanted a McShit.

(For those that might not understand, in Italy there are literally zero public toilets so if you need to go, once you have ordered something from the bar (drink / coffee / snack / meal etc, then you become entitled to use the facilities. If you walked into an establishment and asked to use the facilities without buying anything, you'd be shown the door. They are very inhospitable in that regard but so good at many other things.

Thankfully in Rome (Italy in general), they (Maccas), don't endorse that closed door policy.

Haven't had a Maccas burger in years.

Do love a Whopper every now and again though, but always feel like crap after.

A local fish 'n chip joint makes the most ridiculous works burgers ever.

Enough for three people

But back to coffee.

A few weeks back our coffee machine broke so I had to duck out every morning and get a coupla coffees.

The cappuchino from McD went straight through me

The stuff from the machine at the local IGA was pretty decent for $3 however.

The statement I have highlighted in red is not plausible, DVP.

I knew that would rattle someone's cage

You do know I'm the guy with the Senseo machine at home, right?

Just bought one! Much better long blacks than McDonalds!

Edit: actually we bought a Phillips Seaco Minuto ... Real beans, not pods like Senseo.

What pods do you use?

(Assuming we're talking about the same machine)

Ah, well....

I'm sure someone here has a pod machine.

They just won't admit to it.

I know it's average coffee at best, but the convenience and small size of the machine suits me for weekday use.

On weekends I'll go get a decent coffee from a shop.

With a barista.

And heshen bags on the wall.

And pay through the nose for it.

Well we have a pod machine at work, but it is not worth it, as far as I'm concerned.

If I really want coffee, I go and have one somewhere where they make good coffee.

If I don't really care, I just have instant (maybe once a week). The pod coffee tastes like instant, but looks a bit like coffee, because it has a special nozzle to give it a sort of crema.

I don't mind the pods, but they are really quite expensive for make at home coffee IMHO
