Off to Perth for the weekend.  Going to a wedding but should be able to squeeze in a couple of hours of browsing/buying vinyl tomorrow morning.

Any recommendations where to find decent secondhand vinyl in Perth?

Thanks in advance...

Worth a look if you are in the city centre mall but as it says below they are in an alley, 1st floor, easy to miss unless you are looking for them.

78 Records - Perth - Perth Western Australia | Yelp
"78s has recently relocated to a tucked away corner upstairs in an alleyway in the City Centre

Safaris looks good - I keep meaning to visit when I'm over there, probably better than 78

After House of Wax came to its end, I was dying to find old records. I walked in and had this feeling where I would spend more than $50. And yes I always do. The owner obviously knows what to…

This is the legitimately one of the coolest ideas for a vinyl store I've seen. Basically, you walk down a small arcade located on William Street between The Bird and the corner of James Street…

Second hand vinyl in Perth is a bit pricey you will find. My quick thoughts:

From those mentioned above:

78s is one Perth's legendary record stores. They have recently downsized and their focus is now shifting more to more and more new vinyl, at the expense of CDs. So, a great selection of new, but very little second hand, like 2 crates at best.

Safari is tiny and focuses on second hand reggae/soul/funk. When I last visited, their stock had been wiped out by "Record Store Day". Slim pickings and not really my taste in music.

Noise Pollution Records. I like this place, run by Maurice who was in the "Gutterville Splendour Six", from which "The Drones" & "Kill Devil Hills" descended from. A couple of blocks north of Safari Records. Has a great second hand only range of all types of music Rock to Country to Jazz. Reasonable prices (for Perth, $15-$20 average) with $5 bins that are actually worth looking in.

Must mention DaDa's. The other legendary Perth Record store, said to have the largest range of new vinyl "in the Southern hemisphere". Who knows if that is true, but it's an authentic old school record store with very fair new prices, often cheaper than online. My personal favourite. Second hand is schizo and not its focus, most of time not great, but then if you are lucky Rob has just put out a collection he has cleaned up. Expect a treasure trove of dirt cheap ($3 to $10) classic vinyl, it's like lotto.

Outside the CBD, I'd only recommend Plastic Passion in Maylands (5km east on the Midland train line). Though not a must see.

Every other second hand vinyl store will have prices to make you choke :-)

enikoy has nailed it, in my view. Excellent summary of the city and near city vinyl buying.

Upfront's suggestion is too far out if you only have a couple of hours. Was there on Sunday for the record fair and picked up a couple of goodens.

enikoy for the win, no argument.

After 14 months living here, agree 100% with his view.

Basically, expect little, and discover a 'rare' gem, rarely.

Thanks for the recommendations folks.  Ended up only having half an hour to spare (nearly missed the ceremony haha), but managed to get into Dada and picked up a few albums.  Definitely a big selection of new vinyl, and pricing pretty good.

Cheers

Record finder in Fremantle. Biggest used collection. You can find almost anything you want. But you must find what you looking for by yourself. Bit pricey.

Replay is OK, some good stuff there but check the records very carefully.  There are some at silly prices for the condition but generally all is good. Heaps of stuff, look under the racks to see boxes and boxes.

Plastic Passions is def my fav, all the LPs are in top condition and very well priced.  I grabbed a great copy of Atomic Rooster Death Walks Behind You the other day.

Unknown treasures is a bit too expensive for my liking and no where near the price of DaDa's for new stuff

I tried to support this place for a while, but ended up feeling like I was making a donation every time I bought something :-(

Which one did you mean there @@enikoy. I must say that I do love Dada's while UT leaves me a bit put-off, not sure why. Neither are cheap but Dada's have such a massive range of both records and CD's, what's not to love?

edit: they do have a selectiion of electronic / dance type stuff downstairs too.

Unknown Treasures. Very pricey, but seem to have a client base who don't seem to mind paying $5-10 extra for each new LP.

I thought my previous posts were almost an open love letter to DaDa's :-)

I feel like some people shop at Unknown Treasures just because it's run by Sarah (who is very pleasant to deal with), but for me the savings over four records means I could have gotten a fifth if I shopped elsewhere.  78's is good for new too.

I have this very bad habit of reading a series of posts without checking the names, seems we are Dada's boys together. I often wonder, when shopping in there, whether the other browsers are SNA-heads like myself. Could lead to awkward moments if I was silly enough to ask though.

The guy at REPLAY swears all pressings of the same album sound the same....

I went to Plastic Passion a few times.

Picked up some nice stuff there. :thumb:

REPLAY has some very nice cassettes though.

He may say that, but it doesn't stop him charging differently for different pressings.  I also wish he wouldn't smoke in the shop (although never with me in there - he just stood at the door) as it really ruins the pleasure of looking through the records.

Much like buying a classic car from a smokey owner, the price should come down for smokey records I reckon.

Thought I'd add a new shop, Diabolik Books & Records in Mt Hawthorn (near the Paddo).

http://diabolikbooks.com.au/#instagram

Only went there yesterday, but has been open for about a year. Very good selection of interesting new vinyl at very, very good prices.

Focus on indie, electronica & soul, but has all the usual re-issue suspects. Would rate it only behind Dada & 78s for stock range. Prices are either equal to or a bit below Dadas, which make them very cheap, cheaper than overseas online prices. So get in there and support them.

Just a few examples of pricing:

Led Zep reissues from $32

Pink Floyd DSOTM & WYWH $44

New stuff like FKA Twigs & Caribou that are usually $32 to $35, for $29

Plenty more....
