Meat Pies

Featured Replies

We just had a PIE FACE open up near us recently

http://www.pieface.com.au/

not a bad piece of meat, for a franchise

Harrys Cafe De Wheels is another franchise gone mad, must admit i havent tried theirs since the 70's in the days before Elton John discovered it, so dont know if the old Pie n Peas has lost any of its flavour

but where are those golden nuggetts ? I dont mind Mac's Pies as i prefer a softer flakier crust with a decent peppery meat (doesnt have to be chunky) as long as a drop of Worcestershire sauce doesnt kill the flavour

but whats your favourite pie ?

any favourite shops ?

Roberston township still have no cats roaming around ?

It's about 200 metres diagonally across the road just past the lights. They're tucked in behind a street front shop but damn that place was always and still is busy. When I called in it was about 3.00

Boscastle Pies in Melbourne are the best local pies here

Harry's Cafe De Wheels isn't very good. I don't know how good they were before not being here in the 70s but the overpriced pies and peas I've had from them were average at best.

The best pies I've tasted in Sydney are in Camden. A tiny place called Creme Dela Creme. Made fresh daily.

Their steak pies are usually sold out by lunch time and it is hard to get a table (most ppl take away). Pity they are an hour's travel from me, otherwise, I'd be there every weekend.

Used to be cafe in Dunkeld (western vic) that made the best pies I've ever had. Always made a great brekky before a big day of field work in the Grampians

Lots of little country towns have great pies.

Sampled quite a few on my travels.

Love a good little country bakery.

Had a Beefy's pie the other day.

Not bad at all.

For a pie on the go I love the Lorrie's pies.

Can't stand those soggy Mrs Macs bags of pastry with whatever they put in them.

:(

I remember when my daughter was 4 or so she caused to call Four'nTwenty pies 'melted meat pies'. Very perceptive except there isn't much meat in them

I remember going to a bakery in Cloncurry as a young lad on a camping trip with Dad (on our way to Lawn Hill National Park). Keep meaning to go back there for another, but it is a bit of a hike ...

Alexander's in the MLC Centre, Sydney CBD.

Make sure you get a custard tart as well.

I have fond pie memories of a town on the way to Bendigo. Pie shop on the left side of the road. Can't remember the name, but will look for it next time we go that way.

not that far from bendigo, but the bakery in heathcote is well worth a stop for a pie :)

Uranquinty 8km south of Wagga.

Drop in for lunch every year on the way to Bathurst

The Bourke Street Bakery makes excellent pies, but their sausage rolls are from another planet (in a good way). Oatley Pies are excellent and have a superb pastry case. An astonishingly wide range too. The Pie Tin (in Newtown) are excellent. Blackstar are variable. I've had one excellent pie and one dud. Blackstar pies are very expensive (8 Bucks).

Seconded!

They are the current best pie shop in Camden - top notch indeed! I work in Camden and sample their wares regularly to make sure they are keeping their standards high. It's the least I can do! ;)

The previous best pie shop in Camden was Cafe del Rio. SUPERB pies, but sadly they have gone the way of the dodo. :(

I'm so envious! :(

Here is my list of notable Pies (to me anyway)

The Yatala Pie Shop is one I recall from when I lived on the Gold Coast. You could do a Brewery Tour and it would always be finished off with some of their pies and some nice fresh beer. Yummy

Keith' s Pie Shop in Richmond Victoria

I used to go there in the 70's because their pies were about 30% larger than the opposition and I was a ravenous and poor teenage apprentice. Just before I walked in there one morning in 1977 I heard about the death of the King in Memphis. I burst in and broke the news to Keith and he refused to believe me. Once he had turned on the radio and heard the awful news himself, we both had a metaphorical cry and downed a couple of pies each in the Kings memory

Dadds Pie Shop again in Richmond Victoria

They used a soft pastry that had a slight apple flavour (sounds bizarre) that married very nicely with meat and sauce (unfortunately that area of Richmond has now become gentrified and I believe there is a shop there now that sell Fixies to Hipsters)

The Pie Cart outside the Adelaide Casino

On one occasion  I stumbled out of that "Den of Iniquity" in the wee hours of the morning, having rapidly dissipated my cash. I ambled up to the Pie Cart and asked for a Pie Floater. Scrabbling through my pockets I managed to unearth just enough coins. Standing outside in the cold and stone motherless broke holding a fine piece of crockery which in turn held an upside down pie smothered in mushy peas and "dead horse".

What could be better? Ah memories!

I still maintain that the best pie I ever had was from a bakery up at Bamaga (Well, pretty sure it was Bamaga.  One of the towns right up there anyway).

And Augie Sauer pies in Maryborough were awesome.  Okay, not full of meat, but they tasted brilliant and were very cheap.  Win.

I ask with some trepidation, if not full of meat, then what? ;)

Awesome gravy..

Yes HC! Keiths Pies in Burnley st, was very good when I lived there in the 90's. Still operating

I dropped in a couple of years ago and I had a Rogan Josh pie which was quite tasty. Even though it is under new management I am sure old Keith would be rolling in his grave( assuming he has shuffled off this mortal coil) at some of the more exotic style of pies they now sell. Oh well, vive la difference

Unfortunately fame has brought them undone , hc - The pies can have a tendency to be big and pale and anaemic looking , like Gwenneth Paltrow ; but infinitely more serious is their encouragement of the use of little plastic utensils to eat their pies.

Warning : rant ahead.

This, in my humble but usually well-informed opinion,  is sending the wrong message to a whole new generation of pie-eaters. Being based on the major arterial highway , Yatala also attracts interstate visitors from up and down the eastern seaboard. This reflects poorly on Queensland in general...that we should let this sort of shenanigans go unchecked is a tacit endorsement of what we - that's you and I , dear readers - have conclusively shown to be un-Australian behaviour. It's simply not on.

And if you think I'm joking , take a look at the following photo , which I am calling 'Australia's Shame'. This rooster is a young tradie (note the King Gee longs and steel caps) eating a pie with a plastic fork , whilst on the phone to his girlfriend Cheryl with a bottle of water (not a chocky milk) in front of him.

This bloke is surely the Michael Clarke of tradies. And I'm not talking about the 300-plus run-scoring machine of late ; I'm talking about the bloke who doesn't want to sing Under the Southern Cross I Stand because his girlfriend is waiting outside the dressing room with a bottle of Cristal and a pocketful of pingers.

Bruce Ruxton would roll over in his grave if he could see this. Sam Kekovich would have another heart attack. It's disgraceful. This kid needs some serious time in the room of mirrors. No wonder he’s eating alone  .........and breathe

Willow's recommendation is a little bakery just out of Ipswich - Mrs K's Place , just off the Cunningham Hwy Yamanto , one hand pies FTW.

Good one Willow

One of my earliest pie eating memories was at the footy at Victoria Park in Melbourne. Standing on the terraces eating a  hot pie smothered in dead horse and trying to stop it falling apart. All this while precariously balanced on a six pack of empty tinnies to get a better view over the big grown ups in front. Once the dastardly breweries introduced aluminium cans it was all over red rover as the anaemic bloody things would crumple in a puff of wind.

Bring back the Steel Can I say.

BTW maybe that young tradie rides a Fixie?

BBB is way overrated and over priced.

Yes, Oatley are good but one of the best in Sydney is a little pie shop, half way between Engadine and Woronora Heights.

Otherwise, Sefton is great.............closely followed by Ermington which has the best value pie in Sydney.

Harry's aren't the same as in the old days.

a good pie shop can be the focal point of an out of town weekend run (car or bike), and some pretty good ones on this A List.

that one is nearby, sounds good and will be well worth a look Sir T, some nice twisty roads on that run

anyone finding themselves on the open road down south there's Kangaroo Valley Pie Shop in the township on Moss Vale Rd with quite a claim to fame that isnt far off the mark with some brilliant country atmosphere on the verandah...dont know what the new owners have done but hopefully they followed the recipe
