Master,

I think the extraction time for this cup was far too long, was on the phone with Kiat for 20 mins! :)

Grasshopper,

20 minutes extraction is probably a bit too long...:D

I have a rancilio cafe-o-gram which gets a thrashing EVERY morning. Very hard to get decent beans in these parts so we order from the coffee barun in Adelbrain. I work by eye normally and shut it down when it begins to pale.

We use a corner location for improved caffeine loading and have been considering upgrading the power cable....

Have been trying the coffee from Compos, opened the 3rd pack this morning and that was the Brazil Ipanema.

Not too strong or bitter yet good body and a touch of acidity. Just nice for me. However, I would like it roasted darker for a bit more caramel for extra sweetness.

Grasshopper,

In my experience most Brazil beans need to be dark roasted (what they call 'Full City plus') to get much flavour out of them. You may find that that is all the flavour you are gonna get out of those Brazils. Very rarely are they great by themselves, but make a good base for blending.

Master 2sheds,

Yes, I have been thinking all day while sweeping the temple, now I know why 1 + 1 = 11!

Very good, master, I will mix them next time. Actually, last time I mixed Gloria Jeans' with those you left behind, the blend was very nice and the crema was oozing out from the spout.

I just have got back from doing a 3 hour coffee course at Cafe Veneziano ( http://www.venezianocoffee.com.au/ ). This was run by David Makin, runner-up at World Barista Championships. This is the 3rd coffee course I've done and the best - I learnt lots of useful and very helpful things but unfortunately got to use a LaMarzocca espresso machine...........try not to think about it.........you don't want one!

Highly recommended:D

So....A couple of months back I decided to buy myself a coffee machine and was saving up to get one of your run of the mill myers jobbies. As luck would have it this thread popped up and opened up a whole new world of hurt :P

Coffee machine was put on the back burner as one of my other passions got in the way (new speakers :) ) however this morning I woke up and thought....bugger it! What's a credit card for if it's not going to accumulate debt! :P

I've ordered a Rancilio Silvia & Rocky (Doserless) Grinder kit from coffee-aroma I simply CAN'T wait!!!!!

So when's the next SNA Coffee GTG??? ;)

Piccies to come.

Noiz the best investment in your coffee making will be doing an espresso course. Just remember that most cafes have machinery that is an order of magnitude better than your Rocky but make crap coffee because they aren't educated with the required skills.

You should years of pleasure from your Rocky.

Thanks mate, I've been doing a lot of reading however I know it really boils down to what I can make of it all. It's quite exciting actually, to be able to make, mess up and learn from experimenting with beans and different techniques etc.

I've been a long time fan of coffee, however to be able to make my own brew. Now that's going to be something special :P

Thanks again for the kind words proftournesol.

Good on you Nolan (see it didn't take to long to recover from the speaker purchase). I too have been eyeing off a coffee machine. At the moment I'm thinking the La Pavoni Europicolla. It really is a whole new world, compared to instant and plunger coffee.

See my travels with this machine so far at: http://foodwinecoffee.com.au/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=19

Didn't take long to recover you say? Mate, who said anything about recovering :P oh well, you only live once.

I just had a look at the machine you mentioned. I don't know much about this topic but can certainly say it's a great looking piece of equipment!

Marc, thanks for the link! Sure to spend a good amount of time going through a few threads there :)

cheers,

Nolz (Noiz) :P

Campos is the best coffee I have ever had. I used to be lucky and work at the corner of king st and missenden road. Used to have three a day!

Your machine definitely looks nice... I even found the place your brought it from. You paid a good price for it.

Make sure you let us know how it goes.

Morning guys,

After 3 weeks or practice, Master 2sheds is happy with my progress on coffee making, I was given the opportunity to attend the class for Chapter 2 at Temple 2sheds. :D

Now, I learn the wisdom behind the bean counting, bean grinding, tamping, frothing and drinking...

Thanks so much for the time and fun day yesterday.

Hi Jack

your cups are too big to fill to the top or you'll be diluting your coffee. Most Australian coffee shops use 220ml cups but optimal cup size for a 30ml espresso pour is 170mls. Add 170mls of water to one of your cups and then your total coffee + milk pour should fill to that level.

Hi Michael,

WOW, I am impressed, even from the photos I posted, you could see that we were onto something different.

Master 2sheds was merely showing me how he likes his coffee during the day and by no mean this is the "proper" way to make the espresso.

I am still too green to understand the basic but I am just taking it slowly and hopefully the M3 grinder will allow me to explore more into the art of making espresso.

It was my pleasure. At the rate you are learning, you will be giving me lessons in a couple of months. An enjoyable day

Spot on, Professori  As Jack mentions, I was pouring Jack and I, my stock beverage - an Americano - double shot, topped up with hot water and a little warmed milk ( a less milky flat white, if you wil) all in a 220ml cup.

We later had a piccolo latte - half espresso and half heated milk - in a 125ml cup (not filled). I tend to leave the flat whites, lattes and cappuccinos to when I'm at cafes, or else I feel to bloated after a couple :D

Well, took my first step into a larger world a few days ago and replaced my junky old grinder with the sunbeam EM0480.

What a difference it's made, have to learn how to make expresso all over again but I'm rapt with the improvement.

Picked it up for $159 on sale, great price for a grinder that works so well. I'll post a pick when I get my expresso making skills a little more finely honed.

Cheers

CJ

I've got an update to post also  Received my Silvia and Rocky combo yesterday at work, I got so excited that I even unpacked it during our down time just to get a better look at it before I got home :D

As you can imagine, I was wide awake for most of the night and improving with every cuppa. So much to learn and so much fun doing so!

I'm so glad that this thread revived my desire for a proper machine. And thanks to all the contributors that helped me decide on the Rancilio combo. I'm only two days into it but am already in love :D I'll put up some pics over the weekend.
