If you're planning to dig deep into brews such as V60 and chemex then the Acaia Pearl is one of the best, very responsive, easy to clean, long lasting batteries (I make 1,2 cups a day and charge it once every 2 months), can measures rate of pour, it also can connect to apps which graphs your brewing profile - which i find too gimmicky. But if you're only after a scale to weight beans or extraction shots then the cheaper scales like Brewista Smart scale would do a go job. Ive tried Hario and theyre not responsive, the Ohaus Navigator is extremely responsive but way too large. Everyone I know just end up with Acaia Pearl or Lunar at the end. Hope it helps.

I Conur with with Hario comment here.  I have one - It's OK but it's quite slow to respond which can sometimes get a little frustrating if you use it very frequently (eg. every day).

I have no idea what this is lol.

I'm trying to work out why the Brewista is so much more than scales such as this one

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JG1PXLC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_feKHDbW6CX272

Water/heat resistance, ion lithium battery, very small - to fit in the drip tray, auto tare and timer (senses when you put an espresso cup on and tares for you, senses when the coffee starts to drop and starts timer for you), and more importantly responsiveness

But if you're using for just weighting in your beans then any cheap ones will do, as long as its accuracy is to the 0.1g

Sounds like some good features as long as it works reliably.

Basically I want to know how much coffee is bring grinded into the portafilter and how long that takes as I'm looking to upgrade my grinder with timed grinding settings.

Knowing how much coffee (weight) is extracted into the cup would be an added bonus instead of just timing the extraction.

If you want to measure g into PF in real time so that you can quickly stop your grinder at a certain g then you'll need responsive scale. And if you want to manually switching extraction button on/off at certain g in the cup then a responsive scale will make the job easier and more accurate (or else you will go over a few g due to the delay). I also have a Mazzer Kony and Robur (both timed grinders) PM me if you're interested.

enjoy your coffee

I weigh the beans before they go into the grinder with a $7 scale from dx dot com, and have been using it for years. I don't know how accurate it is but the numbers are consistent.

I gauge the extraction by colour. Even with the same weight of beans and the same grind the extraction time can vary by a few seconds from cup to cup.

I've ordered the brewista, and I'm thinking about a grinder upgrade.

the price of good digital scales has dropped over the last decade, driven by the drugs industry!

I volumetric dose with my Versalab, not as good as dose-by-weight in theory, but in practice the variation in bean size probably amounts to 1 bean difference.

I stop the extraction when it starts to blonde.

I knew I did that B. Pharm for a reason. My espresso has never been better!

Actually, according to some experts, "by volume" is the best way to dose.

It works for me

At the end of the day if you can taste the difference in the cup or it makes your job easier then it matters, otherwise don't get caught up with the hype and trend and waste your money. ?

My god! I hope that we never apply that principle to audio gear!?

Oh no we're in audio for the weight and rrp bragging rights so nowhere near 'easier' at all hahaha

sshhhh! RRP is only between us, the 'official figure' is what my wife thought I've spent

I was given a bottle of this to trial, and though I really didn't want it to make a difference the rotten stuff did. Add 10ml per litre of demin water (which I use religiously) and away you go. The immediate impression was that it removed the sharp edges from the flavour without diminishing it at all. Might try it in some whisky next?

LOL - If i had to live by that policy I wouldn't be able to have friends who are into audio, coffee whiskey or cars.

Does that leave many people?Bahahahaha!

OK I'm curious.  So what is it?  Coffee concentrate is not very descriptive!  You can have concentrated water?  Maybe something that's designed to chemically react with water somehow?

Magnesium sulphate and sodium bicarbonate apparently

Anyone own a Ceado e6p or E37J?

Small footprint here. Space, like others is at a premium. I went with the Bezzera bz10 HX machine. I have an Anfim grinder. The BZ-10 does me, pulls an OK shot.

Aesthetics are important to me, the Bezzera won out in that regard from its competitors in this price range.

There are a number of manufacturers of 're-mineralising' machines for espresso machines that are fed on reverse-osmosis water. Apparently water that is too pure doesn't taste the best for coffee.

I use a multi-mineral mix to turn my heavily filtered water into mineral water for making fizz.

Well, after much consideration I've decided to go for the Rocket Fausto as my grinder upgrade.

I seriously considered the Niche but my wife did not approve of its looks. I also was considering the Ceado E37J but it's just a bit too wide in size..

FYI I've just put up one of my Ditting KR804 on classified, If you change the stock burr to the Mahkonig Peak burr and it can rival an aligned EK43. A very under-rated grinder, and a beast too. 5sec for a 20g dose.

Grossly off-topic.

As I was walking past the Starbucks section in my local supermarket I stopped to investigate. Starbucks is applying the format of computer printers to coffee.

Buy a cheap machine that uses the pods, and then pay (55gm for $6.90) $125 per kilo for coffee! So reasonable.:emot-bang:
