I'd like to try open back, planar headphones

Featured Replies

So, I mainly listen at home through my Ascension floor standers but, occasionally I'll use my Meze 99 classics closed back headphones. My portable setup consists of my Google pixel phone & a variety of in ear headphones or the Meze.

I'd like to try a pair of 'very budget friendly' open back planars but, not sure how cheap I can or perhaps, should go.

I've been looking at the Hifiman 400SE. At $199 it's certainly very budget friendly but... Can I do better without upping the price too much... I've been looking at the 2nd hand listings here & then reading reviews & I'm just really not sure where to go or whether my budget (likely around $300 tops) even makes it worthwhile...

I like bass... Lots of bass... I understand open back headphones generally don't offer thumping bass well, not without substantial EQ but, I'd like to see for myself without spending a ridiculous sum of money.

I'd greatly appreciate any opinions & experiences to guide my final decision.

Thanks in advance

Oh. I'm willing to consider a portable headphone DAC/amplifier for my portable setup if, it will improve the experience sufficiently.

The 400s are very good at their price point, give them a go.
