Let's not bog down on this discussion. It's the festive season. There is much to be happy about reflecting on 2025 and I would rather channel my energy in that direction.

Go to the currently drinking thread I say 🥂🍹🍸🍷

Merry Christmas

Lowballing is never a problem and then one day you go to sit in the car seat and sit on one and the pain is excruciating. It’s just something that happens with age………. Oops I think I’ve misunderstoo

I’m heading over to the currently drinking thread now…. Still trying to work out how it’s taken me so long to go there! 🍻

But on this topic, I am still struggling to see how anyone would be offended by the proposal?

If the world has come to this….. gawd help us!

I see it differently perhaps. A lowballer wasn't ever really a potential buyer in the first place. They are just an opportunist, and ultimately, it depends how desperately the seller needs to sell. They may even be doing them a favour providing a quick sale that gets someone out of a bind. Maybe think of it like a pay-day lender. The choice to sell solely remains with the Buyer.

On the other hand - I like lowballers as I get to practice my sales techniques and skills. Anyone who makes contact is a lead, and therefore a potential buyer.

Personally, I don't take offence to lowballers. But I know plenty do.

The last bit… $500 cash for your Everest’s? “Big big wink”

What is the definition of a low baller? Any lower offer or an extremely low offer? I dont understand the issue with the former. I come across many items on here that are sold higher than elsewhere, it could be better condition or people , like me , tend to hold more of an affection for the item and value it higher than what it may be worth at its age but at the same time may have it in much better condition or less usage.

My bigger issue is flippers as usually they are also lowballers looking to flip the item for a higher profit by first getting you to sell it under the going rate.

Flippers are the the lowest form of life on this forum. Fortunately, they are usually known by regular members and ignored accordingly.

pffft, I offer $501 !!!!

I need to confess. I low balled and benefited. I had coveted the M Scaler as an addition to my Qutest but could not entertain one at retail price. A couple came up in the classifieds that I forced myself to ignore. Another came up at a price which was more than fair but I could not personally justify after making a resolution to myself, after last years excess, to refrain from further spending. A resolution which is now laying in tatters while barely into Feb....

After watching for a few weeks and telling myself to let it go I reluctantly sent a message to the seller apologizing for the low ball offer and explaining that I believed his price was more than reasonable. I said if he was not successful in selling it and still wanted to move it on I would pay what I had offered. I said I understood of he didn't want to respond and wished him good luck with the sale. He responded pretty quickly saying that he would reluctantly accept my offer as he was having trouble selling. He was an absolute gentleman about it and dispatched the M Scaler quickly.

While I am overjoyed with the M Scaler, I am not really comfortable celebrating my win as I still feel a little guilty. I guess he didn't have to sell it to me. 🤷

I don’t really need an M Scaler but if it helps to assuage your feelings of guilt, I’ll take it off your hands for $50…

I take back everything I have said regarding low ballers and StereoNET.

Recently both my wife and I have seperately listed the same aquarium that I have listed here, on Marketplace.

I don't think I've ever gotten so frustrated in my life as my experiences on that platform dealing with buyers scammers timewasters pricks tyre kickers lowballers.

The first question is not even anything about the item being sold or our location - it's always price. And if something is advertised for $700, what in the world makes them think we are going to sell for $200 AND deliver it????? Times this by 40 or so "people" over the last couple of weeks and that would best explain our Marketplace experience. How anyone transacts on that platform I have no idea.

In a recent sale, I have been low balled, then had to meet a stranger only dealing cash(a large wad had to count) in a unknown location (worrying enough), to only then see the lovely piece of gear (that I had spent 1000s to improve) only to see it (matching serial number) being flipped by someone else? for a lot more the following week :D

is this called the triple ?!? is this how it flies now ?

such are the joys of buying and selling these days ...

Maybe there should be a flipper badge here, Big & Bold for all to see, takers have no limits....as many have said, too many time wasters, wankers, extreme low ballers etc... on certain platforms, some more so than others. I would rather let the item sit in its box, then sell it to flippers or extreme low ballers.

If I see an item that's obviously being flipped, I would stay away. A lot of the time you can't tell because the seller has removed the amount on old for sale ads. Of course if the final bid is less than the ask then its not accurate anyway but more sold prices the better to help buyers value used items.

Havent tried marketplace yet, but Gumtree was the same experience for me. it was all about price which implied that most likely they were flippers or not that keen anyway.

I've advertised and sold one thing only on facebook marketplace, and that was a car. The lowballing and attempted scamming was outrageous. I asked one such person if it ever worked, they claimed that it did; I can't think of any other reason to do it other than that it occasionally gets a result.

Not from me but...I would rather give something away to a friend than sell it to someone trying to make some free money.

I’ve had a reasonable experience with Marketplace and actually met myself an electrician when selling some cables. That said I have to agree with the "what’s your lowest price" or "are you negotiable" comments. I find these enquiries are more than likely low ballers. I’d rather someone just make an offer.

We found marketplace a very useful area when selling off my Father in law's stuff (no audio stuff there). Offered for reasonable to low prices and people stumped up what was asked for. And in only a few days.

Possibly it was what was being sold. And there was probably no reasonable way for onselling at a profit (well there was, but it would have taken a while).

So at this time, it's OK by me.

Only one personal experience - trying to get rid of some stubby beer bottles. Less than cost, but better than putting them in the recycle bin.

Very timely marketplace experiences. I advertised some fishing gear yesterday. I was inundated with inquiries and only one annoying, "whats your lowest price?" Sold two rods and a reel tonight to two gentlemen. Rocked up and paid the price and everyone is happy. I think it does come down to what you are selling.
