2025 System Updates

Featured Replies

A lot has changed with my system and room. This system is getting to a point where I am very happy with it. I have added twin twelves with custom crossovers that go down to 28Hz which is more than enough for the type of music I listen too. New speaker cables. I plan to upgrade the source cables in the near future.

The boxes are (Outer) 15mm 11 layered A grade Eastern Europe Birch Plywood lined with 12mm MDF & braced.

Temporary fitted on 25mm MDF trollies with heavy duty castors. The Enclosures sit on rubber suspension.

I received the clear acrylic boxes to house the crossovers, unfortunately both were damaged in transit. Replacements are coming but I ended up making one to see how it all goes together.

My new additions.

I am surpised how good the other setup incorporating the Rogers with the mid subs sounds compared to the Spendors. The Spendors probably have a nicer top end due to the Rogers start to roll off around 16KHz where's the Spendors roll off at 20KHz.

The Spendors image better but overall are very similar between the two which i'm very suprised. Even though the Spendors look bigger, the Rogers overall have the bigger driver setup of the two. The Rogers use an in-house 8 inch mid woofer with an Audex 1.3 inch tweeter coupled with my custom twin 12 inch mid woofers for the low freq below 220Hz down to 38Hz wheres the Spendors also use an in-house 13 inch doped Bextrene-cone woofer, smaller 6 inch polypropylene midrange and 0.75 inch Scanspeak dome tweeter made only for Spendor.PXL_20250817_0540340432.thumb.jpg.c004d4ee90fb8865de65e0895dd5da7f.jpg

Repaired the black mesh grills. Polished the black front grill trims. Add bottom tabs to easily remove the grills.

These are the first generation of the S100's where Mr Hughes designed before he passed. They're very low serial numbers as well.

Had a friend and his gf come over a few weeks ago and he wanted to listen to system i have designed and built using the Rogers LS5/9's with the twin twelves, not using the Spendors. He put a few tracks on and the next thing i look across the room and he's tearing up. I asked him if he was ok, he replied - the song just got to me with your systems sound. I was touched really. His GF text my wife the next day and this is what she said below;

The next stage is room acoustics. Audiophiles spend so much time switching between gear, selling - upgrading trying to improve the sound but forget about the room acoustics. Here is a time line of what happens in an uncontrolled room enviroment. I have done the 1st 2nd & 4th events. Next is surface reflections / diffusions etc.

After more testing, my speakers have moved more away from the wall because i wanted to hear a better soundstage which it did happen. It also improved the bottom end freq at the listening chair. Before i do the room tests which it really isn't that bad, I'm planning to design vibration pads to decouple - isolate the speakers and the equipment which will improve both imaging and soundstage.

“Event: 1st sound energy arrival Source: Structureborne vibrations -
floor/chair/bone conduction
Control method: Mechanical decoupling”

I was hoping that the extra few kilos I’ve put on over winter would help with extra absorption around my bones and add some depth to my mechanical decoupling.

Seriously though, love your work, very enjoyable to follow, it must be very satisfying and rewarding to listen to.

Another update / upgrade.......

SB Acoustics super tweeters. I have made custom crossovers and front baffles. Currently in primer and I'm hoping to put the top coat this weekend.

Spendor Update. The scan speak tweeters have new acoustic foam around them. You can still buy both the foam and tweeters.

Ended up welding and tapped new brackets to house the new casters on the bottom of the stands. I will be repainting these in due course and isolating the speakers from the stands.

I love these speakers and these were the last design of the famous speaker designer himself, H Spendor

I love the old skool look of these cabinets.

They remind me of my Dad's.... Phillips which were/are cracking speakers. [Especially corrected with DSP].

The twin 12 are actually Phillips, large magnet versions. Great drivers, very musical.

Your speakers, Philips tweeter and mid-range, what drivers?

Edited by Sansui77

I did some minor surgery to miror image the drivers on baffle.

Nice….

My speakers originally had Hokutone bass drivers… which were nice….

I ended up covering the slot port, and moved to a circular port for the peerless.
