betty boop Posted June 13 Posted June 13 (edited) Picked up Kingdom of Heaven Directors Cut - extended edition on 4k uhd blu-ray via Zavvi in UK, there is a metal steel book version but i got the plain jane version which i am happy with... I found it an utterly gorgeous movie, i really enjoyed, watched over a couple of nights ...as the roadshow version on the 4k disc has an intermission...seemed appropriate point to pause and reflect.. before watching on the next night. This is epic ! it really is... some 45min removed for the theatrical version.. thank goodness we have the directors cut here with all that included. This is so far my movie of the year ! For those wondering... "The kingdom of heaven" is Jerusalem, and the movie is about Balian of Ibelin the main character, the Leper king (Baldwin IV) and his sister Sibylla of Jerusalem, her son. and Saladin who brought together the muslim armies with goal to retake Jerusalem. It is set during the 12th century crusades and the battle of Hattin is a main feature as culmination of the movie. Picture and audio is very apt for movie of this scale. Both so well done.. there is beautiful scenery and what see and hear is to a grand scale.. the audio is an atmos track that renders beautifully with 9.2.6 setup we have... I popped some screen shots below from the first half watching with our jvc 4k projector and so wonderful to be able to enjoy something like this in the home... Edited June 14 by betty boop 2
Kaynin Posted June 13 Posted June 13 I've never heard of it. I'm torn though, I like Liam but not Orlando. I actually prefer Liam in a more dramatic role like this, rather than the action hero which he usually fails to convince me (although Taken is excellent). 3 hours is a big investment. Oppenheimer was bad enough. Maybe I'll give it a go like you did with intermission style over a few days... 1

Liam has a part but early on first 1/3rd movie... Orlando's role does get criticism it seems but actually goes with perspective of what he actually is i think.. may not please all though 1

Like I said, I've never heard of it, so if I like it then it's always nice to find a hidden gem. 2
IMDave Posted June 13 Posted June 13 Thanks @betty boop. Saw the review on HighDefDigest: https://ultrahd.highdefdigest.com/145455/kingdomofheavenlimitededition4kultrahdbluraysteelbook.html and am hoping for a local release. No Pre-Order available at JB as yet. Yes, Ridley Scott is one of my all time favourite Directors. And unlike some, I love epic 3hr opuses. 2 1

I knew from the first theatrical viewing that the compromised edit was just a glimmer of Scott’s true intentions. The Director’s Cut is simply a revelation. It’s not just adding length it’s adding plot depth and character development expanding the scale of the film into a truly epic undertaking. 20 years later, this film has lost none of its potency and remains one of Scott's great accomplishments. Now the film is looking and sounding better than ever before with this exceptional Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos A/V presentation. It’s just about as close to perfect as this title can get. Capping off this release is the expansive bonus features package. I fondly remember spending days going through the commentaries and documentaries back in my college years and revisiting a number of these segments is a thrill. Simply put, I can’t imagine a better 4K release of Kingdom of Heaven. Must Own" another good review is the avforums one just come out overnight... just read the today and also pretty spot on ... https://www.avforums.com/reviews/kingdom-heaven-2005-4k-blu-ray-review.22755/ 1
RCADees Posted June 14 Posted June 14 Same here, never really heard about this one. Thank you for the review, will definitely keep it in the list to watch/order. If this is in the same league to mark film history as Gladiator(I) then it is a must watch. Talking about Ridley Scott, it is also one of my favourite directors. However, Gladiator 2 seemed to have been made in a bit of a rush. It was good but nothing magical or transcending. Will have to re-watch again and give it another chance. 1
illusion Posted July 3 Posted July 3 Excellent cut of a great Ridley Scott movie. Al did you pick up the sublime thread in the story that the Hospitaler was anAngel? 1

cafe67 Posted July 3 Posted July 3 Think I have the directors cut on blue ray , have to check, certainly makes more sense than the theatrical movie. good acting by Neeson, Bloom , Irons and the guy who plays Saladin. 1

For years i took that character as his 'guardian' angel and not literally an Angel from heaven in physical form. That makes sense now as in his parting words he smiled (without fear) to Orlando that was a good bye. 1

Zavvi seems to have it for $48 (+postage) with all region blurays. Not sure if JB will get it. Some movies I just have to pay a bit more for 1
