Wineries along Great Ocean Road

Featured Replies

Heading off to the G.O.R. next week, coming in from the Queenscliff ferry and staying near Apollo Bay for a couple of nights.  Anyone know of any wineries that are worth popping in to their cellar door?  All suggestions appreciated :)

Really liked Scotchmans Hill, large range of wines in different price classes which is handy if you're not prepared to be forking out a lot of $$

The Swan Bay range has some good buys and the winery isn't far away from Queenscliff.

Very pretty winery too as a bonus!

Can't think of any wineries on the Ocean Rd proper. There is Longboaders at Bellbrae between Torquay and Anglesea. If you go to www.otwayharvesttrail.org.au , or come into the Lorne Info Centre, you can get a map with a couple mentioned around Deans Marsh inland from Lorne. Gosling Creek does have an enjoyable Reisling.

Cheers Mike

Thanks buddy!  That's awesome, I'm putting Scotchman's Hill on the cellar door must visit list...  I'll have a look at Swan bay as well EDIT: good prices on the Swan Bay, that's excellent.

Thanks Mike!  We intend to stretch the legs in Lorne, so that's a good tip to pick up a map, will do that.  I'll have a squizz at the link too, thanks again!

Pleasure - Kaynin, check out all the falls around there, there's heaps to see and nice countryside as a bonus!

not exactly along the GOR, but Pettavel is also worth a visit.

It appears Pettavel is now known as Scotchman's Hill, which is a certainty to drop in to for us.

One thing though...I can buy Scotchman's Shiraz (2011) at Dan's ($27) but at their cellar door (2012) ($31)...not sure if there's much of a difference in batch, but pricing isn't impressive so far, and same goes with the Pinot...not that it will stop me, of course!

You never, ever compare prices with wineries and Dan's - it sours the experience!

My oldest son told a guy giving us tastings of a Tassie whisky in Richmond Tas it was $50 cheaper at Dan's on the mainland.

This guy was seriously p!$$ed off until I tried to soothe his feelings recounting the vast quantity discounts they wrangle out of distilleries & wineries, often cleaning out the whole cellar of some of them!

Just remember - it's part of the admission fee!

Arghh...thanks - the last time i went there would have been at least 3 years ago :).  But concur with DisMember, I guess generally at cellar door you pay for the privilege of tasting their wines.

Well lads, got back yesterday.  Popped into one winery only.  Scotchman's Hill was a bit out of the way, so just went to Bellbrae Estate which is directly on the GOR.

Was happy with their Longboard Shiraz, and very very happy with the Bellbrae Shiraz, so grabbed a few bottles of each.  An excellent holiday souvenir!

It actually a bit more complicated. If the winery sells at the same price or less than the retailers, then retail will cry blue murder and accuse the winery of stealing sales. The winery/cellar door has to be the most expensive option to give retail a clear 'discount' advantage.

+1 for this. Dan Murphy et al will usually prove to be cheaper for a case than the cellar door. The cellar door does give you a chance to talk to someone who knows about wine, which is getting harder to do at DMs.
