Felt panels

Featured Replies

Hi all,

new here but home cinema has been a hobby for over 20 years and I'm keen to finally get my home theater in order after dealing with roof leak issues that prevented my from finishing of my room (or even using it most of the time).

I want to install black felt panels on the wall behind my screen but am finding prices pretty uncomfortable for something that is relatively basic.

When I get a quote on Ali the product cost is negligible (we're talking less than $200 for 10 panels) but unfortunately shipping throws a spanner in the works.

When I look at prices locally, it's as if the same material is laced with gold judging by prices.

Am I looking in the wrong place and does anyone have any recommendations for where to source felt panels?

Ideally I'd want them at 2700mmx650mmx12mm and install them spaced off the wall by using magnetic mounts so that I can get some extra acoustic benefits as well as making it easier to run speaker wire behind them, hence I think 12mm thickness is probably the way to go but happy to stand corrected if I can get away with 9mm?

Cheers!

Why felt panels?  There may be other room treatments that could be more cost effective.

What problem are you trying to solve in the room?  And please provide more details of your room and room treatment so far.

The room is a blank slate, in a certain sense after fixing those roof leaks 🙂.

Wall with screen is 6.5m wide. Screen is motorised 3m (135"). Room is 5.5m deep.

Not really trying to treat the room acoustically much (my Dirac takes care of most issues), the dark felt is more for projection purposes to limit reflections.

I'll be putting prempanels on the ceiling (acoustic felt with wooden slats) between the screen and the projector only), just haven't found a good source for rigid felt panels for the screen wall.

Happy to consider alternatives but ease of installation comes into play.

With the magnetic mounts I'd be making this removable in case I ever sell the place and the owners don't like dark walls ;)

You seem to be happy with the audio side, so will skip any discussion on accoustic treatment.

Why not paint the back wall with non reflective paint? Easy and cheap to do!

It is easy enough to make panels with black cloth from Spotlight.

Black paint is a big nono. Hard to paint over if I want to turn the room into something else prior to sale and hard to paint right to begin with. Easy to get into a streaky smudgy mess that shows all plaster imperfections.

Would also eliminate my option to run cables behind the felt panels. With magnetic mounts I could leave a gap between the panel and the wall of a couple of cm's that would allow for that.

Don't like the look of cloth and kind of like the look of the felt panels. Especially with chamfered edges you can make it look great.

Not a fan of curtains either.

:D

Have a space next to my audio components measuring 1.4m x 1.0m x 0.6m (9mm thickness) and always thought it needed some acoustic treatment. Cruising through Bunnings and found SPECRITE PANELS on special at $19 for 12 Hexagonal self adhesive tiles. Anyway I used "charcoal" rather than white or blue or orange and took care of that area.....just did the back wall but could get out of hand. Cuts easily with a box cutter blade too.

i have lined my projector wall with the black felt panels from bunnings.

they have a NRC of .9 at the higher freq's

they do help reduce slap echo and complement my other treatments

they improved the whole veiwing experience hugely

zero light spill on the front wall, also seemed to be an improvement in percieved contrast

i went with smaller 1200x800? size as they are easir to handle

i fixed with wall grabs ,straight into gyprock, suprisingly solid, dont overtighten!

then covered each screw head with sticky velcro dot( soft part)

not the most eye pleasing but the wall just disapears when the lights go off.

I installed a couple of those exact panels yesterday morning (although light grey in colour) in the office as part of a dart board installation.

I ended up using some Gorrila Grip branded double sided tape and it worked an absolute treat on a painted masonry wall. Super strong hold. I used around one roll of tape (7m) per panel @ $15 per roll. Definitely a viable option if you want to avoid using screws, although I suspect it will be harder to clean up if you want to remove the panels later.
