Further Information

This is a very rare, single, Goodmans Axiom 80 Driver in corner cabinet. Everything works well, and it sounds great.

It's rare becuase it's a factory made 3 ohm, early version as you can see by the original Goodmans papers. This one was bought from United Radio in Pitt St Sydney in 1949. You'll see in the attached document also the original cabinet design.

It's a lovely sounding speaker particularly for vocals, acoustic, classical, jazz. Just set it up in a corner of the room and it sounds wonderful.

Did I read that Invoice right?    1949!!!    OMG - it's older than I am!

Actually, I recently heard an article that 2024 is the 100 year anniversary on the invention of the loudspeaker.... as we know it.         That's a REALLY significant milestone, and the genesis of our passion for sound reproduction.       AND.... at 1949, these Goodmans are harking back to close to the dawn of that era.      🙂

Ha yes it's amazing  that speakers this old still produce amazing music. I actually emailed the Axiom 80 designer Ted Jordan in 2016 about these (he was 87) and was delighted to see them. I told him about the previous owner who had them from 1949 till 2016 and loved listening to classical music on them and Ted got a big kick out of that and the fact that I (a new generation) was also enjoying them.

So..... I'm guessing that would be..... Mr J. Dark, Esquire, who worked in the Forestry Office in Coffs Harbor??    ;)         Wonder if he's a great grandpa of Mr John Darko?

Ok thanks for clarifying. As a Goodmans speaker engineer he was stoked to hear how the company's speakers continue to bring enjoyment years later.

Now THAT is incredible providence ........    how many pieces of audio equipment come with the original invoice and documentation that is 74 years old ..........    and from what I've read about vintage Goodmans speakers, quite a few followers rate this as the BEST driver of all .....   GLWTS

and looking at the cabinet, I would say that if the cabinet was built in Australia ( which seems pretty evident ) I would say it is Australian Coachwood .....    a very nice woodworking timber indeed .........    if the original cabinet builder used imported timbers, I would say it's probably American Cherry .....    another excellent woodworking timber.   ( can't guarantee without a physical inspection though )......................    anyway, with just a little bit of spit -and - polish, the cabinet would come up a treat !

You are 100% correct. It is Coachwood! The original owner's wife, told me the he made the cabinets himself from Coachwood. He worked for the forestry dept so knew a lot about working with wood.
