'Sound lounge' ideas

Featured Replies

Hi all -

I'm very excited that by mid-2023 i'll have my own space in our new home to blast away my favourite tunes and not disturb the rest of the family.

The room is 4m wide by 5m long and I'm after feedback on anything I should think about or that's easily modified given where things are at (prob should have posted earlier!).  I do plan to measure and optimise the room with relevant treatment measures once everything is in place (and find a place for the tiki bar!).

Please refer to attached sketch and here's a summary of the key design aspects:

Floor:

  • concrete slab
  • quality triexta carpet with 11mm dunlop diamond touch underlay
  • large wool rug

Walls:

  • steel frame
  • 2 sheets of 10mm gyprock
  • R2.1 insulation
  • heavy blackout curtains on side wall (covering 2.4m long by 900mm high sliding windows

Ceiling:

  • 2 sheets of 10mm gyprock
  • R2.5 soundcheck acoustic insulation

Door:

  • solid core; with acoustic seals if needed

Proposed configuration:

  • as per sketch; equipment along front wall, speakers out ~ 400mm from front wall and ~500mm from side walls
  • leather sofa with cushions sited in optimum iistening position
  • record storage (will build ply 'bin'-style storage and position as shown or under window

Electrical

  • Ample GPOs for gear and throughout room (no special circuit etc)

Gear:

  • Dali euphonia MS-4 speakers
  • currently powered by Bryston 9B-st; will be upgrading to class D or Conrad-Johnson SS power
  • Michell Gyrodec
  • will be thinking about possibility of a short-throw projector and pull-up screen

Comments welcome - thanks!

added info re electrical

I would probably have the gear under the window and a drop down screen that comes down in front of the curtains.

Is the idea to stop sound going into the rest of the house via that steel framed wall?

Thanks Logicprobe -

I'll have a think about the gear location although the turntable could be more affected by airborne vibration?  Gear to the side though would definitely make it easier to have a screen setup (or a large TV).

The whole house is steel-framed so the room has the same construction as the rest of the house (but double the gyprocking and more insulation).

Hi @wadiman, awesome to have your own space!

Good isolation in a listening room from the rest of the house so you don't disturb the rest of the family when you "blast away" can be a challenge to achieve.

this amount of isolation may meet your needs.

If the room construction is completed, you'll need to install your stereo and determine what volume levels are acceptable in your listening room without disturbing the rest of the family.

You can't change the level of isolation/sound proofing of a room after construction - you have the isolation you have.

You can change the quality of the sound within the room with treatment - I would target room treatment at lower frequencies 1st, ie corner straddling absorption to achieve reasonable bass absorption but avoiding absorbing too much of the direct treble reflections.

Given your room is "lightly constructed", ie Gyprock and steel frame - you likely won't have significant "low bass" resonances bouncing around the room compared to say a cored besser block walled room 👍

I have a lightly constructed room - all the low bass leaks out or my room - I regard this as good, and I manage the volume in my room accordingly within the limits my family and neighbours are OK with.

I have a bunch of absorption treatment cleaning up down to 150Hz or so, and a few bands of EQ cut <150Hz that provides a pretty good bass response in my room.

I crank my stereo often - but not for long and never late at night...the family complains occasionally and I turn it down...and so far none of the neighbours have complained 👍

You likely require better isolation than you have to be able crank the stereo whenever you wish :(
