Sentient - Active conversion project.

I've observed a bit of a trend over the last 5 years in hifi circles,, that trend is, if it's an active implementation, it has to be digitally based.  We get more flexibility, eq, etc etc.

But, an analog based active implementation, still offers real and tangible improvements, IME and IMO.  Hifi enthusiasts who love their analog sources can still embrace the active approach, without digitizing the signal to do it.

I used analogue active XOs for 20 years or so with my Maggies - and they worked just fine (Rod Elliott's P09 ... except modified to deliver 18dB / 12dB slopes).  So my TT signal stayed all analogue ... and there was a D2A conversion on my CDP.

However, when I moved into a new house, I added a pair of sealed subs - these were positioned about 1.2m further away from my ears than the Maggies ... so I needed to be able to delay the Maggies, to time-align them with the subs.  This required me to change from using analogue active XOs to digital active XOs (miniDSP).  I don't regard this as a backward step.  :)

  • Initial listening, is quite good.  The woofer is very capable, warm sounding, deep, vibrant, yet runs up to 600 without any obvious drama.   The mid dome, delivers very sweet sounding vocals too, quit

  • all speaker boxes now converted to direct wiring,,, cheap ass passive components have been bypassed.   4 way active.  One electronic crossover per side.   the sound is clear, clean

I can acknowledge the added flexibility of running a digital crossover.

Going active doesnt mean that everyone *must* adopt the digital crossover approach.    One can build a great sounding all analogue based active hifi system.   And those who are invested in vinyl, shouldnt shy away from an active system built around an analog active crossover. IMO

I will play with a digital crossover sooner or later, because curiosity will get the better of me.   But I will always have systems with analogue front ends.

As do I - vinyl is my "sit down and listen" experience.

Properly integrated stereo subs, is usually a step forward. 😇

Back in the day, I had a Marchand electronic crossover which had delays. I just looked them up, and Marchand are now offering a 4 way crossover, with delays, 24db slopes.  RRP is exxy, but looks sweeeet.

I never tried it, but I'm told people used to time align by introducing longer cables lengths. 🤪

Yes, but it shows that going over to the "digital dark side" is not necessarily a retrograde step.

I suggest you should look at the speed of electricity travelling along copper wires to work out how long they would need to be, to get even 1ms delay!  :o

I dont believe I used those words, anywhere in this thread.

Speakers moved into the bedroom.  Sounding nice. 😍

My bedroom system has an old Kenwood integrated, which has a preout/main in loop.   So I run it out to the swamp, and bring the HF back in.

Am using a Rotel multichannel amp for the bass and mid drivers.

ok, so, the active speaker project that ended up in the home theatre, is about to go through another round of development.

As a reminder, here they are, in place.

I'm planning to add more bass drivers.

And they could look like this......

I definitely prefer the 'look' of the monster tower.   Although mildly concerned about bass wave cancellation.

The latter image will probably blend better, but the aesthetics arent really doing it for me.

🤪😎

Plan to implement 4 way active.

with the bass pairs wired in series (or parallel).

@Sentientwhat will live between the speaker towers?  I remember my sister once had seahorses and they appeared to react to certain types of music as they would swim up and down vertically in the tank and all other types of music they wouldn’t react.

🙂

Hey, they're currently standing in a temporary build location.   That empty tank is due to be given away,,, it has developed leaks, and I am not interested in re-sealing it.

These towers will end up in my home theatre, if they sound another notch up, on what I did previously?

Your speaker setup reminds me of B&W Matrix 800.
