I've got one of those Ikea cube bookshelf thingys which I alphabetically store my records (clear slip. Labelled with band name). Hopefully getting some dividers soon to assist in retrieval etc.

I also use a phone app to log my collection. Helps with browsing.

Just interested with who does what as my collection is to the size now where I can clean forget which albums I have. I'm sure some of you got passed that point a long time ago.

Pretty much the same

Plus I sub divide by genre- jazz, blues, rock, indie, classical, chamber

then each of the larger of these with dividers alphabetically

The app I use is called CLZ music. It's one of those apps that supposedly allows you to scan the barcode and it does the rest. So far the scanning function has worked on one record only. So I manually upload.

Best feature is the wishlist as my wife can easily see what I want when required.

IKEA Expedit. Almost finished culling collection from 7500 to around 1000.

Keen to know how best to organise them now.

By Genre, Artist, LP's vs EP's etc?????

The only downside I've found since organising my collection is it takes away from the random finds. Often I don't know what I want to listen to and when it was all over the place random records would pop up fir a listen. These days I know what I want and grab it leaving some records unplayed for some time.

Ikea Expedit, 2037 lps, A to Z regardless of genre, A on top left facing, Z on bottom right. Catalogued long hand in a journal since i bought my first 10 and decided i needed a catalogue of them back in 1978 and updated with each purchase. If i want a random lp then rather than pick one out of the Expedit i will open the journal at any page and either pick one from reading the 20 listings per page or close my eyes and point my finger.

I got a shelf made for the records, then I got another as the first was full. It really isn't that expensive. As for cataloging I just use a spreadsheet and I loaded this on the phone with a free office app, this is mainly for insurance and to avoid buying an album I already have (which I have done numerous times).

Here's an old pic of my shelves:

There's a fair bit less free space now.

We also got a bookshelf made, here's the left half of the bookshelf:

That's right! I was married with two kids and a mortgage by my 24th birthday. Had amassed a collection of 7,500 odd records all of which where still at mum and dad's.

Every few years, my mum threatened to put them out to council clean up and I will go around, sort through, sell some, send some to Vinnies and move what was left around to make mum think I did something.

Finally started the task of moving them across to my home and in the process sold more, gave away others, and sent some more to Vinnies.

The goal was to fit the entire collection in one large Ikea Expedit unit. Almost there!

I try to keep my music in alphabetical order, I do, I really do, but it always gets mixed up somehow!

I could use Georginas (my partner) method - in our phone book she puts most phone numbers under E for Everyone

I built shelves under the stair case.

Sorted alphabetically, by first name ie Tom Waits is under 'T'

Sorted A-Z, except compilations, 10" and 7" which have their own section. I use plastic outers from Pigeon Records (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/50-NEW-LP-RECORD-OUTER-SLEEVES-SEND-FOR-FREE-SAMPLE-PROUDLY-AUSTRALIAN-MADE-/151040333796?). I'm going to replace inners with MoFi ones as I find the cardboard sleeves that most records come in hard to handle. I keep a catalogue of albums with http://www.discogs.com through the Discollector iPhone app (https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/discollector/id605663708?mt=8).

The Pigeon inners are great too. I wouldn't waste my money on the MoFi, they offer nothing more apart from the frustrating square corners.

Surely discogs is the most effective way of keeping a database of your purchases?

Not to mention how awesome it is seeing things pop up in your "wantlist"

What are you using for storage?

Is that a modular unit and if so from where?

The discollector app I use caches your discogs database for offline use. You can also export your list from the discogs website.

Like Jake said, mofi, Nagoka and alike audiophool inner sleeves are a waste of money imo.

I have 5000 lp,s and threw my Nagaoka inners out many years ago.

standard u shaped poly inners are fine, just make sure you get them out of the cardboard and paper sleeves. For LP,s that do not have cardboard lyric inner, the polylined paper inner sleeves are superb. Covers33 has those.
