NEW FEATURE: Notifications Updates (Push Notifications etc)

This seems to have resulted in me receiving a notification each time someone posts to a thread I’m following  😱

That’s not what I had set up before. What worse, I can’t seem to turn it off – the fine print on the settings page says “changing this option will not affect content you are already following”.

Can this be fixed somehow? It makes notifications practically useless now, I won’t find the interesting ones among the flood that’s coming in.

When I follow a thread it’s because I want a notification whenever someone posts.

 Isn’t that how it’s always worked ?

Yep.

I wasn't aware that I was following any threads until I started getting notifications.

So I just whacked the Unfollow button.

Note quite, not for me anyway. The way I had it set up was that I only got notifications when someone quoted me. This has changed overnight.

Also, threads I start or post to are automatically followed (I rarely follow threads by clicking the “follow” button). I don’t get notifications about them, but they are flagged with an orange star instead of a dot, so I can easily spot them in topic listings, activity, etc.

The things is, the behaviour suddenly changed, and I cannot set it back to what it was.

That setting is here:

For me, this is the only one that’s changed. I don’t think you used to automatically follow threads you start. It’s easily turned off though, here:

I don’t believe the orange star ever flagged only threads you started. For me it’s always flagged that I’ve posted in the starred thread even if I didn’t start it.

for me, as I mentioned, the only change has been to

automatically follow threads I’ve started. I quite like that so I’ve left it on. It’s simple enough to turn off if you don’t like it 👍

But it’s not. Any changes I make to these settings will not affect the many threads I’m already following (i.e. threads I started or posted in). So I’m stuck with all those notifications now, that I don’t want and never configured. The only notifications I had set up were the ones on the “Mentions  & My Content” box.

I’m confused.
The behaviour has not changed for threads you follow. You’ve always received notifications for them.

The only thing that’s changed as far as I can tell is that you’ve been automatically opted in to follow threads you’ve started since the change was made. I’ve only been opted in to my own threads that I’ve started in the past few weeks or so, not every thread I’ve ever started.

I believe that the change is that the change is that you now automatically follow every thread that you contribute to, not just the ones that you started.

I don’t think that’s happened?

For example, I don’t receive notifications about posts in this thread (unless I’m quoted that is).
Perhaps my posts aren’t good enough to qualify as “contributions” 😀

I am receiving notifications for this thread and every thread that I contribute to. I think you're right about your posts ;)

In summary:

  1. I have always automatically (via config setting) followed threads that I either started myself or posted to.
  2. I’ve never received notifications when someone posted to one of those threads, because that’s the way I had it configured.
  3. I now do receive notifications when someone posts to a followed thread, even though I didn’t choose to.
  4. I cannot restore the previous behaviour, because whatever settings changes I make only affect newly followed threads, not the ones I’ve been following all along.

This is highly irritating, since I’m now getting lots of useless notifications for high-traffic threads I’m following. I always read all my followed threads anyway (I’ve got a custom stream set up for that), and all these notifications swamp the few that I do want to receive.

Go to “Topics I Follow”

Click on the box in the top right to select them all (or just select the ones you want)

then click the notification icon (the bell)

and select the behaviour to apply (eg don’t send notifications)

Thanks, that worked. I hadn’t discovered that particular page yet.

Interestingly, not all of my followed threads switched to notification, only some of them. Annoyingly, among those were some of the more chatty ones, like “currently spinning” threads.

Anyway, I fixed them all up now, I hope that’s the end of it. I still wonder why this happened, but at least I know how to fix it if it ever happens again.

How can I turn the notifications off? I’ve always had them off, but now I’m getting 50 or so per day. I find notifications stressful - like being at work.

There have been updates made to the Notifications settings for your profile, so I would suggest going through these to see what you would prefer.

You can do that here: https://www.stereonet.com/forums/notifications/options/

See the post by @sir sanders zingmore above. Managing notifications won’t help you here, you have to go to Manage Followed Content and reset the notifications there for the threads you’re following.
