Amature Room Question...

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Ive recently bought a new house and am in the process of turning the downstairs room into a man cave.

Ive lined all the walls and ceiling with Mass Loaded Vinyl and Soundcheck plasterboard while using acoustic insulation batts for insulation.

I will be replacing the windows over the coming months with a double glazed option or whatever is best for soundproofing.

I DJ in the room and play electronic music loud. My set up Is in the corner as shown.

The room is 3.7m Wide X 5.6m Long and Ceiling height is 2m. So it’s a low ceiling….

I mix using a pair of Adam A7X monitors and im thinking of bring my Adam Tensor Deltas into the room also for listening sessions.

I just wanted a starting point in regards to adding bass traps, sound curtains, acoustic tiles etc to the room. Atm there is something not right with the sound and I cant put my finger on it. Its echoe and doesnt sound good unless your actually djing (ie close range)

The floor is tiles also which im sure doesn’t help. Ill hopefully have this sorted in the next few months and install vinyl planks with a soundproof membrane underneath.

My dj set up is pretty close to the wall unfortunately as I don’t have much room to play with.

Any tips appreciated

Thanks

Ed

Have a look YouTube videos, I’d treat first reflect point to reduce some reflections so it will be less echo. Some tiles are ok. Depends on the budget, primacoustic and https://soundacoustics.com.au/

should be good.

The best location for your speakers is where the Tv is located. No door to worry about and the speakers can be the same distance from the side walls. Also your mixing desk is too high. The speakers should ideally be at head or ear height.Have a look at attached pic you can see the sound triangle set up.Cant see it working for you unless you rearrange the room.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately the tv needs to remain on that wall as all connections etc are run through that wall.

I will switch the DJ desk and beer fridge around so it is more central.

I stand at that desk while doing so the speakers are head height.

Thanks.

I disagree - it looks to be a perfect height for its intended purpose which is  DJing. The speakers are at ear level and the desk places the turntables are a nice comfortable height. Any lower and it becomes a fatiguing back-breaker.

The TV connections etc. can be moved if you relocate the TV, a bit of a hassle but not a huge job.

You mentioned that you play your music loud.  I can understand that, I used to listen to loud music when I was younger.  I would strongly suggest buying a decibel meter (they are cheap on eBay), and keeping the volume in check.  My hearing is starting to pay the price for the volumes of past years.  Wish I could go back in time so I could have better hearing now.

Im getting much better volume wise and given i have 2 young kids i only get to mix 2 or 3 hrs every 3 weeks and while its loud its not that loud. Im 42 so am wary of the hearing issues. Most my music is listening volume in the house but when i mix it is louder. And the style of music carries and echoes.

Changing the settings on my adam a7x's has helped a bit but i think the main difference will be made when the floor is carpeted. Sound proof dbl glazed awning windows going in next week also.
