If you custom order your steak, it is quite nice.  Normally it comes on a hotplate with gravy on top.  Ask them for it to be on a normal plate without the gravy and then the steak is quite good.  Much better then some restaurants where I have paid 2 or 3 times the price.  Plus you can bring your own wine withut a corkage and they have glasses for you

 

Not good picture of the food, but I love this place.  It is a Laksa Steamboat restaurant, San Katong Laksa Steamboat Restaurant (Telok Blangah)

Ah... Mak noodles. No nonsense , no fancy crap, good old HK street food. It is indeed very good.

 

Served hot, best slurp them up within few minutes for best taste.

 

 

Last Friday we went to Hong Kong for food & shopping ... tried this famous Mak's noodle at 77 Wellington St, Central. Wanton noodle at HKD 35. per bowl, pretty ex.

 

 

Right across the street, this Tsim Chai Kee noodle shop sell almost same types of noodle and it's double portion at HKD19 per bowl !

 

 

That's co-incidental. I had a bowl of noodles at Tsim Chai Kee on Sunday. I think Mak's noodle is overrated and overpriced in comparison.

 

On Monday, my colleagues brought me to Kau Kee, at Gough Street to eat beef brisket noodles. Really yummy !

Try Mak Mun Kee at Jordan, cousin to the Mak's and pretty good.

My wife and daughter going to Hong Kong for first time in Nov. Can recommend good and cheap food places (typical Singaporean lah)  Also for shopping.  I was there about 7 years ago for business and stayed at Tsim Tsa Shui but  ate in restaurants.  Company paid. But this time it is private for them. Thanks

My own private list of places I go to eat whenever I am in Hong Kong,

 

1. Tsim Chai Kee (Wellington Street, Central) - Wanton noodles

2. Kau Kee (Gough Street, Central) - Beef brisket noodle

3. Spring Deer restaurant (Mody Street, TST) - Please make advanced reservations - Peking Duck

4. Lan Fong Yuen (This is Cha Chan Teng)(Gage Street, Central) - Pork chop bun, milk tea and various type of instant noodles

5. Ming Yuen (Soy Street, Mongkok) - Claypot rice

 

There are some other institutions that people like to go just for the experience, although they may not be the best in terms of food,

 

1. Lin Hueng teahouse (Wellington Street, Central) - Tim Sum - Organised chaos

2. Mido Cafe (Temple Street, near Yau Ma Tei) - Typical Cha Chan Teng food and backdrop for many movies and serials.

In Singapore I go to West End at Bueno Vista Road for Steak Very good Also try their fish and chips and their fish of the day which is snapper.

Makan yesterday for 2 days in shenzhen baoan street side stall -

RMB 50 can get me a yummy pot of tian ji - frog dish, a bowl of shui dan - steams egged, with rice and a bottle of qintao

RMB 40 can get me a yummy pot of sweet and sour pork ribs with rice and a bottle of xue hua

 

makan until wanna burst cause the serving they only have 1 which is meant for 2 pax and above.

Yup the lamb is my favourite with mint sauce. Also their laksa is pretty good. Actually  everything I have tried there is good.

What's there to eat with these heads? Eat the tongue or something? Even something I'd probably draw a line at.

 

Also had pigs ears in Spain before- but not fried/roasted, just parboiled without salt. Yeuch!

I'm not a great fan of chicken skin- guess the same goes for chicken head skin and chicken brain too  :D

Just had dinner at Hua Nam 244f Upper Thomson Road - pretty impressive Zhi Cha - $40 for three dishes, rice and a plate of dim sum.

Just tabao Nam Kee chicken rice at toa payoh lorong four, beside former police station.

Bought 1 whole chicken 4 rice, 1 mutton soup and 1 pork ribs soup, all cost me 65 bucks.

Quite shock with the price, with the long queue I thought it will taste good.

 

I was wrong. It tasted no better then the loi Kee chicken rice near my place.

Soup were worse than my maid's cooking. Donno if it's bad in their performance today or..

Anyway, I will not visit again. 2/5 stars from me

Wow, that's really exp...go further a bit to Sin Ming, the Nam Kee at the row after Long House is quite good and def cost way less :)

Local to you, I'd go for Bong Tong Kee. The imperial (or whatever the premium one is called) white chicken is really quite tasty. Their other dishes are also passable.

 

Compared with Loi Kee, its more expensive but then Loi Kee gives you meagre portions and fairly bland white chicken- I think they have a stall in Whampoa which is better value for money though not sure about whether its the same name.

 

If going for roasted chicken, the Wee Nam Kee one on Thomson Road is hard to beat- big portions too. Their white chicken is generous but bland tasting.

 

 

... if its one thing I miss from HK its the wong yow gay (yellow fat chicken)- superb chicken flavour. I'm sorry but the quality of the bird itself cannot be beaten by anything I've eaten locally.

I really think its up there with Label Anglais or Bresse which are v expensive birds.

For chicken rice - the Mei Ling St hawker centre white chicken is superb, come by when you rotate over, and I will buy that for you bro!
