Been trying to resist doing that, it's so cheap in the UK in comparison (I always thought stuff sad more ex in the UK- aka Rip Off Britiain).

Exchange rate fluctuations.  From our point of view, it was probably more ex when the pound was in the 2.7-2.8 range.  But now that it's down to 2.05-2.1, things in the UK are a lot cheaper.

What "annoys" me somewhat is we went on holiday to Italy last year, when the Euro was still around 2.1.  Things weren't too expensive, but not bargains either.  But now with the Euro down to 1.75...

Yup. It's a great time to buy that Zonda or French Chateau. LOL!!

my small display bottles in office, left one is for drinking, right contains the rarer flavours for display only :P

under my table i still have a good stash of crystalized ginger, mandarin, apricot, chestnut, caramel, jinogalpa, singatoba and tanzaru in unopened sleeves  :-X

Bro-Fancis is a Nespro fan, its a good little machine and produces a reasonable coffe... but I personally prefer something with a little grunt and control... so I have a Pid'd Rancillio Silvia and Rocky combo

Not my pictures but the same models...

Cool display, i know they are vaccum sealed but dont they have a shelf life?

I keep my coffee bean in a vac pack in the not-so-cold bit of my fridge and try to consume in 8 weeks as the flavour supposed to go off even for whole beans.

@wizard

Cool setup. Alas I have no space for that stuff- I just have a ceramic Gaggia grinder and some filter papers.

But have to say that Francis' one is soo easy to use and clean.

Cool ! I've never seen those striped capsules before, nor have I heard of those exotic flavours, but we're latecomers to Nespresso.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.  Even in the initial pack of 16 capsules provided with the machine, there was a 'use-by' date written on the box of the machine itself, indicating when those included capsules would expire.

from experienced users, the hermetically sealed capsules are good for a couple of years past its expiry  :o :o

Hmmm sounds good....maybe I'll bring the pluto's over on the weekend if I get my car back

any nespresso lovers here?

over a year ago i lugged a citiz back from zurich because it was cheap (370sgd).. and i've been popping 3-4 coffees daily ever since  :P

Yes, i am using Nespresso Essenza and Aeroccino  ;D

However now waiting to send Essenza for repair  :(

I have the Citiz with milk.  I know also Bros Kelso, Jonlee and Ray (Raindrop Audio) have the machines as well....... :D

wow you guys are hardcore coffee lovers! :)

I started my addiction last yr while working in the states. The coffee in Starbucks there are comparatively cheaper than the other coffee houses around, and also surprisingly cheaper than Singapore's Starbucks! As a result, I started drinking at least one cup a day during my tea break...Now, I'm drinking their instant mix...cant seem to find it in SG...looks like its only available in the states for now...

Very close to their daily brew...except that I get to enjoy it anytime I want... :)

Once you have tasted freshly roasted, ground and pulled shots you will find the likes of starbucks closer to drain water.

Don't get me started on chain store coffee....even the smell is created by scents, just like in subway etc

If you really want a nice shot go out the back with phil or Cedric at highlander coffee in bkt merah and ask for a shot to try

+1

Also the quality of the water makes a difference.

... You mentioned highlander before.... still haven't had the chance to drop by. Do they have any more branches?

thanks for sharing the lead. ;) i would have to try it sometime soon.

i feel a good barista is hard to find or if not out of the way for me :(

Anyone tried Singapore's most famous barista at Oriole nr Somerset MRT?

actually i dont like nespresso, but only for the convenience and freshness, the eluant from the capsules is decent but i still prefer freshly ground/roasted coffee.

when i was staying in sweden for a short while, i had the most awesome coffee from johan and nystrom selections, freshly roasted, freshly ground.. yumyum  :-*

Read about them on the paper, but never got a chance to try it though. How much for latte?

Can't quite remember... remember thinking, "ouch, thats expensive"  ;D ;D ;D

Think its about $6:50 incl tax. Same price for takeaway  :'(

John at Oriole pulls a great shot too.... also another old friend from the old Sooma also opening up a cafe again soon. Espressoul is also not bad - the old geek terminal folks..

fresh roasts need 4-5 days to mature...the 1st 24 hrs in non sealed containers then in sealed for 3-4 days... after that they have a good use by time of around 14 days...they go down hill after that.

Once ground they must be used in minutes or oxidation destroys the flavour.

Milk hides too much so coffee should be taken black or with some hot water. italians like a little sugar in the espresso too, never any milk in coffee after morning ...so the story goes.

.

Wizardofoz, sorry haven't followed up with you about coffee. You are most welcome to try my Vibiemme. You may just end up buying one !

Freshly roasted coffee is not that easy to find, especially if you like your roasts lighter than the usual offerings.

Freshly roasted coffee actually vents carbon dioxide for quite a long while, at least 2-4 days. For my own roasted coffee, its peaks at the 48-72 hour mark after roasting and is good for about 7 days. After that, its downhill all the way

Thanks bro. I still like a bit of milk in my coffee though it is harder to taste and changes the acidity. There's no room for milk in the morning for the Italians as it has to make room for the Grappa!  :P

I also take a little sugar like the Italians, just to offset the bitterness a little. They also like to order a cappucino and then add another expresso. Then watch the world go by, a nice life eh?

Love italian coffee, how do they get it so right? One of the best coffees I've had was in a rundown cafe in Naples- total surprise. The French also pretty good but very French in character.

Oh the food is a bit hit and miss.

The chef seems to have quite a coarse palate and heavy handed with flavours. Ok for me but some may think it lacks finesse (ok, I'm just that kind of guy ;D)

Its the water...so I was told in italy :)

@ nbs...

milk...hides too much so that bad coffee isn't perceived as such...for good coffee its still ok, but bad coffee you cant drink black or espresso.

I would love a domobar... maybe one day... for now the mrs says my coffee is great and I also have no big issue...but upgraditus will get me sooner or later :)

Another good roaster is papa paleita (spelling) and also Tony at biopolis coffeshop - forget the name.

I have some nice greens to roast if anyone interested to try a home roast - I dont have one...I go see tony or phil :P
