It's the way of the world, actually.  Thankfully no EPL games are PPV yet, I'd be really pissed if I had to pay extra for the Arsenal v. ManYoo or Arsenal v. Spertz games coming up.

This is beginning to sound like watching boxing PPV. Sheesh.

FIFA does dictate that certain matches must be free to air if i'm not mistaken eg opener, semis and final but that was past WC. Perhaps some enterprising folks can get it offline. Then I don't mind going for a 10mips subscription and hook the pc up to my tv.

Looks like consumers & sports fans, in particular, are made to suffer in the name of MORE OBSCENE PROFITS to Starhub. Mr KLONTZ, are you happy now?? Is this how you treat your loyal customers???

Firstly, you complain about high acquisition prices from ESPN (that's not entirely true. If your marketing team is aggressive enough to procure more sponsorships, this wouldnt happen) Then you took away our beloved Serie A & you made us pay extra.

And now THIS????!!!!!!!

If there's another Cable TV player in the market, I will definetely switch camps.

Mark my words, when Euro 2008 comes, Starhub will surely increase prices again.

Yes, someone said about free LIVE football from RTM1 & 2 is correct. I tell u the truth, no one in Msia watches RTM 1 or 2 much, coz they have their TV3, NTV7 & the other I cant remember.

And how come these channels can provide FREE LIVE WC COVERAGE?  I suspect STarhub is another NKF in the making. Siphoning unsuspecting subscription monies. Is there any check & balances? Why would there be one? Starhub is, after all, a money making organisation. For them, shareholders interest & PROFITS comes first, consumers' plights will hear into deaf ears.

That's Starhub for u. Good thing I just sign up with M1.

I would be submitting a letter to Today in response to Starhub's explanation.. anyone got suggestions to add or want to add their names to sign off as well feel free to elt me know

"We refer to the letter by Caitlin Fua, Manager, Corporate Communications & Investor Relations, Starhub on 29 March.

It is heartening to see that Starhub has taken measures to help the interests of its subscribers by not raising the price for its Sports Group for the World Cup and introduced a pay-per-view system instead. This ensures that the Sports Group subscribers who are not interested in the World Cup are not penalized.

We know many a sports fan who subscribe to the Basic Tier just to be able to access the Sports Group. If Starhub has genuine interests in their subscribers’ predicament, why not allow Sports Group home subscribers to subscribe only to the Sports Group without the need for the Basic Tier?

We’re sure Starhub has received many negative feedback from irate football fans for the PPV World Cup coverage. Our abovementioned suggestion could be a welcomed reprieved for countless irate fans and it is in line with Starhub’s customer service maxim of having the subscribers’ interests at heart."

I love hidden sarcasm and using irony  :D

Gotta say that's a good point.  After all, Sports group is not cheap.  And if their argument is that there are fixed costs, by all means charge a further $5 or $10 for a standalone sports package, which is still less than the $20 minimum for Basic Tier.

Personally, though, I watch a lot of Star World and AXN, some news, and the wifey enjoys the Animal Planet programs, so I would still have to subscribe to Basic Tier anyway.  But for the rest of you guys, as well as pubs etc, I can see the attraction of a sports-only package.

i watch the documentaries too ..but have to pay for another 2 channels (entertainment/cartoon) which i hardly watch. I want to choose just the Documentaries and Sports only

True, the packages, although slightly more flexible than back then when basic included everything in the 5 basic groups today plus sports at the higher price of $30, are still not all that flexi.  The so-called Action package, which is the only one that features Sports, includes 2 of the premium movie channels, which are quite expensive, and since it's all blah-di foolscreen pan-and-scan, I refuse to watch butchered films anyway and therefore don't have much interest in them.

While typing my previous post, I was indeed thinking "how about basic sports package, one basic group plus sports, for the cost of sports plus $10", but at the end of the day, Starhub is going to want to recoup fixed/admin costs, and if they've pegged it at $20, they're not going to go much below that, so if you're going to pay, say, cost of sports + $15, you might as well pay the $20 and have the option of 3 basic groups anyway.

At least the World Cup PPV is only $10, for the whole lot, and not on a match-by-match basis, which would be real PITA.  Considering the cricket world cup cost a helluva lot more, $10 isn't much.  Then again, very few would have bought the cricket, whereas World Cup I imagine almost everyone who subscribes to Sports for the football will also buy World Cup coverage -- which is nearly all Sports subscribers.  Two questions come to mind:-

(1) How many subscribers to Sports do NOT watch football?

(2) How many subscribers to Sports who do watch football are NOT buying World Cup coverage, and will go to pubs/leech off friends who did/give WC2006 a miss?
