I searched but did not find a topic on this so started one. Please merge with the other if I missed its existence.

I usually watch movie buys or rentals on my ATV 4K, but have watched some of the content included in the free subscription to plus, you get when buying an eligible device.

The main reason for this post is to rave about Mythic Quest, which I love so much. It’s so well written with awesome characters and it’s hilarious. Basically it revolves around this video game company and their flagship game, Mythic Quest. It follows all the different team members in their roles and interactions with their peers and all the many issues they have on the production of the game etc. I probably didn’t sell it well but what makes it is the writing and acting. I’m very hard to please with comedy but this has me cracking up often.

Most of the actors are new to me, except one of the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia guys and a guy from Happy Endings, but don’t think his is a recurring role.

I watched a few episodes last night and was smiling from ear to ear. It looked great in the ~96” projected image too. It’s in 4K and most of the other good specs. I’m up to about ep. 6. The last episode was a big departure as it follows two new characters from the past but it sets up some of what we already know. That’s an interesting and different screenwriting choice.

Had it for the free trial period, most of the stuff was on other platforms, but found a couple of good things:

For All Mankind: The Space Race of the 1960s between Russia and America, with a twist, worth a watch.

The Morning Show: Long term co-anchor of a morning show is accused of sexual harassment of female workers and is laid off, the company has to find a replacement over a weekend. Also shows the goings on behind the scene and those trying to get further up the ladder in the entertainment industry.

So I bought a new laptop which gives me a free trial for a year but I can’t for the life of me work out how to watch.

I’m sure I signed up for the trial but everything I click on seems to have the usual Apple TV charges. I’m on an older (2nd gen?) Apple TV - does that make a difference ?

One of the things to be aware of is that a major part of the app is collating content from other services, so perhaps this is what you saw.

Apple doesn’t have that much content so far, but they have regular deals on rentals e.g: I rented Zombieland Double Tap last night for 99c. You won’t get very new releases for under $6-7 though, but that’s the same everywhere. I’ve seen titles like Jojo Rabbit for $10 to own, which is good compared to the cost of the disc. I’ve rented or bought movies for much less than elsewhere and in my experience with Foxtel, Amazon and Netflix most of the free stuff is average.

Apple has the Beastie Boys Story documentary exclusively and the new Tom Hanks film Greyhound. They’re getting more free content for subscribers all the time, but right not I like it mostly for it’s integration into my home theatre and iPad. I had a chrome cast but didn’t like it much as I want an interface not have to control it from my phone etc.

As above, a lot of it is pay per view or purchase the title, but there’s plenty of free stuff of Apple’s own too. Just look for a free to watch tab or similar. It’s mainly free TV shows though, so check the TV tab. Not many free movies last time I checked. The older ATV may be a factor but get/open the app on your laptop to see. The latest app will give you an indication of the current situation.

Ted Lasso is really good. Nice mix of stupid unrealistic comedy with some drama mixed in. I find the later more appealing.

I thought this was the suprise hit of 2020. Went into it very hesitantly, but LOVED it and can't wait for Season 2

Anyone watching this

I love it

The good old days

The really really really good old days😀

I was 20 years old (any age that doesn’t start with a 7 is kinda groovy)

Impossible to explain in this day and age how important records were in your life and how they soundtracked your political beliefs

1971 is a stunning, stunning, stunning musical experience.    4 eps in and 99.9% of the video footage neither my wife or I have seen before.  It is mesmerising viewing.

Music fans do not miss it.

I’ve got Apple TV 3rd gen and I’m confused every time I use it.

I now find the program I want on my phone then use airplay to watch on Apple TV.

You go to Apple TV app (on your phone) then go into the Apple TV+ channel. That’s where you’ll fine their original content. I find it hard to navigate though. Not as user friendly as Netflix.

I’m quite enjoying Mosquito Coast at the moment.

I have just upgraded my iPhone and get a free year of Apple TV too (but not set it up yet)

I have Apple TV app built in to my new Samsung TV - so I assume that will work and I do not have to buy an Apple TV unit?

This may help some with confusion on using ATV - I agree it’s not apples best effort at usability, which is usually outstanding.

For actual Apple TV programs, go to the ATV+ tab

If you’re in the ‘watch now’ tab, and don’t know where it’s getting a show, scroll down to ‘how to watch’:

I've never heard of apple tv being built into a tv. Just googled it, and it's a thing. Hmm. Pretty cool. You should be able to use your apple credentials that you use with your iPhone to start your subscription.

I watched the first episode of Oprah's new show with Prince Harry on mental health, and it was very good. Insightful and moving.

It's pretty easy to navigate tbh. Just got to get used to where things are. Watch now is a bit pointless, but shows recommended and your watch list content. Library shows content you've bought or rented and the rest is obvious.

People probably get confused because it's not layed out like other services, but ime, it's as good or better than most. I've used Netflix, Foxtel, Amazon Prime, Disney, Stan, Acorn and the free ones. They all have their nuisances, but I'm pretty sure ATV is the best to use.

Watching the quarantine episode at the end of season 1 of Mythic Quest and it's a crack-up. Some of their best work, mostly done over zoom calls apparently.

I don't know if there is/was much talk about this show, but it seems far from it, which is criminal. It's brilliant tbh.

Some days I feel a bit Led Tasso around here :)

I watched the Billie Eilish Doco - was interesting but wayyyyy to long - had to spread it out over 3 days in smaller bites. But I do admire her brother Finneas - the real talent I think. I was shocked at their family house though - just sayin'..............(messy as).

Coming soon, Sept 1, Under The Volcano

https://www.underthevolcanomovie.com/

https://itunes.apple.com/au/movie/under-the-volcano/id1569881161

< On a remote Caribbean island in the 1980s, in the shadow of a volcano, the world’s biggest recording artists were drawn to one special place, to escape and to forge the music that defined an era. Built by Beatles’ producer Sir George Martin, AIR Studios Montserrat was the birthplace of mega-hits such as Money for Nothing and Every Breath You Take. For a decade, the studio formed the backdrop to monumental events in music history including the break-up of The Police, the reunion of The Rolling Stones, and the reinvigoration of Paul McCartney after the tragic murder of John Lennon. After a decade of hits, and at the peak of its popularity, the studio was destroyed when the island was hit by a series of devastating natural disasters. Through personal accounts and backed by a blistering soundtrack, Under the Volcano is the definitive account of George Martin’s Studio, a place that generated a perfect storm of talent, technology and isolation, ushering in music that would live on long after the last tape rolled. >

Since re-subscribing, I've watched a few episodes of Ted Lasso. Heard it won some awards and I like Sudeikis, so gave it a look. After 6 or 7 episodes, I'm not keen to continue. It's too corny and I don't care for the English football setting. Don't like most of the characters either.

Another series I hesitated watching is Morning Wars. I thought a show about a morning tv program wouldn't be interesting, but it's much more than that and is very compelling. I'm only 1 episode in though. Great actors and an interesting dynamic.

Velvet Underground - amazing!

Agree it was a documentary that was stylistically very well matched to the subject matter it covered.

One revelation for me was the amount of great songs they wrote and performed in the post John  Cale era, and how much of a contribution Doug Yule made.

You are the first person I've come across that hasn't enjoyed it.

I LOVED season 1 and really enjoyed Season 2 (I thought it's first few Episodes weren't  fantastic, but it improved as S2 went along).

Each to their own though, if everyone had the same taste we'd be pretty bored.
