Nice one. It has come a long way indeed, and back then, I still had a well-paying job. Planet Audio was an after-hours gig until it couldn't be any more.

A lengthy legal battle over the use of that name followed, and while we won, I decided to change the name to StereoNET anyway. A decision I am glad I made now.

Credit goes to the entire community though for what is has all become. I couldn't actually tell anyone what the secret to success is, other than I suspect, simple perseverance. I think our shows were a massive push for the StereoNET brand however and since that first show in 2016, the brand is very well recognised now.

Thanks for sharing Joe :)

Wow - a lifetime ago . I remember being lured over from AVL magazine forum.

Certainly changed since those old days

Any idea how many current members are from the Planetaudio days @Marc?

No idea. There's a fair churn in any hobbyist/special interest site though.

I know I no longer visit sites I joined during various interests or hobbies I'm no longer into.

Marc,

When did it change over? I think I've been here since Nov 2007, but I've only ever known it as StereoNET.

A bit after Audiokarma ('05) and diyaudio ('01), which I found all by myself. I think someone from the Melbourne Audio Club mentioned the site...so I dragged myself along!

From (ageing) memory, I think it was around 2003.

Separate the 13789 xxxx mail from the genuine...you can find some good stuff yeah.

Guitar dude wrote a song about it.

Alright, it's 1999
You say it, 1999
1999
1999 don't stop, don't stop, say it 1 more time
Two thousand zero zero party over, oops out of time
Yeah, yeah (Tonight I'm gonna)
So tonight we gonna (party like it's 1999)
we gonna, oww
Yeah,

Wasn’t Marc into the doof doof 😂

I was. But before that, I had an (incredibly brief) stint as a (wannabe) rock star and even got played on radio once (RRR mind you). But once I went into the studio I fell in love with the other side of the desk. I worked in the studio for a few years after that aiming to make a career out of it. Torn between two engineering streams I chose Mechanical over Audio.

As it turns out I ended up making a career for myself out of the audio industry anyway!

That said, you'd probably be surprised how many enthusiasts and industry members started in the "doof doof" industry :)

The truth is, we were building crossovers, building active systems, playing with "room acoustics" , and using external DACs, DSP, RTAs and measurements long before the domestic audio industry caught on. Car Audio was actually a very fine grounding and highly rewarding introduction to hi-fi and audio in general.
