Fangs, apparently the Nikon D7000 is the go, (around $1k6, currently my object of lust.... what can I sell to afford one.....

Having sold off most of my equipment last year to fund an overseas trip I had decided to settle with some pretty modest gear and focus on other things. But then I got the itch; maybe from looking too

Well a change in circumstance has seen some unpredicted down scaling and a room change over the past months. Most of my more exotic gear had to be sold to fund necessities but the music never stopped

The D7000 sounds nice but Mrs Fangs is a Canon girl. I won't complain as long as we end up with a L series lens.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hmmmm, Nikon vs Canon, one religion or the other. L series, serious moolah

Canon 7D or 5D?

second hand L mmm nice

'Fangs, technology marches on, apparently the new Canon 5D mkIII has in house software that corrects the aberations cheaper Canon lenses have!

Hmmmmmm. Changing my password isn't the only action I've been having. Systeming undergoing a makeover starting this week. Already got rid of most of the old and playing with a glimpse of the future. Updates coming....

Well here is part 1 of a 2 part revamp.

After playing with a HT sub borrowed from work I had decided that this was what was missing from my system. The HT sub was a bit much and a little 1 note but it really anchored everything else in the system. I decided to either buy a Hoyt-Bedford Type 3 (sub) or make a pair of seal down firing subs. Did some manic phone calls RE the Type 3 and to my good fortune found a pair of Omega Cube Subs (Omega are the higher end branded HB's) being cleared - only they were in Cherry...but I'm not picky. My weekend was complicated so didn't get the subs set up properly until last night. OMG what a difference! Tight, tuneful and fast bass just what Dr Fangs ordered. I'm pretty stoked.

Now Part 2 was ordered well before Part 1 was even a twinkle in my eye and should arrive in a couple weeks or less (please). A clue...there shouldn't be a pile of CD's on the top shelf...

Oooooo... They look like nice little subs. It sounds like you've done well in adding some quality bass. Congratulations.

The subs look nice, how did you connect them.

ATM speaker level - AMP>SUB>Speaker as I don't have a line out and only single terminals on my amp. I intend to try running seperate runs from the amp to my mains using the same terminal as the sub but I need to get some spades to terminate the amp end of my cables (10AWG too chunky for now).

I'm happy with the integration for now but I don't have a decent source to really know what's happening. The HB's are very directional on their own and I found too much so during extented soloing as the bass and drums seemed recessed. With the subs the image is more centred with the drum/bass providing a solid background to enjoy the directionality of solos - particularly on Jazz recordings that had seemed to ping pong a bit from left to right in the past. Feeling the full whump of a symphony has also been a spectacular experience!

These particular subs don't seem to bloat. If the gain is too high they sound distorted but still quite tight and you can hear changes in pitch. The other sub I had when the gain was too high there was little distortion just a big ol' deep, bloated tone. I have heard larger cabinet full range speakers and really enjoy ther more natural resonant sound but have to admit these subs really shape out the sound - it's very sculptural.Another thing I've obsevred is that I need to turn the gain down when I really crank it as the bass starts to overpower my mains. At about 80 db these subs really come to life.

Matt,

Getting the subs seems to be really paying off. With some music, the bass energy and loading of the room makes the music far more convincing, Mahler, Brahms, etc.

You could also consider incorporating MiniDSP in the future to deal with the room mode.

My SOTA Jewel finally turned up during the week. Bit of an epic journey getting it here and a huge THANKS to Cameron at Krispy Kables for all his effort. I mounted the Jelco 750 arm and Denon 103r (Silver Midas body) myself which was a bit stressful as I had never done this before and didn't really understand the instructions. To my surprise and relief it all worked. The sound is magic; rich, full bodied and detailed.

Definitely worth the wait.
