Go easy on buying new vinyl pressings - try and find second-hand records in good condition... The vast majority of 'thin' original / 2nd / third pressings are superior to modern ones. brevjog Posted July 8, 2019 Share Posted July 8, 2019 Hi Jarrett Just backing up was_a comments about how bad most audiophile pressings are, try and buy records from the same country as the band comes from i.e miles davis on american columbia and as close as you can get to the original pressing as possible or buy Japanese pressings as these are very good also. Become familiar with the recording engineers names and the dead wax info, Roy Dunann's work from 1956 for the Contemporary is quite outstanding and sounds astonishing through good equipment..... enjoy the journey 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I don't necessarily agree completely with that statement (with due respect). However, if purchasing from JB HiFi or similar and there are big stickers saying 180g Audiophile, then its probably sage advice as to being overpriced. If there are albums you are keen on, do a search in currently spinning to see what the pressing is like - as most likely someone has commented on it. Discogs is a useful app - to see what particular releases are (positive and negative). You will be able to find most of the releases was_a mentioned. If Audiophile is your target, and I'm not saying it is as it wasn't clear in your message, certain labels are a safer bet than others. (premium labels are Music Matters, Classic Records, Analogue Productions, MOFI, ORG, Speakers Corner, and so on - but they come at a premium as well). I do agree the Japanese releases are very good most of the time as well. However they are not cheap anymore. I would more suggest trying to understand if pressings come in paper inners, or are noisy - as this will be a bigger impost to your listening pleasure. (e.g Blue Note 75th anniversary releases are mostly paper inners and they trash the surface). Most importantly, enjoy the journey. Don't be too concerned or confused about buying the wrong label, release etc.. you will quickly come up to speed. 3 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I enjoy all formats of audio and have ripped over 1000 CD's to a media server, listen to streaming services on a Sonos system and even dug out my old MD walkman too see what recordings I had hidden :) Earlier this year I acquired a new sonos amp which runs the family home audio setup, which drove me to look into turntables to hook into that. But since then have moved the turntable into the study, looking into a separate zone. Eventually I may have the TT connected to sonos, but also would like a good headphone setup aswell, but that's another topic altogether... I've had some good success with second hand records at op-stores; you can get them quite cheap - though the quality can be all over the place. Worth checking out if that floats your boat. Enjoy..... hammer193 Posted December 1, 2019 Share Posted December 1, 2019 Hey, RE audiophile 180g pressings vs OG pressings. I have had very mixed experiences. I have multiple copies of a number of albums that i just have to buy when ever i see them ( used copies ) and i have audiophile 180g remastered copies also of some of these albums ( disintegration, face value, chariots of fire soundtrack, man from snowy river soundtrack, substance (new order) the message ( grand master flash) so these are my ‘reference’ albums as i know them so well. The best pressings are all over the place, not just with these ones but through out my and my wifes collections.
