anewmission Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 Ive decided to bring one of my yamaha p2200 power/pro amp home from the studio to set up a nice hifi system.I used it around the holidays, having my dac plugged straight in. Sounded very nice, though i would also like to be able to implement my tt, r2r and cd player. What would be a good pairing?A) something like an emotiva xsp1 gen 2B)a passive pre amp and then a powered tt pre ampC) something from the same era as the p2200? Current components are topping d50 dac, silent pc running dual boot of windows and linux(linux sounds better to me but no tidal:(), project carbon tt, oppo bdp... Not the best components but good for a home set up as i spend most of my listening time in the studio
anewmission Posted May 5, 2019 Author Posted May 5, 2019 I was also just admiring the schiit freya as it can do passive, active and valve modes. For about $1000. I just wished it was in black finish.I like that the emotiva has ht bypass. I can see this being very handy for the future when i dont have as much space
georgehifi Posted May 5, 2019 Posted May 5, 2019 (edited) A great cheap amp if you can find them unabused, as they were more for PA use. In standard form the P2200 is very low in Class-A bias it can be a little etched sounding, bass is great. So use a pre that's on the soft side of neutral eg: tube. But if you up the Class-A bias in this P2200, it can sound rather sweet as well, bias it up harder into Class-A till the heatsinks after 1hr of idle are 50-55c (no music input shorted with 8ohm load) then even solid state pre's are good. BTW: It has 2 x Alps "Black Beauties" potentiometers as input level controls best mechanical pots you can get, I just used these without any preamps at all, as it was so much more transparent this way. Chers George Yeh i agree with the pots. And also abouy plugging straight in. Maybe i just need a rca switcher, that way i can use multiple sources?
georgehifi Posted May 6, 2019 Posted May 6, 2019 (edited) And this is the best for the money. http://www.goldpt.com/sw4.html Cheers George Edited May 6, 2019 by georgehifi
MrBurns84 Posted May 6, 2019 Posted May 6, 2019 @anewmission i'd second george's post with a passive preamp. Most pro amps have a ton of power and a passive will be fine so as long as your source(s) have enough output gain ie - 2v output. 95% of source gear now do this anyways
anewmission Posted May 6, 2019 Author Posted May 6, 2019 It seems like a fairly easy thing to make. I wonder if i can find a pre drilled chassis to save a few dollars..Wondering if a pair of ns2000 or diatones would be a good pairing with this amp
georgehifi Posted May 6, 2019 Posted May 6, 2019 (edited) I picked up two of them a few years ago for $400 each. They always come up in those used PA/band supply shops, pretty beat up some of them, but they handle the bruises and knocks. Here is the the inside shot, massive potted toroidal on it's side, big supply caps, lots of bi-polars, can give some decent current. And also the service manual for those who want it. Any in sydney by any chance?

What kind of wattage would i need for two of these power amps at 100v?Someone told me transformers can add noise? That was a long time back

I’ve had no induced noise issues with my Wall-Cann, nor my previous Tortech. Both perform great!

Al.M Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 I have two of the P2201 amp models without VU meters, agree with all of the above comments, cheapest way for get plenty good watts for not much used money. Typical used prices can range from $200-800. There is/was one on Gumtree for $500. Good preamp matches fromnot much money are Audiolab 8000C or Q, various tube preamps including eBay Chinese ones, Luxman. Passive preamps will often make them sound dull as the basic power map sound is solid but reserved so best to liven them up. They are also very handy for electronic crossovers and cheap quality biamping etc as the volume controls give enough levels.

Can use RCA Y splitters if one only has single outs on a preamp. These amps are circa 1978 -1980s so the main power caps will be very old and would be good to replace them to freshen up the sound at around $300 with service technician and parts. anewmission Posted May 7, 2019 Author Posted May 7, 2019 There is also a pc2002m on gumtree at the moment. Asking price is abit high i think.. The p2201's on ebay from england are about the same price. So i guess they are the kind of thing if you see at a bargain price then get them
